Reuben shook his head vigorously, holding her hand tightly. “Remember? How could I forget, my Callie.”
Callie threw herself into his arms, letting out all the grievances of the past four years. “You’re so bad, making me endure these four years alone. Do you know how I managed?”
With a father, she could act spoiled and complain without restraint, as if she had found a pillar of support.
Callie had never felt so happy.
Reuben embraced her, nodding continuously, repeating, “I know, I wronged you, Callie. It’s my fault…”
Seeing this, Tobias left the ward, closing the door behind him to give the father and daughter some private time.
Callie cried for a long time. When she finally stopped, she stood up. “Just focus on getting better and don’t worry about anything else, okay? Stay by my side from now on.”
Reuben nodded. He reached out to wipe the tears from Callie’s face and said earnestly, “During the four years I was in a coma, did she and Joaquin give you any trouble?”
It was clear who he meant by “she.” Callie was silent for a moment, then shook her head. “Don’t worry. I have the ability to handle things on my own now and have cut ties with them.”
Reuben was a smart man and quickly understood the implications. He didn’t criticize but expressed concern instead. “I heard from Tobias that you have been working and are now the director of the design department. Callie, I’m happy that you’ve succeeded in a field you love, but living alone is too tiring…”
Callie understood what he meant. She pursed her lips, thinking he would find out sooner or later, so she decided to be straightforward. “Reuben, I’m already married.”
Reuben froze, looking at her in disbelief. His eyes darkened, and he almost couldn’t catch his breath.
Callie quickly supported him and added, “He… he treats me very well. Without him, I wouldn’t know how to take care of you.”
Hearing this, Reuben calmed down a bit. “Time flies. My Callie is already married.”
Callie hid her bitterness and helplessness.
“No wonder I seemed to hear a strange man’s voice talking to me while I was in a coma.”
She responded with a bitter smile. “Yes, so don’t worry. I’m doing quite well.”
Reuben was still skeptical. “Why did you come alone in the middle of the night? Where is he?”
“He… he’s on a business trip. He won’t be in Ylosea for a few days. When he returns, I’ll bring him to see you.” At this point, she had no choice but to lie.
Reuben was half-convinced. He pulled Callie to sit down. “What kind of person is he?”
The first question stumped Callie. Nelson’s character was questionable; he even set traps worth billions for her to fall into.
“He’s a good person and treats me well,” Callie answered reluctantly.
“Tell me more.”
Callie racked her brain and picked some daily trivialities to talk about, which wasn’t entirely untrue.
“Sounds like he comes from a good family,” Reuben pondered. “Did you have any ceremony when you got married?”
Callie rolled her eyes. “No, we said we’d wait until you woke up to do it. His grandfather has always wanted to discuss it with you properly.”
This wasn’t entirely a lie either.
Reuben reluctantly accepted it and wanted to ask more but was stopped by Callie. “You just woke up; rest well first. There’s plenty of time to get to know each other later, okay?”
Helplessly, Reuben had no choice but to lie down again, looking at her with eyes full of affection.
