Before falling asleep, she still felt unreal. “Reuben, am I dreaming?”
Reuben patted her head. “Sleep well, I’ll be here tomorrow.”
Perhaps because she was sleeping next to her father, Callie had a rare, peaceful night’s sleep.
The next day, when she woke up, she saw Reuben leaning against the hospital bed, already awake. She smiled and said, “Good morning, Reuben.”
Reuben also smiled. Such ordinary days were very rare for the father and daughter.
Tobias came in with a nurse for rounds. After checking all the indicators, he was very satisfied and said to Callie, “It’s a miracle that your uncle woke up. As long as he does his rehabilitation well and takes care of his health, everything will be fine.”
Callie was very happy and sincerely thanked him. “Tobias, thank you for these four years.”
Since their last conversation, Tobias had been restraining his affection. He forced a smile. “It’s my duty. I just hope you won’t feel burdened in the future.”
Callie pulled him aside and whispered, “After sleeping for four years, are there any aftereffects?”
Tobias thought for a moment and told the truth. “His memory might be a bit poor.”
“Is it serious? He seems fine now.”
“It’s not too serious. He might not remember distant memories clearly. Just make sure he gets enough brain supplements,” Tobias explained.
Callie nodded uncertainly. “I’ll take care of it.”
Reuben’s awakening attracted many of his old friends, who came with gifts to visit. Callie was squeezed into a corner, watching helplessly.
After much thought, she decided to call that man. The call went through, but no one answered.
She called again, and it was quickly answered. “Nel…”
“This is Marilyn,” came the straightforward reply. “Nelson is attending a meeting, and I’m with him. His phone is with me. What do you need?”
Her tone made it sound like she was Mrs. Oconnor.
It was a straightforward explanation, but thinking about it revealed an underlying ambiguity. Someone who could keep Nelson’s personal phone must be in some kind of relationship with Nelson.
Callie was taken aback. “I see. Please tell him I called and that it’s urgent.”
Just as she was about to hang up, Marilyn stopped her. “What’s the matter?”
“Family business.”
“Oh, as long as you remember what I said.” Marilyn finished and hung up.
Callie leaned against the wall, looking at Reuben surrounded by people, feeling a mix of emotions.
She spent the whole day at the hospital. During this time, Shamar called to thank her for securing Ahmad’s investment. “As long as he’s willing to invest, funding won’t be a big issue once the project starts.”
Callie felt much relieved. “That’s good. By the way, Shamar, can you do me a favor?”
“Of course, what do you need?”
“Help me find a house.”
“A house? Aren’t you…”
“Yes, a place for long-term stay, preferably suitable for an elderly person to recuperate, not too far from the city center,” Callie said. “Help me find one, and I’ll transfer the money to you once you find a suitable place.”
Over the years, she had saved some money and could afford to rent a house.
Given Reuben’s condition, he wouldn’t stay in the hospital for long and needed a suitable place to stay. Returning to the Marsh family was out of the question.
“Don’t worry about it. I’ll arrange it within two days.”
With that assurance, she was satisfied.
Yamilet heard about Reuben waking up and insisted on coming to the hospital. The bodyguard asked Callie for instructions. “Let her make a fuss, but don’t let her in.”
