Hearing this, Tom remained calm. He slightly parted his thin lips and said, “It was about a project. I met the partner just as I left the company, so we talked a bit more at an outside venue.”
Jane didn’t want to expose him further because she knew this was highly unlikely. As someone with experience, she focused on the cute bunny head on the cup of milk tea in his hand.
Tom followed his mother’s gaze to the cup and sensed the different meaning in her smile. He extended his hand towards her and said warmly, “I bought this for you. The hot pudding flavor is pretty good. Try it while it’s warm.”
His voice was magnetic, like aged wine, and he smiled slightly. But he hadn’t mentioned this when he first came in.
Jane looked up at her son with a smile and curiously asked, “Who is this girl?”
Tom remained composed, his features deep and refined. He softly asked back, “Do you want it or not?”
“No,” Jane raised her eyebrows, looking pleased. “You keep it for yourself.”
Tom didn’t insist. Honestly, he wasn’t very keen on giving it away. So he withdrew his extended hand gently and said, “If there’s nothing else, I’ll go upstairs first.”
“Go ahead,” Jane didn’t stop him. Tom started walking upstairs.
The well-tailored suit he wore made him look particularly handsome. Jane watched her son proudly, always thinking Tom had a charismatic personality that many girls would like. But she also believed his standards were high, which is why he was still single.
Not long after, Williams came in. Jane quickly approached him and said, “I have something to tell you. Tom has a girl he likes.”
The middle-aged man handed his coat to the butler beside him and looked at his wife in confusion. “Who is she? Did he bring her home?”
The woman shook her head with a smile, “That girl bought him milk tea. He’s very tight-lipped about it.”
“Why wouldn’t he mention having a girlfriend?” Williams couldn’t understand. “Isn’t that making grandma busy for nothing? That lady is about to be brought here.”
Jane also didn’t understand and shook her head, “I don’t know what he’s thinking.”
“Did he read all those materials?” the man asked.
The woman shook her head again, “I don’t think so.”
Williams’ eyes darkened as he looked upstairs and started walking up.
Upstairs in the brightly lit study room.
Rows of categorized books were neatly arranged on the shelves. These books weren’t new; they showed signs of being read many times and many were collector’s editions.
Tom Fritz sat at his desk with an air of seriousness fitting for someone in research.
He inserted the straw into the cup and took a sip of the pudding-flavored drink. It was still warm and had a unique taste-rich yet subtly fragrant.
At that moment, there was a knock on the open door. Tom looked up to see his father stepping inside.
“Dad,” his calm gaze rested on his father’s face.
The resemblance between father and son was quite noticeable.
“Did you get a girlfriend?” Williams asked directly without any hint of disapproval.
“No,” Tom was slightly taken aback but answered truthfully. He looked at the milk tea in his hand and then back at his father, “Mom guessed?”
“Yes,” the middle-aged man nodded.
“I just brought home a cup of milk tea,” Tom Fritz was puzzled but couldn’t help smiling slightly, “and she concluded I got a girlfriend? Isn’t that a bit… jumping to conclusions?”
Williams naturally believed his son’s words.
His gaze fell on the documents about Lisa on the desk. He stepped forward, bent down to pick them up, and handed them back to Tom, “Since you don’t have a girlfriend, please take a detailed look at these materials.”
“Dad…” Tom didn’t reach out to take them; he frowned instead, “I thought you were open-minded.”
