Chapter 172
Jaxon had found out so many things had happened right under his nose, and he was at the
center of it.
Yet he had been unaware of everything.
He glanced out the window of his car and stared absentmindedly at the sky. The sky had since gone dark and he could see some stars twinkling. He had spent longer than he planned to outside, and he hoped Ruby didn’t wait up for him. She was pregnant and needed all the rest she could get.
He got to the house, and he noticed there were no lights on, so he assumed Ruby had gone to bed. That thought lasted only a couple of minutes because he found Ruby waiting for him in the
living room.
“What are you doing here so late, you’re supposed to be resting.” Jaxon scolded at Ruby’s figure curled up in her favorite chair. He sighed out frustrated because he didn’t want to take his anger out on her.
” Where’s my grandfather? He already left?” He asked in a calmer voice and he got a nod from Ruby.
“I think he was burnt out from all the celebrating so he called it a day at about five in the evening,” Ruby told him.
“Well, that’s understandable.” He stated. The old man tended to forget his age when he was happy which always led to him being run down.
“Aren’t you cold?” He asked her when he noticed she was wearing one of her flimsy nightgowns
with barely their sleeves.
“A bit, but I’m fine really.” She responded and he would have believed her if he didn’t know that
Ruby got cold easily. He wouldn’t be surprised if he walked to her and felt her hands which he was almost a hundred percent sure would be cold as ice.
“You really should have gone to bed Ruby,” he complained as he got closer to her.
“What were you doing here anyway?” He asked again since she hadn’t replied the first time, then he helped her to her feet.
“I was waiting for you. Keith left and I was all alone, and I didn’t think you would spend the rest of the day out.” She explained and he sighed. Fuck, he should have called her and told her he would be late.
“It’s my fault, I should have called,” Jaxon said then ushered her out of the living and toward the stairs.
“Let me take you to bed, you must be tired.” He said when he saw her let out a yawn.
Jaxon’s mind then drifted to all the events of the day and found out that Serena wasn’t dead. She had been kidnapped and her death was faked. The most shocking news of all was finding out that it was June who was responsible and that she had done it to stop the contract from taking place. She had still failed because he had ended up finding a gem in the process.
You could have given him a good number of guesses and he wouldn’t have guessed she was the
one behind it. Why did it seem to him like he was always surrounded by crazy women? First Kim, now June.
He hadn’t noticed the time they had reached the bedroom, but when he had come back to himself, he and Ruby were already there.
Ruby sat on the bed and Jaxon sat beside her contemplating whether he should spill the beans
now. He had to though because he couldn’t hide something related to her sister from her.
“Ruby, I want to tell you something.” He started easy.
“What about?”
“It’s about your sister, I’ve buried her already.” He said slowly and watched as her features changed into one of realization.
“Oh, I- I wasn’t expecting that.” She let out nervously and Jaxon noticed her eyes were shining
with unshed tears.
“I thought I’d bring it up now in case you wanted to pay your last respects to your sister.” He told her.
He knew the matter of her sister was a delicate issue for her and he had really had to dig deep to summon the courage and bring it up to her. Ever since Kim had died, they hadn’t talked about the topic once but there were some days when he noticed Ruby would be lost in thought with a pained look on her face.
And the only thing he knew could cause it was the death of her sister.
It was a painful thing really, especially when he thought about the circumstances surrounding
her death and why she had untimely died in the first place. He couldn’t imagine what Ruby must be going through thinking about what happened.
“Thank you for telling me.” Ruby whispered. She hadn’t looked at him since he had broken the news to her. Back straight, she had looked straight ahead with her hair falling to cover the side of her face. And from the little view of her face he had, he knew she wasn’t crying. Or at least not yet because he knew she was trying to be strong and hold it in.
Jaxon put a comforting arm over Ruby’s shoulder and pulled her against him. She relaxed at his touch and Jaxon moved closer to her and started stroking her back slowly.
“You know, I would love to see Kim one last time.” Ruby told him and he placed a kiss on the top of her head.
“You have such a big heart.” He whispered to her, and it was true. He knew that decision. would not have been easy for her to make considering everything that happened.
His Gem was a sweetheart through and through and he wouldn’t change her for the world.
“When you’re ready, we will go to her resting place and you can pay your last respects.” He said and she nodded against him.
Jaxon’s hands trailed from her back to her still flat stomach and his hands lingered. He drew lazy circles on her stomach as he thought about the fact that a life was growing inside of her.
A baby, their baby. He still couldn’t believe that he would be a father in the next couple of months.
Ruby shifted against him until she was sitting up properly and this time, her eyes met his.
“Jaxon what happened, where were you today?”
