Cora looked down at the disheveled Callie.
“You’re a smart woman. You know you and Nelson will divorce sooner or later, so you went after Jaquan. Quite a move. I didn’t expect you to actually establish a long-term relationship with him.”
She taunted, “So, have you slept with him?”
“I’ve never crossed the line with Jaquan,” Callie said, suddenly understanding many things. “You knew about my interactions with Jaquan. You sent those photos to Nelson in Jaquan’s name.”
Cora sneered, indifferent. At this point, she seemed to care about nothing.
“Fool, you let yourself be played.”
Cora’s body trembled slightly, her gaze distant as if recalling something from long ago. “The first time I met Mr. Oconnor was at an airport abroad. My luggage was lost during transit. I was so anxious that I cried. It was Mr. Oconnor who appeared and helped me.”
“I mean it. I didn’t know who he was at the time, but I was sure he moved my heart. Seeing him made me believe in love at first sight.”
“After just a few days together, he pulled me out of a bottomless pit, gave me opportunities, taught me how to be an elegant woman, and live a quality life.”
“I knew someone like him was beyond my grasp, but I couldn’t help but try. Within days, he made me his special assistant. These past few years have felt like stolen moments. Every day by his side has been immensely fulfilling.”
“But… he’s too ruthless… Once he sensed my feelings for him, he sidelined me.” Cora, unrepentant, slowly squatted down, her voice weakening and trembling with emotion. “He’s too ruthless…”
Callie examined her closely, now certain she saw pure admiration in this woman.
Callie felt a bit cruel. “You always knew he would never love you…”
Tears streamed uncontrollably down Cora’s face, ruining her makeup.
“Yes, he doesn’t love me. Why? I’m so excellent, Callie. It’s because of you, all because of you!”
Facing her screams, Callie remained calm and spoke slowly, “He’s someone you can’t hold onto.”
Cora stared at her.
Callie continued, “I can’t hold onto him either.”
“As his special assistant, you should know that in his world, many women can coexist simultaneously, right?”
Cora mulled over these words for a while before sneering again. “Are you lecturing me? You’re too arrogant. Don’t think that just because you’re Mrs. Oconnor, you’re secure for life. Nelson is the best at manipulating people. Even if you hold that position, you won’t gain any real benefit.”
Callie’s mouth bled, and she trembled all over. “At least I have this position to rely on. No matter what Nelson does, he will consider my status as Mrs. Oconnor. We didn’t sign a prenuptial agreement. If we divorce, I will still have some assets. What about you?”
According to Cora’s plan, Nelson would likely arrive soon. She could only try to stall for time.
Cora tightened her grip on the hemp rope until her fingertips turned white.
“Cora, think carefully. With your experience at Oconnor Group, you could get a good position elsewhere. Why waste your prime years on this doomed project? There’s still time to turn back.”
