Nicholas POV
“Hello, Mr Nicholas. It’s an honor to hear from you. I’m Rudolf Watson and my secretary received your email a few minutes ago which she forwarded to me”
“Hello Mr Rudolf. I’m glad to hear from you. I received your email a minute ago and called instantly but someone picked up but didn’t say anything”
“I’m sorry about that Mr Sterling. It was one of the nurses and she isn’t very good at speaking your language” he explained and I finally understood.
The nurse might have probably not been able to understand my language but I was confused about why the doctor could speak English so fluently.
“How come you know English so well” I asked.
“I did my masters in New York,” he said and I finally understood why his English was so clear.
“So I was through your email and I couldn’t understand somethings. You said you needed some_”
“Yes Mr. Sterling,” he said, cutting my words short “We haven’t tried this particular tumor operation before but from our numerous tests and research, we found out that there’s a possibility for the brain tumor to be removed but we had stopped conducting tests a year ago because we lacked some important equipment needed to further our testings”
“Okay then if I invest in your hospital, would you be able to continue your test and research?” I asked urgently
“Mr Sterling that would be excellent. Your investment will go a long way and we can start the research and testing again” the doctor said, his voice sharp and laced with excitement
“Okay doctor Rudolf, my lawyer will call you soon and speak with you about everything that needs to be done”
“Thank you, Mr Sterling. We hope to not disappoint you” the doctor said excitedly.
“Thank you for giving me a strand of hope to hold onto for my wife,” I said, a little hope rising in my heart as I saw this as a possibility to keep Monica alive.
“I look forward to your investment soon Mr Sterling,” he said.
“How long will the research take before my wife can undergo surgery?” I asked, my heart racing in fear as I awaited his reply and hoped that he didn’t say months.
“We were almost done with the research last year but if we resume immediately, we ought to have be done with everything in two days Mr Sterling, depending on how soon you invest and how soon we start” he explained and I almost jumped for joy at this rate.
“Thank you, doctor Rudolf. I’ll get back to you as soon as I can” I said excitedly.
“Alright, Mr Sterling. Have a nice day ahead and thank you for your investment in our work” he uttered then hung up.
I stood still, staring at the phone in my hands as a smile appeared across my face. This was great news. This was good news.
After one week of emails and rejections non-stop, I finally had a way to save Monica and snatch her back from death.
“Nicholas I need your signature on this document urgently” Anthony walked into my office and I rushed to him and grabbed him in a tight hug.
The file fell off his hand as he stood still in my embrace “What’s going on?” He asked.
“I did it,” I said, breaking the hug and staring at Anthony with a broad smile on my face.
“Did what? A few minutes ago, you seemed like you were about to rip my head off but now you seem very happy. Spill it out” he said, bending to pick up the files
“I’ve finally found a way for Monica to live,” I said.
Anthony stared at me, disbelief evident in his eyes.
“Are you joking with me?” He asked, his eyes narrowing as he stared intently at me.
“No, I’m not Anthony. Remember those emails I sent. I just got off a call from a popular surgeon from Germany who said they had research and some tests that could help in Monica’s brain tumor”
Anthony gasped, using his hands to cover his mouth in shock as the files fell from his hands again “Tell me you aren’t kidding?”
“I am not. I could finally save my wife, Anthony. My labor didn’t go in vain. I’m so happy” I said, my voice sharp as my heart pounded against my chest in excitement.
“This is good news,” Anthony said, grabbing me to himself and hugging me tightly. “Congratulations man”
“Thank you,” I said.
“So what’s the next step?” He asked, curious about everything.
“Firstly, I need you to prepare a contract. I want to invest in their work so they can speed up the_”
“Wait what?” Anthony said, cutting my words short.
“I need a contract to_” I tried saying, but he interrupted me again.
“No not that, the other thing you said,” he said.
“I want to invest,” I said.
“Do you know this person very well?” Anthony asked.
“No I don’t” I replied.
“Have you seen their hospital or laboratory before?”
“No, I haven’t” I replied again.
“Have you worked closely with them before?” he asked again.
“No, I haven’t” I replied, wearing a frown on my face as I found his question foolish.
“And you want to invest? Are you crazy?” Anthony yelled, snapping me out of my happiness and putting a thought on my head.
I haven’t seen these people before and have only spoken to them on the phone, but that didn’t guarantee their originality.
“What if they are fraudsters just wanting your money” he asked, and I found sense in his words.
Once again, the happiness I felt slowly evaporated as I began to realize that Anthony’s words could be a possibility.
This doctor was in another country and I knew nothing about him except from what the Internet said about him, but that wasn’t enough assurance to invest in a company.
“Then what do we do? I’m running out of time and so is Monica” I uttered, my lips in a straight line, as I didn’t have any reason to smile again.
“Let me do some research, my dear friend. I’m your lawyer and your friend and, as a good friend, I will tell you that investing in something you’re not sure of is a bad business strategy” he said, and I just turned around and went back to my seat, feeling conquered, rejected, and like a failure.
If eventually, this hospital or person was a fraud, then I had to find another hospital and continue sending more email
