Chapter 32
TRISTAN’S POV
If truly having a mate is a blessing like they said, mine was a curse. A curse that I wished I never met, a curse I would have done anything to avoid. Sometimes, getting to experience things makes one wise and smart but it might be the opposite to another. My past? I can vividly say it’s affecting me this moment, having to trust became so hard when it comes to mates. All these years, alone, I have watched and attended other Alphas’ mating ceremonies and I feel nothing, all I do is smile because I feel they are all the same (the women).
Healing? I didn’t think it was possible. But that was my mindset months and years ago. Now? It’s different. I find myself contemplating a second chance. How did this happen? When did I start thinking about healing?
I don’t know how or when.
I noticed someone reaching out to me, but I chose to ignore it. It’s hard, and I’m afraid that history might repeat itself if I give it a chance. Davina’s demeanor changed just a few hours ago; it seemed like she had a serious conversation with herself, and it’s clear that she did. Desperately, I tried to hold her hand above her head to see if she would surrender, but she did the opposite.
I was speechless when she pushed me and walked out on me. That was when I knew I had to bring her back to her true self, for Tammy’s sake, not mine. Quietly, I followed her because she was not fully healed. I watched her trying to act cold and nonchalant, and it made me chuckle at the thought of it.
I made it back to my chambers with her in my arms and got lost in her eyes. I must say, they were pretty, down to her lips. It made me crave her, and at that moment, I made up my mind that I would reciprocate if she kissed me. I saw her fight the urge to kiss me, so I brought my face forward, anticipating her kiss, but she ruined it. She pushed me back, and I felt rejected, more of a silent rejection.
I needed a push and I questioned why I was so excited about having her lips. It felt weird and it worried me for a while. She started a necessary conversation, and while a part of me was with her, another part of me was staring at her lips.
“She’s having a serious conversation with you, Tristan!” Grey growled in my head, which helped me refocus. Davina fought two rogues without proper training. It was both amusing and made me wonder if she was truly just a wolf.
“Exactly!” I exclaimed. “Rogues rarely give up on their target. It’s either the target dies or they die.” I explained, giving her a clear view of the situation.
She shrugged and asked, “So?”
“So, Davina, who are you?” I asked, fixing my gaze on her.
She laughed and said, “Are you serious? Who am I? Funny.”
She cleared her throat, “I’m Davina Clifford, and I grew up in the slum. Not really a slum but I have never been happy there. Tough childhood with a callous, wicked, and controlling stepmother. Almost forgot, almost got raped by her son. Thanks to Lexie, she came through that moment and you bought me the next day – “I didn’t. My beta did” I corrected and she scoffed.
“Reasons why you can’t take me seriously or think I’m important just because I was treated like a commodity. What am I even saying, what difference will it make if we just” meet coincidentally and we find out we are mates- still rejecting you.” I cut in. She gave me a dangerous glare and backed it with an eye roll.
“So what’s your plan, Alpha Tristan?” She asked.
“Interested in my plans?” I asked, and she nodded with a straight face.
“Those orders aren’t for you. I’ll talk to the pack officials and men about it. You have the whole week to rest and get energized. I’ll handle the rogue outbreak and protect the pack no matter what,” I explained. She didn’t say anything. Her facial expression changed, and she quietly lay back on the bed.
I grabbed my coat and got ready to start the day.
Her voice came from behind me as she said, “I should go back to my room.” I returned my gaze to her and watched as she got up.
“Why?”
“Because it’s my room. Furthermore, it seems like I’m not welcome here. I just want to be with my friends,” she stated firmly, waiting with her hands clasped.
“I won’t be back until nightfall. You should rest here. I will send for the servants.”-
“And Grady.” She added.
“I don’t hire those I fired Davina-
Why? Is it because he has no power? Is it because he’s just a servant?-
“Davina!” I yelled, gritting my teeth.
“He was not at fault; I was! He was trying to assist me while I lost control of the situation.”
I will decide who is at fault,”
She cut in, “Hahaha, abuse of power, and authority?? I sense that!” She chuckled.
That statement angered me, igniting a fire within. How does she consistently provoke such a reaction in me?
“Watch your tongue woman!”
“What if I decide not to?” she stood her ground, fearless, and stared at me without flinching. I took a deep breath, trying to control my anger.
“I was the one at fault, so you are bringing him back and that’s final.” She concluded and lay back on the bed.
You are not in a position to make that conclusion. I hired him, and I have the right to dismiss him if I see he’s not taking his work seriously.
“You hired him, and he’s working for me! And you fired him without my approval, I will hire him back without your approval.”
“Oh, that’s nice! I’d love to see you try,” I chuckled and walked out of the room, filled with fury.
