OLIVIA
I went down and shut my eyes to pray silently. I can’t recall the last time I did that. My brain isn’t functioning properly. It was the only thing I could think of.
Cyril slowly drove past me and stopped. I’m pretty certain he was contemplating if I was the one inside the car.
The windshield was tinted, so he couldn’t see me. I patiently waited for him to leave and he did.
“Gosh!
That was close!” I did a cross sign. I was struggling to breathe.
This was the reason I asked Kate to go home because I knew Cyril might show up. I had no idea that it would happen so fast.
Without hesitation, I drove towards the main estate gate where I met the chief security.
I had the urge to stop and confront him for telling Cyril that Adrian had stopped by the house. On second thought, I figured that he might want to call Cyril immediately and blow out my cover. It’s quite obvious that he’s on Cyril’s payroll just to keep an eye on me.
It wasn’t difficult locating Adrian’s estate. I was already familiar with the estate. I had no idea that Adrian was one of the residents.
Approaching the estate gate entrance, I was intercepted by the security on duty.
“Who are you?” He questioned me with a harsh tone and flickered his flashlight across my car to be certain I wasn’t in possession of dangerous weapons.
“Adrian. He asked me to come,” I explained, forcing a smile. I was hoping that the security would be a bit friendly this time.
“Adrian who?
Sorry, I don’t know who that is. Call him on the phone. There’s a need for me to confirm,” he said to me in a placating tone.
I was a bit embarrassed at his attitude towards me. I tried all I could to conceal my anger. I won’t be staying here for too long. It’s just a matter before Adrian confirms my identity.
Reluctantly, I reached out to Adrian over the phone. Sadly for me, he wasn’t taking his calls.
I felt a meltdown inside of me. This security would give me the worst embarrassment of my life. I wasn’t ready for any of his dramas.
A thousand times I called, and not for once, did Adrian respond. This got me wondering if Adrian was playing a prank on me when he invited me over for dinner.
“What’s happening?
I thought you wanted to speak to him over the phone?” The security yelled at me.
“Yes, I mean no,” I stuttered. I lack words to explain myself. It didn’t seem like the security was ready to listen to my excuses anymore.
Just when I thought the security at my estate was horrible. I had no idea that I was heading for the worst. From what I’ve witnessed so far, I might be forced to apologize to our security.
“He isn’t picking.
Can you please give me more time? He might call back,” I pleaded with the security in a faint tone. I can’t imagine myself returning home to Cyril dressed like this.
I would rather spend the night with Adrian and worry about Cyril’s troubles afterward.
“I am sorry, but you may need to leave before I call the cops. We don’t allow strangers in our estate,” he told me.
All efforts to plead for more time proved abortive. He was becoming violent. I was scared that he might hit me.
At that point, I wasn’t worried if Cyril was home anymore. I’m already used to his yelling. Tonight won’t be anything different from our previous Chaotic nights.
“Fine! I’ll leave.” I finally agreed. It wasn’t easy for me to decide. I considered my mental health and decided that it was time to leave. This is probably my worst date ever. Maybe I shouldn’t have expected too much.
On the verge of driving out, the security called me back. I was a bit hesitant to pay attention to him after the humiliation he caused me.
“I’m sorry,” he apologized and looked sideways. I was stunned. I couldn’t understand what was happening.
“You are sorry?
For what?” I asked him. His voice had suddenly become calm too. He wasn’t aggressive anymore compared to when I first drove in.
“Mr. Adrian just called to confirm your identity. You’re free to leave now. I apologize for any inconvenience caused,” he apologized and smiled at me. That was the only time I saw him display his set of teeth. I was starting to wonder if he had none.
“Adrian called you?’ I echoed. I was yet to understand why he didn’t call me instead.
“Never mind!
I would just leave,” I hissed and drove straight to Adrian’s mansion. It wasn’t the best night that I had wished for myself.
Nonetheless, I was elated that I was able to get past Cyril and the security. They were my only stumbling blocks.
I was motivated to call Adrian this time after he reached out to security.
Fortunately for me, Adrian called first.
“I’m so sorry for your outburst with the security. Some harmed men invaded the estate a few weeks ago. He was just doing his job,” Adrian apologized to me. He knew the right words to calm my nerves. The feeling of spending the night with Adrian had eluded me. I don’t feel excited about it anymore.
I stayed quiet.
I was too angry to speak. I am afraid of hurling abusive words at Adrian that would ruin everything.
“I’m outside your penthouse.
Can you please come get me?”
I spoke softly.
“Okay. In a bit,”
Adrian replied. From his tone, I could tell how nervous he was.
I leaned against the backseat waiting for Adrian to come pick me when my phone beeped. It was a text from Cyril.
“The security told me that you just stepped out. If you don’t want a divorce, come back home this minute. If you pass the night outside, consider this marriage over,” I read the text as tears gushed down my eyes. I can’t even have a moment of relief anymore because I married a narcissist.
