Pregnant? No, no, no… It’s just not possible. It can’t be. A million thoughts ran through Ruby’s
head at the possibility that she could be pregnant.
Jaxon had been careful, but her? She didn’t want to think too far, maybe Nana was just saying things and it had to be just wishful thinking on Nana’s part.
She couldn’t be pregnant, Ruby thought, yet a sinking feeling in her chest told her otherwise. Her
hands went clammy as she remembered she hadn’t taken the birth control pills Jaxon had given her.
She couldn’t exactly recall why but she did change out the pills and started taking vitamins instead.
Ruby’s heart missed a beat as she thought of where actually being pregnant would lead to.
She didn’t even want to imagine it. What would Jaxon think? She was sure that an argument had
occurred between them relating to the very issue of kids where Jaxon had told her he wasn’t ready to have kids yet.
Damn it, was she even ready to have kids herself? She highly doubted it because the possibility had never really crossed her mind or become quite tangible… Until now.
Ruby was in denial and she refused to believe that for one moment she could be pregnant. Nana
had to be wrong for even asking her that in the first place. It just wasn’t possible.
She plastered a nervous smile on her face and then looked Nana in the eyes.
“Nana, I can’t be pregnant right now, Jaxon and I aren’t looking to have kids yet.” She stated and hoped Nana would believe her because she didn’t even believe herself.
Pregnancy was a very real possibility.
“Nonsense! You both are married, the next logical step is to have children of course so what do you mean you aren’t looking to have one right now?” Ruby let out a sigh only she could hear.
Why wouldn’t Nana leave the topic alone?
“Well, we want to enjoy ourselves in the marriage a little longer before bringing kids to the world.
You know our hands will be full after that.” She explained and Nana gave her a thoughtful look.
“I get it. All you young people really want to enjoy some alone time, hmm,” Nana asked, then gave her a knowing look, and Ruby’s eyes widened slightly as she blushed. She hadn’t expected Nana
to say something so out of pocket.
“I guess so.” She mumbled suddenly, feeling shy.
“How can you be so sure you aren’t pregnant anyway, I have to tell you that pregnancy can be
one of the most unpredictable things my dear… Have you checked before to make sure?” Nana
pressed and Ruby fought not to groan out loud.
She really hoped the conversation would end
soon because the atmosphere was getting more awkward by the second.
“… No, I haven’t, i-”
“See, there you go!” Nana cut her off and yelled triumphantly.
“I wanted to say it’s not possible.” She let out angrily then felt bad when the happiness slowly
dimmed from Nana’s eyes. But it had to be done.
Ruby physically shivered as she thought of Nana, in all her happiness, going to tell Jaxon she was pregnant and unknowingly causing a problem between them.
“I must just be bloated from eating too much. It’s as simple as that, Nana, I’m not pregnant.” She
told her and the light in Nana’s eyes went out completely.
Even as Ruby spoke, she had a hard time believing the words she had just said. She couldn’t quite put her finger on it, but there was a nagging feeling at the back of her head. Ruby knew herself very well and she knew that was definitely not a good sign.
“Oh, what a Shame that is.” Nana sighed and Ruby nodded her head.
“It is.” She agreed in a low voice.
“I really wish you were, then I would finally have my very own grandbaby running around.” Nana
said and Ruby didn’t know what to say to that.
“Then I can rub having a grandbaby in all the other grannies’ faces during our girls’ getaway.”
Nana added suddenly with such a determined look on her face that Ruby couldn’t help but to
laugh.
“Nana, you crack me up,” Ruby said as happy tears flowed down her cheeks. Nana was really something else.
“Quit laughing and do a nice job of making me a grandbaby, and hopefully, it’s really soon. I’m tired of waiting. Lord knows Jaxon had made me wait long enough before he finally married you.
I’m sure I have gray hairs that sprouted out of worry, and it was all his fault.” Nana said again with a fierce expression on her face and Ruby knew she was thinking about how Jaxon had refused to get married initially.
Ruby admired the way Nana had taken it upon herself to be a wonderful mother figure to Jaxon
even when she didn’t have to be. Even though no one asked her to, she had raised Jaxon like her own child.
“Alright Nana.” She whispered.
She finished up in the bathroom and she and Nana left immediately after.
They met Keith but Ruby didn’t quite notice him. Instead, her mind had done a three sixty and was playing back the conversation she had with Nana.
Ruby silently prayed that she wasn’t pregnant because she knew that Jaxon would be pissed if
he found out.
Ruby didn’t want any more issues to arise in their relationship because lately a lot of things had been testing it. They had gone through so many ups and downs to get to where they were and now that they were finally at a good place, she would be damned if she let anything spoil it.
Ruby’s heart squeezed and guilt washed over her like it was already a confirmed fact that she was pregnant. And as the minutes ticked by, the fear in her grew at Jaxon’s reaction to her being pregnant.
She wasn’t. She told herself stubbornly but she knew she was only telling herself that to make herself feel better.
Ruby was persistent however and continued to repeat it in her head over and over again that she
wasn’t pregnant. She just couldn’t be.
