As soon as the words were spoken, Cora suddenly screamed, “I have no way back, Callie! I’ve had no way back at all!”
With that, she grabbed Callie and threw her beside Marilyn. “I just want to see what choice Nelson will make.”
A bodyguard at the door turned his head, “Miss Weber, Nelson’s car has arrived.”
Cora lifted her head, “Did he bring anyone?”
He looked carefully into the distance before answering, “No, he’s alone.”
Callie forced her aching body to move and lifted her head with difficulty. The intense light outside made her squint and feel uncomfortable.
The iron gate was pushed open, and a man strode in, bathed in the lingering warmth of the sunlight. His tall and upright figure exuded an air of extreme gravity and calmness.
Every step he took seemed to press heavily on Callie’s heart, making it hard for her to breathe.
Cora watched this figure with a nearly manic expression, almost crying with joy, “Mr. Oconnor… you really came.”
Nelson stopped not far away, his gaze swept over Callie and paused for a second.
“Didn’t you ask me to come?” He reached out to unbutton his cuff, his eyes dark and poisonous.
“Then did you come for me?” Cora asked cautiously, knowing the answer but still holding onto a ridiculous hope.
Nelson didn’t respond. He casually took off his coat and threw it onto some wood nearby, then removed the ring from his ring finger and carefully put it away.
“Apparently not.” Cora’s smile slowly faded as she looked at the two women beside her. “Then Mr. Oconnor, which one of them did you come for?”
Callie shrank back; she was starting to feel a bit afraid of Nelson’s answer, though she knew she shouldn’t expect anything from him.
Nelson looked at her as if she were a stranger. “What do you want?”
“I want to know when you started suspecting it was me.”
“A long time ago, from the moment you deleted a call from my private phone.” He didn’t specify whose call it was, but both of them knew.
Cora shook her head in disbelief. “I’ve been with you for so many years, and just one small detail made you suspect me?”
“Not just that,” Nelson’s tone was calm. “Few people knew about the incident at the construction site, not even the company’s top management. Yet you pointed the finger directly at Callie when I didn’t trust her much. Isn’t that suspicious?”
He was a very suspicious man; anything that seemed flawless would make him see even bigger flaws.
“Cora, I didn’t want to doubt you.” Nelson stared at her. “You were a trusted confidant I personally trained.”
For him to say such words indicated her high status. Cora’s eyes filled with tears. “But just because I threatened Callie, you want to sideline me? Nelson, I was loyal to you!”
“Really?” Nelson’s voice was stern. “How do you explain the photos of Jaquan and Callie? Who is your backer? Do you dare to say?”
So he knew.
Cora avoided his gaze, feeling guilty. “I didn’t!”
“What do you want?” Nelson was too lazy to argue further.
Cora wiped away her tears and gave a look to the bodyguard. He immediately dragged Marilyn to the side of a suspended area, tying her hands to a steel bar with a rope. Her slender figure swayed precariously; any slight mistake could make her fall from the second floor, resulting in serious injury or worse.
