“What?” Ruby blinked.
“Really, you’re not joking right?” She was still evidently shocked.
“I wouldn’t joke with a matter as serious as this.” He told her firmly. The idea of going to see June had been in his mind for days and he had finally decided to stop pushing it back and take the bull by the horns.
“You’re going to see her today?” Ruby asked him and he nodded. He knew June would be in her office today and he wondered what he would say to her when he got there. He also thought about how June seemed to trust herself and her plan so much that she actually didn’t consider him finding out about what she had done.
“I am.” He replied simply.
“Does she know you’re coming to see her?” Ruby asked again and he shook his head.
“She doesn’t, that would take the element of surprise away and I want her to be unsettled when I talk to her. That way she would speak freely and out of turn.” Jaxon explained to Ruby. He wanted June surprised so that when he sprang up on her, she would be flustered and make a mistake when talking.
Ruby paused for a moment and regarded him, a fork full of bacon hovering in the air as she did so.
“You’ve really thought this true, huh”
“I have.” He replied firmly.
“Be careful, okay, we don’t know what she’s entirely capable of,” Ruby warned.
“I won’t.” He reassured though he doubted June would be able to do anything he couldn’t handle. He knew she must have hired someone to take care of Serena all those months ago so he was sure she wasn’t capable of much alone. Her mind was the real danger.
“But don’t you trust me?” He asked cheekily with a smirk and Ruby threatened to smack him if he wouldn’t stop joking.
“I do trust you, it’s June who I’m wary about. What if she does something to you?” She told him and he felt touched that she cared.
“That’s not possible, and besides I know what she’s done so I won’t be going in blindly.”
“Oh, and don’t do anything rash while you’re there,” Ruby warned again and he sighed.
“Geez Ruby, why don’t you just tell me to not get into a fight and be a good boy while you’re at it.” He said in a teasing voice. Ruby made him sound like a little kid who she was warning not to pick a fight at the playground.
“I’m sorry, I’m just really worried.” She told him.
“I know you are. But I don’t want you to worry about anything, I’m going to take care of everything hmm,” he tried to put her at ease.
“Get back to eating your breakfast or it’ll get cold.” He gestured to her half-eaten plate then went back to eating.
The table went silent as they focused entirely on their meals. They finished up and Jaxon left Ruby at home and went about his plan.
On the drive to June’s office, he started going over the details of what he had found out with Damon. He wondered if there was more to the story that he had yet to find out. What he did know was that he was going to get to the bottom of the situation and deal with June in the process.
He pulled up outside her office and glanced around the exterior. He couldn’t remember the last time he had been there as June always came to his office instead. He walked in and some of the employees started scrambling about when they recognized him.
“Sir, do you want me to tell Miss June you’ve come to see her?” One of the employees that was vaguely familiar to him asked. The man was one of the employees responsible for appointments so Jaxon had come across him once or twice before.
” No, it’s fine. I’ll go up by myself.” He told the older man. Jaxon knew June would be around but he didn’t want to spoil that element of surprise. The man bid him goodbye and Jaxon strolled to the elevator and lazily pressed the button. He stopped at June’s floor and knocked on June’s door when he got there.
There was a loud “I’m coming” call from the other side of the door, and he thought he heard some shuffling. The door opened and June popped her head out.
“Mildred, I thought I told you to call me for-” June rushed out sharply, a fierce expression on her face. But when she saw it was him, her features suddenly morphed into a meek look, and he picked that up. This was what Ruby had been telling him.
“Jaxon, I wasn’t expecting you today or at all really. Come in, don’t just stand there.” June let out a bright smile on her face as she ushered him in. He stepped in and looked around her not so familiar office before he became alert again.
His face was filled with anger and his fists were tightly clenched beside him as he approached her desk.
“What a pleasant surprise Jaxon, you should have told me you were coming. I would have cleared my schedule for today.” June tried to grab his arm and he immediately stepped away from her reach. Her smile dropped and she looked at him with a pout.
“Why are you treating me like a stranger? Aren’t we friends?” June tried to look sad as she softly batted her eyes at him. Jaxon pinched the bridge of his nose in irritation and glared at her.
“The only reason why you are still alive and sitting so comfortably in this office is because of the small friendship or whatever shit you have with my grandfather. If someone else had dared to do what you did they wouldn’t be walking around freely by now.” Jaxon angrily said in a deep voice and June looked at him with confusion clear on her face.
“What do you mean? What did I do?” June thought about what Jaxon had found out. Her heartbeat accelerated and she started to feel a bit warm. She prayed in her heart that it wasn’t what she was thinking because if Jaxon found out she knew he would not spare her.
Jaxon’s eyes are fixed on hers and his mouth twitched when he saw the flash of fear in her eyes. He felt like laughing at her as she tried to mask her emotions with confusion but he could clearly see through her.
“You know exactly what you did June! How dare you? How dare you interfere with my affairs? Who gave you the right to sabotage my plans?” His voice was steady and controlled as he cut straight to the case. He didn’t want to sit around beating around the bush. She was not worth his time and he just wanted to hear the confirmation and reasons from her.
“I don’t know what you are talking about Jaxon. I would never do anything to go against you and you know that.” Sweat started to slowly roll down her forehead and she nervously wiped it off with her sleeves. Jaxon glared at her with resentment clear in his eyes and fear gripped June.
