Ophelia was meeting with Cade that evening. He had asked that they talk after the way things went down with Harper that night. He was going to tell her about the result he had gotten and also ask her what had gone on with her and her dad. Ophelia had accepted the meet-up, even though he could still think that she was probably mad at him before he left the house.
“Hi, you made it,” Cade said, standing by the door of the restaurant. He had waited to be with her so they could walk in together.
“You asked me to, and I am not that mean of a jerk to hurt your feelings,” she said. He was not sure if she was being real with me or if she was taking a jab at him.
“Still, thank you for coming,” he said as they walked inside.
They sat down and ordered theirs. While they waited for their meal to arrive, Ophelia had to know the reason why he was asking them out of the house when he knew things were not all rosy and peachy with them.
“So what is this about?”
“Are you mad at me?” Cade was not sure if she was still angry because of what had happened at breakfast yesterday or if he was just overreacting with the death-threat glances and expressions at him the entire time they had been sitting there.
“Did you do something for me to be made at?” she asked, leaning into her chair.
“I do not know, but if you don’t tell me, then I will never know,” he said, hoping to get her to talk about it.
“I guess it is not as big as I am making it out to be,” Ophelia dismissed it. She wished he had known she was angry and he was not going to do anything about it. His saying that he wanted to know the reason did not sit well with her at all.
“It is; you have been mad at me since yesterday morning. I would like to think that everything that happened yesterday happened because you were mad at me.”
“Are you blaming everything on me?” Ophelia pretended to gasp as she held her hand to her chest dramatically.
“Of course not; I am taking the blame. If I had not pissed you off, you would have had a normal day and then a normal life, and you would not have gone out to meet Green, and Harper would not have found her way to the house. All of this started because I foolishly let it start like a domino ready to topple over.”
Ophelia wanted to ask him if he knew why she was mad, but she realized that she would have to actually tell him why she was angry as she walked away angrier at her. “I guess I overreacted. I am also sorry,” Ophelia said instead.
She was the wrong one for falling in love when they had specifically said that they were not going to do any of that. The feelings she had for him were not acknowledged by him, and she had no right to be angry at him. She should just let it all go and continue living a normal life.
“Oh, I guess we are even now?” Cade asked, stretching his hand out for her to shake.
“Before I shake your hand like we are business partners in the middle of a contract signing, I would like to remind you that we are a couple and we are in the middle of a restaurant. Shaking hands can be very controversial for us as a couple, and I hope you do something creative,” she whispered in and whispered before taking her hand.
He pulled her hand and bent his hand gently, leaving a wet kiss on the back of her hand, before rubbing her hand gently and putting it down with her hand still in his. “I guess this must be a romantic gesture,” he said with a smile.
At this point, Ophelia wished she had asked them to meet at home instead; that way, she could easily have not gotten into any of this kind of drama and her heart would not be beating like crazy in her chest. She wondered if he would be able to feel her pain as he held tightly to her hand.
“Ophelia,” he said in a low tone, and she raised her head, trying to maintain eye contact with him as her heart beat rapidly in her chest. “How did it go yesterday with your father? We never got to talk about that yesterday.”
“Well, he is still all over the fact that we need to have kids first.”
“Is he?” Cade was bummed that this seemed to be the only way for things to get resolved. “What is the plan then? What are we doing about it?”
“Nothing; he told me that until I gave him an heir, I would be saddled with the responsibility of the entertainment firm, and I am supposed to raise the profit all by myself,” Ophelia said, leaving out the fact that her going there was a substitute for having a child together.
“So we are still supposed to have a child together?” Cade asked, and she nodded, trying to avoid your contact. She felt bad for lying, but maybe if she kept going down this line, she could break her own rule because of the pressure from their family to make their own little family.
“Yes, but what about you?”
“Me?”
“Yes, enough about me. What did the doctor say about the maternity test?”
“I have the result right here,” he left her hand, and she almost cried out because of how empty and cold it suddenly felt. He took out an envelope from the inner pocket of his suit.
“I have not seen it yet. I was waiting so we could check it later. Do you want to do the honours?” he asked, pointing the envelope to her.
“Really? You want me to do this?”
“Yeah, I do, he said, and she took it, tearing off the seal and then opening it. She read through it, and her eyes went up to him. “Oh”
“Oh good or oh bad?” he asked, and she shrugged.
“Well, she is your mom. It is a ninety-nine percent match.”
