The tears that had stopped flowing from Kim’s eyes resumed their descent down her cheeks. Her tears though, were not from being sad but served the purpose to guilt trip Ruby into doing what she wanted.
“But Kim, you can’t really mean that,” Ruby put in then gave her a worried look.
“Of course I mean it. You are a bad sister who never takes her younger sister’s side. I just wanted you to talk to Damon for me, I didn’t ask you to build a rocket or something.” She fired back with an annoyed look.
Her eyes searched Ruby’s and all she could see was the hurt in them. Not what she was going for but she could make it work, Kim thought.
“You couldn’t even have said just no and ended it there. No, you had to tell me all the reasons why you said so and that made me feel inadequate and childish.” She told Ruby in a whimpering voice.
Kim wasn’t happy with the way things had been playing out so far. First, she and Damon had argued and then he had unexpectedly ended things with her. And now, Kim found it difficult to convince her usually gullible sister to talk to him for her. All these tasks were supposed to be a piece of cake for her but now things were different. Her manipulation skills had diminished considerably. She has to rectify that somehow.
“Let me explain okay,” Ruby said to her but she didn’t respond. Ruby went on ahead to explain anyway.
“It’s not that I don’t want to help you, I’m just trying to make you see that relationships can’t be forced. Damon has made his choice and I think you should respect that.” Ruby told her slowly.
“But you could just talk to him, I’m not really asking for much.” Kim still pressed and Ruby sighed deeply.
“No Kim, listen-”
“No, you listen. Do you know what I think? I think you just don’t want to help me. ” Kim said to her as she cut her off.
“It’s not like that Kim.” Ruby breathed out in a frustrated voice.
“It isn’t? Just admit you’re a bad sister who can’t take her own sister’s side in anything.” Kim fired angrily.
“I’m not taking anyone’s side!” Ruby all but yelled. “I’m just trying to be logical here,” Ruby said again.
“You’re just trying to be logical by taking Damon’s side.” She countered. Ruby sighed deeply and smacked her forehead with her palm.
“Kim, I’m tired of turning around in circles with you,” Ruby told her.
Well, I’m not, Kim wanted to respond but she kept silent instead.
“Can you please calm down,” Ruby said to her with a worried expression on her face. Kim was the farthest thing from calm but she recognized it was a lost cause to try to get Ruby to do what she wanted.
She hadn’t said anything to Ruby in response before Ruby stepped forward and took her hands, then intertwined their fingers together. Kim wanted to pull away but decided not to at the last minute just to see where it was headed.
“So, are you calm now?” Ruby asked her gently and Kim almost rolled her eyes. Her tears had stopped flowing so maybe that was where Ruby had gotten the idea that she was fine with everything that happened.
“Yes.” Lie. She let out that one word because she didn’t trust herself to not start shouting again.
“I’m going to say this again and don’t be angry with me but you should move on. Damon isn’t the only man in the world and I’m sure many others would love to be with you.” Ruby advised as a small smile framed her lips.
“You’re pretty and smart and would be a great catch to a lot of guys.” Ruby complimented. Ruby’s fingers were still intertwined with hers and Ruby had started to squeeze her fingers lightly.
Ruby talked to her about everything and anything, and in the process, she got glimpses of Ruby’s life with Jaxon.
She tried her best to swallow her anger even as she thought about it not being fair that Ruby had the life she wanted so badly. She kept her cool under lock and key because there was no point in crying and yelling. It has already been established that Ruby wouldn’t do anything for her.
As Ruby talked, Kim found herself zoning out as she thought about literally anything else. She was tired of the conversation but didn’t want to let Ruby know either. In the blink of an eye, a little over twenty minutes passed and that was when Kim noticed Ruby had paused.
“Woah, I really need to leave,” Ruby told her as she glanced at her phone. Just then, Jaxon came around the corner he had disappeared to about forty minutes prior. He didn’t even bother to glance in her direction which angered her to no end.
He paid no heed to her and instead drew Ruby closer and gave her a short kiss on the forehead.
Ruby smiled and hugged Jaxon then kept her arms around him in a loving gesture.
Kim was left to stand at the sidelines and observe them which angered her even more than before. It was one thing to know who Ruby was and how he treated her, it was a totally different ball game to see them up close being all lovey-dovey.
Kim fought hard to swallow the scowl she would have directed their way. Jealousy flared within her as she watched them through hooded eyes.
“Are you ready to leave Gem?” She heard Jaxon say and she almost grimaced. Gem? They had got to be kidding her.
Kim didn’t want to be in their presence any longer. She’d had it already.
“I am,” Ruby replied to Jaxon then turned around to face her.
“We’ve got to go, Kim, so see you around okay? And take care of yourself.” Ruby told her and she nodded and gave her the best fake smile she could muster. She didn’t say anything because she didn’t trust herself to speak.
Ophelia had already returned as well and Ruby offered her goodbyes. Kim also noticed that Jaxon didn’t bother with Ophelia either. He only seemed to come alive when Ruby was involved. They both left shortly after and that left Ophelia and her all alone.
“You okay there?” Ophelia asked but she wasn’t in the mood to answer. Instead, she turned around silently and headed for the exit.
