A Decoy

Adams’ POV
“What do you mean?” I was running through the fortress as hurriedly as I could, as I wasn’t sure what to call what was happening at the moment. “Are you really serious?”
“They were here… just a few minutes ago after we had driven them out. And now, they are nowhere to be found.” Ronan’s tone brimmed with shock and frustration.
I was done hearing about it and was soon setting out to go see it for myself. It was just as he had said. They were all gone.
“It had been a decoy…” I breathed out angrily as I was about to lose control of Ted. I was clinging to the last thread of self-restraint that I had.
It was quite annoying that everything was falling apart right when it seemed like it was all about to make sense.
“A decoy for what, Alpha?” Ronan questioned in fright, as he could surely sense my aura stirring up. He backed away by one step, when he saw Ted’s eyes flashing through mine.
I was sure he was still traumatized from his experience with Ted the last time. There were just no means of telling what I could do at that point, as thoughts were running through my head about the list of people who could have been the prime suspects of that crime.
“Lilith is missing. I can’t find her in the room where I had left her,” I said, as I was trying my best not to lose it while saying those words.
I felt like a total failure for not being able to keep her safe from whoever it had been that had taken her away. My wife had been taken right under my nose, because of my carelessness.
“I will make sure they are dealt with for toying with my mate!” I let out angrily.
“But… how?” Ronan was as shocked as I had been when I had seen the room empty without her in it. “She was in the room, right? And the guards are everywhere. How come this strange development?”
“Something’s not right,” I muttered. “Rally a search party. We must find the Luna at once!” my voice blared through the night.
It was meant to have been a really wonderful night, on the night of the full moon. But there I was, with my wife missing.
“Could it be Ben?” Ronan was surely never going to get over his enmity with my brother. He was sure that every single thing that had gone wrong had been my brother. “First, he tried to poison her using that maid, now he’s attempting an abduction… how much more direct could that be?”
At this point, I am not sure what to believe anymore. I am not sure my brother could be this proficient in extracting her that flawlessly.
“We can continue this conversation while we are on the search.” I said, as I motioned for Ronan to join me with the search at once.
We headed out through the back as I was looking out for every single clue that I could find on our way, but I kept on coming up empty. There were no signs of a struggle in the grass and the sand.
I was sure the assailant was quite good at covering their tracks, until I saw the horse’s tracks.
“Here…” I said, pointing to the tracks which seemed to lead into the woods where we’d had that encounter with the strange men. “Let’s follow these.”
Ronan gave the signal for the horses, and we were soon riding hot in the direction of the trail. We went for a couple of moments, without saying a single word. There had been no signs of life in the woods and that was quite discouraging.
“Are you sure of this?” Ronan was beginning to doubt that we were on our way to find something useful as there were no signs to encourage us just yet. “There’s really nothing here.”
I didn’t want to give up the search just yet as I felt that I would be able to catch up if we persisted long enough with the chase.
“Just a little bit further,” I urged, as I spurred the horse I was on to move at top speed. Soon enough, I could feel we were getting closer to something. “I can sense something.”
“Alright.” Ronan found the courage to follow as he seemed to have sensed the same thing I did.
Soon enough, we could sense footsteps ahead. As I listened carefully with Ted’s aid, I could hear some people running up ahead. As I listened closely, I was certain that it was the four of them.
“It has to be them.” I felt anger burning up inside me as I was hurrying to the men who had served as decoys for the real perpetrator. “It’s them!”
“Those bastards!” Ronan let out as he seemed like he could descend from his horse and pursue them in his wolf form. “I will make them all pay!”
The men seemed to be aware of us as they were soon running even faster than they had been at first. They sped on in their wolf forms as they didn’t stop for a single moment.
I wanted to grab them at once as soon as they came into view. But then, Ted also, wanted to tear them in pieces at once. But I refused to let him out..
As we were both about to close in on them, they suddenly sunk into the ground. The horses nearly threw me off as they came to a sudden stop in front of the pit that the men had fallen into.
“What in the blue moon?” Ronan let out, as he was able to control Neil his horse, who had nearly thrown him off. “This has to be some sort of trap to lure us in.”
I hated the creeps I was getting from that, but then I was sure that it was time to turn back home. It could be dangerous staying out there as there was no telling what more we could expect from then on. I wasn’t scared though, but I had the feeling that we should go home.
As I turned around to look at Ronan, I noticed that he was frozen still in fright as he was probably hearing the worst possible thing ever over the mind link.
“What? No way!” Ronan said, as he looked up at me with surprise.
“What’s going on?” I asked, as I was feeling a bit agitated.
“One of the guards…” he was breathing heavily as he was still troubled by what he had just heard, “he says Luna has returned to the palace!”
