Evening rolled around, and Jaxon ordered the driver to hurry up so that he could pick Ruby up.
He glanced at his watch, saw it was half past five then sighed.
He was late, and he hated being late. He had promised Ruby that he would pick her up by five but he had gotten carried away with work that he didn’t notice when the time went by. It had gone by so fast that before he realized what was happening, it was already almost five and he was nowhere near where Ruby was.
The driver pulled up outside the building and Jaxon got out of the car in a rush. He made his way into the house and there was an evident bounce in his steps as he went. He met Ruby waiting for him and immediately started to apologize.
“I’m sorry Gem, I got caught up with work.” He apologized as Ruby came up to him and hugged
him.
“It’s okay, I understand.” She whispered against his chest and his chest rumbled at the heat of her skin.
“Did you have a good time?” He asked her as they walked to the car. He saw her eyes glaze over in thought for a second before she responded.
“I did.” She told him and he thought he heard a bit of hesitancy in her voice. He was probably just
imagining things, he thought.
They got into the car, and the driver immediately pulled out of his parking spot, and they were off.
They sat in silence for five minutes and Jaxon used that time to study Ruby.
She sat against the door as she usually did and peered out the window. From where he sat, he
had a not-so-good view of her eyes following the vehicles and buildings they passed. He glanced
down at her and his gaze turned from studying to appreciative. He cast a very good look down Ruby’s body and sighed. She looked very desirable today.
She had worn a dress that stopped at her knees showing off her gorgeous legs as she sat. The
the shirt she wore molded against her breasts and he eyed it to his satisfaction.
She had spent time on her hair today, let it down, and styled it in a way that the loose tendrils of hair fell and framed her face, which gave her an innocent look.
The only thing that snagged his attention away from admiring her was the lone pair of bandages around her neck. A reminder of what she had been
through recently.
“How’s your neck?” He voiced out. He knew she was still healing, and nicely at that but that didn’t stop him from wondering when the bandage would be removed. He had wondered that for a while now.
“It’s getting better.” She replied when she turned to him.
“Does it still hurt a lot?” He asked and she shook her head.
“Just a tiny bit and it’s only when I turn my neck,” Ruby answered and he nodded. Something had
been turning in his mind and he didn’t know whether this was the right time to just drop it on
Ruby.
He didn’t know but he did so anyway.
“I’m announcing our relationship to the public tomorrow.” He stated and he watched as Ruby’s
features morphed from being blank to confusion then finally surprise.
“What?” She blinked.
“Did I hear you right?” She asked again as she continued to stare at him like a fish out of water.
“You heard me right, I’m going to announce our relationship to the public tomorrow. Everyone will know you’re my wife and not to be messed with.” He told her.
“Why do you look so surprised?” He added after a moment and Ruby blinked.
“I… Just wasn’t expecting it, that’s why.” She paused for a moment then continued.
“It just seems so out of the blue.” He thought about what she said for a moment and seemed to agree.
“It might be out of the blue for you but I actually have been planning this for a while. I was just
waiting for it to be official before letting you know.” He explained and she nodded slowly.
“So, what do you think?”
“I agree, so everyone is going to know I’m still your wife tomorrow huh? And there’s no contract,” she stated but it sounded more like a question to him.
“Everyone is going to find out tomorrow.” He affirmed.
Jaxon really couldn’t wait for tomorrow. He wanted the news to be released and it was not just
because of the whole contract saga that he was doing this.
The contract saga hadn’t really affected him as much as some people might think. His business was doing just fine and he had experienced no losses. What really prompted him to push this news forward was that they kept talking badly about his wife. So he wanted to use an official statement to shut them up and get them to stop calling her names.
He didn’t know if Ruby was seeing the news about herself but he guessed not since she seemed fine. Ruby wasn’t one to hide her emotions, he always knew when something was off.
He glanced at her again and his eyes immediately went to the bandage around her neck.
“You know you’ll be in the public eye tomorrow and they can’t see your bandages or they might
start to make some unnecessary assumptions.” He told her. He didn’t want to think of the kind of stories that would pop up if he introduced her as his wife and then she was shown to have an
injury in a questionable place.
He reached across the car seat and Ruby sat still as he removed the bandage around her neck.
There was a thin line on her neck and he could see that it was healed up and was starting to fade in some places. He vaguely remembered the doctor telling him and Ruby that the injury would fade with time since the wound wasn’t that deep.
Jaxon looked up at Ruby and noticed her eyes tear up. He watched as a lone tear rolled down her cheek and dropped on his finger.
“Hey, don’t cry.” He whispered.
“The scar-”
“Is going to fade, the doctor told us himself, so you don’t have to worry.” He assured her.
He leaned forward and pressed a chaste kiss on her lips.
“Come here,” he let out and he pulled Ruby against him until she straddled him.
