Jaxon’s mind was running in circles as he pulled up at the house.
He had told Ruby he would handle the press and he did just that when he had called Damon and told him to get all news of them off the press.
They had succeeded at first when all articles were removed and things had gone quiet. But that was only for a few hours.
What Jaxon wasn’t capable of stopping was word of mouth. People still talked about the articles, and before he knew it, new, more outrageous articles and magazines had come up with a more scandalous version of the story.
They had written something about Ruby being a prostitute and secret employee of his whom he had paid to keep other women off his back because he didn’t actually want to get married and wanted to change women as often as he liked.
And that was the least scandalous story of the bunch. The truth of the matter was in there somewhere but it had quickly been distorted with the amount of lies being added to the story. He had to give it to the press, they definitely knew how to cook up a story and make it sell.
He had underestimated how his rivals would take the news as well and run with it and they had also added their own contributions to the story to make him look bad.
They had done this in a bid to steal some big clients from his company but thankfully, he only dealt with smart people who didn’t believe everything they saw on the news
. Even if they did believe it, his personal life was just that, personal. It didn’t have anything to do with his business. He had dealt with his rivals easily but his only issue was stopping the story from reoccurring on the news.
If it had been a couple of months ago, he wouldn’t have bothered because he knew sooner or later that the news of the contract would have fizzled out, and everyone would forget that it had ever even happened.
But that wasn’t a couple of months ago. It was now and some set of people were drawing out the story and talking bad about him and Ruby. Especially Ruby.
The whole reason he was so worried about what the press was saying was because of how Ruby would react if she saw all the things they said about her.
He had done his utmost best to keep the news away from her but he could only do so much. She had just recovered from a traumatic event and he didn’t want anything triggering her for fear that the damage done could be severe.
Jaxon gave Damon a call and told him to monitor the situation with the press and immediately take down any articles that popped up concerning them. He ended the call and strolled into the house with determined steps.
He needed to find Ruby and maybe take her out to cheer her up some more and hopefully get her away from the news. He didn’t want her to see any of the nasty comments made about her.
He checked the kitchen and then the living room, but she wasn’t in her favorite chair. He went up the stairs, taking two steps at a time, and made his way to their bedroom. Empty. So was the bathroom and every other room in the hallway.
He went to other parts of the house to look for Ruby but she wasn’t there. She was gone. He had started to panic but he pushed it down and thought there must be a logical explanation to where she was.
Ever since the incident at the hotel, he had been paranoid about Ruby leaving the house without telling him or taking either Ruslan or Lucas.
Jaxon shoved his hand into his pocket and brought out his phone, immediately dialing Ruby’s number. Come on… Come on, pick up he thought as the line rang and rang and rang then went to voicemail.
He let out a sigh as he tried to call her two more times but the same thing happened both times. The line would ring before the call would go to voicemail.
He glanced at his watch wearily then sighed again. Where was she? She was usually home by this time so where could she have possibly gone? His mind flashed to Ruslan and Lucas and he thought they might know where she was. He dialed Ruslan’s number and Ruslan picked up on the first ring.
“Boss?” Ruslan’s gruff voice came through the line.
“I don’t have time to waste, is Ruby with you?” Jaxon asked anxiously as he paced around the living room. Not being able to find Ruby in any part of the house, he had come back down to think.
“She isn’t.” Shit.
“Do you at least know where she is?” He gritted out.
“No, I’m only aware that she left. I tried to stop her.” Ruslan told him and Jaxon felt like throwing his phone across the room.
“So you don’t know where she is… What about Lucas, where is he?”
“He doesn’t know where she is either and he’s with me,” Ruslan replied and Jaxon clenched his fist.
“So both of you were here and you let her go out alone?? And you didn’t even have the sense to ask her where she was heading to or call me? What if she’s in danger?” He yelled, frustrated.
Ruslan was sensible enough to keep quiet at the other end of the line and Jaxon sighed.
“Both of you should come to the house now.” He instructed in a threatening voice then ended the call.
He paced around the living room some more as he thought of all the situations Ruby could possibly be in. He didn’t know why he felt this way, but he thought that Ruby was in danger and he couldn’t shake the feeling off.
The door opened and Ruslan and Lucas pushed through with their heads bowed. They walked up to him and he didn’t give them the time to do anything.
He landed a punch squarely on Ruslan’s jaw and Ruslan didn’t move to fight back. Lucas, who was at his side, didn’t move either and waited for his turn. Jaxon knew Lucas was aware his own punch was coming. He did just that and dusted his suit off right after.
“Go get the car started.” He demanded and Lucas went to do as he ordered.
Jaxon remembered that he had placed a tracker on Ruby’s phone some time ago when it had gotten particularly dangerous for her. The tracker had blinked and showed where Ruby was. Her old house. Jaxon knew what that meant.
He didn’t waste any time and rushed off with Ruslan and Lucas.
