Chapter 173
Jaxon froze. He hadn’t even thought that Ruby would be interested in knowing where he had been. But now that he thought about it, he and Damon had left without much explanation and it was only natural to be curious.
He remained quiet not because he didn’t have what to say but because he didn’t know how to
say it.
He was caught between telling Ruby the truth or brushing the situation off like it was nothing.
“Jaxon,” she whispered in a bid to get his attention but he was still lost in his head. He didn’t want to pour the news of Serena and June on Ruby, especially since she was pregnant.
He felt it would stress her out and she didn’t need that right now, or ever really. Bothering her was the last thing on his mind.
Ruby squeezed his arm to get his attention once again and he was forced to look at her.
“Jaxon, I know you’re hiding something from me.” True.
“And it only makes sense that whatever it is you’re hiding is connected to why you and Damon left the house.” Also true. But he was still thinking if it was worth it to tell her and put her at risk.
Jaxon didn’t care that he was exaggerating her reaction, he simply didn’t want her thinking of anything negative.
“I’m right, aren’t I?” She pressed.
“You are.” He spoke for the again for the first time since she had practically ambushed him with that question.
“Jaxon please tell me what’s going on, don’t hide anything from me. I thought we talked about this.” Ruby pleaded and Jaxon swallowed as he felt his resolve fading.
How could he keep anything from her when she was looking at him with those eyes of hers?
He and Ruby had talked about letting each other know what was going on in their lives. That had
come up after Ruby had been in a near-death situation again because she hadn’t told him what
was going on or she didn’t trust him enough to do so.
His heart still stung a bit, and he still remembered the very real fear he felt when he saw Kim in a deranged state, holding a knife against Ruby’s neck.
“All right.” He caved and Ruby sighed out in relief.
“So what happened?” She asked and he told her. He told her everything, from what he already knew to what he had just found out today. Ruby, to her credit, didn’t react the way he thought she would, and she even had similar expressions as him when he had also found out some of the things he was telling her.
“So you’re telling me Serena didn’t actually die and she’s still alive?” Ruby asked and he nodded.
He had been equally shocked when he found out. All that time he had thought Serena was dead but it was a part of June’s plan.
“And June’s the one behind it?” Ruby said more to herself than to him as she processed what he said.
“Who would have thought June was capable of such a thing and would have thought of this so
thoroughly. I really need to stop underestimating people because they are always more than
they seem.” Ruby stated and he couldn’t help but to agree. He wondered how long June had been obsessed with him and how he had never noticed any of her weird behaviors towards him.
There had to have been signs.
“I never really looked at her close enough to notice anything out of the ordinary.” He said then shrugged. There had never been any need to.
“Though frankly I’m not too surprised because she was something else when it was just her and I.” Ruby confessed and he looked at her surprised.
“Really? I never noticed anything like that.” He let out. Just how much did he not know about June?
“You wouldn’t have either because she was like a chameleon. If you were in the room, she was all daisies and roses and acted like she wouldn’t hurt a fly. But if you weren’t there… She revealed just how venomous she could be.” Ruby stated and he frowned. Had he really been that blind?
“Why didn’t you tell me? I could have done something about it.”
“I didn’t think you would believe me.” Ruby replied and his heart squeezed.
“Did she hurt you? Because if she did then hell would freeze over if I let her off the hook when I
find her.” He said in a cold voice but Ruby shook her head.
“No she didn’t hurt me, but she did say some mean things to me. And there were brief moments when I believed her.” Ruby told him and his frown deepened. He took her in his arms once again and whispered to her how he was sorry he didn’t know what June had done to her.
“It’s okay, I should have told you about it.” Ruby said.
“I don’t want you to worry about anything again, leave worrying about June to me, I’ll deal with her myself.” He cautioned.
“I know you will.” She stated.
“In the meantime, I want you to focus on growing me a baby. I heard that it’s hard work.” He joked and Ruby laughed. He placed his hand over her stomach and resumed drawing lazy circles on it.
“Don’t worry, the baby is growing just fine.” Ruby put her hand over his and gave it a light tap.
They stayed like that for a while then Ruby suddenly lifted her head and asked.
“What do you think the baby will be, a boy or a girl?”
“Any of them is fine.” He replied. He hadn’t really thought of it before.
“Okay, it’s late. You need to sleep.” He added when he looked at the time on his phone. They had gotten carried away with their talk.
Ruby got on the bed, and when she settled in, Jaxon promised to take her to the place where Kim was buried. With that, he wished her goodnight and placed a feather light kiss on her forehead.
