Chapter 80
Ruby stared at June, surprised to see her there.
“What are you doing here? She blurted out. Jaxon had not told her he was meeting her that day. But why would he? June only glanced at her with an irritated expression before saying,
“Shouldn’t I be asking you that? You don’t exactly have a place here.” June spat with venom. She was looking at Ruby like she was the filth beneath her shoes.
Ruby’s eyebrows shot up in shock. Wasn’t this the same June who acted so sweet and docile when Jaxon was around? But now, she revealed her claws and showed how nasty she could be.
Gone were the innocent doe eyes and gentle expression. They had been replaced by angered eyes and a spiteful expression. She has even had Ruby fooled with her convincing act.
Ruby looked at June confused and wondered why June was staring at her like she had done something seriously wrong to her.
She has always had that look in her eyes but this time, it was different. More hateful.
“What does Jaxon even see in you anyway?” June sneered as she glanced at her from under her lashes.
“Something he didn’t find in you.” Ruby shot back angrily. She was getting tired of always being looked down upon by Jaxon’s admirers.
June fired a glare in her direction and just that look alone was able to put some people six feet under. June’s glare intensified as she observed Ruby from head to toe.
She was about to say something, probably something horrible, Ruby reckoned. But those words never came as June finally noticed what she was carrying. Her eyes froze over it and a slow smile grew on her lips. That couldn’t be good.
“What that’s you got there, lunch?” June asked. She tilted her head up and a thoughtful expression appeared on her face.
“Oh, I get it now. No wonder Jaxon married you.” She told herself rather than him in particular.
“What? I don’t get it.” Ruby told her with raised eyebrows.
” Jaxon really hit the jackpot getting an all in one maid.” June said to her, indirectly. Ruby stated still then her mind recounted what June had said. A maid? She stared at the packed lunch in her hands and nearly dropped it. June had started to get on her nerves.
“And yet you are just dying for the position,” She fired back with the same feigning ignorance. June’s eyes narrowed into slits as she looked at Ruby with cold eyes.
“Do you know why Jaxon married you instead?” This question shocked Ruby and she nodded sarcastically, wanting to hear what would happen after.
“It’s because he wanted someone easy who would do what he wanted without any questions.” June told her with a smile.
Ruby glanced at June with rage. Her hands itched to slap her badly as June continued to call her names. She stood silently, waiting, but it was the statement that June had made that struck a nerve.
“Why don’t you have Jaxon’s ring on your finger?” June asked incredulously. Ruby stared at her jewelry less hands and sighed. Since they had started this conversation, this was the first time that something June had said had been correct.
Jaxon hadn’t given her a ring and she had not bothered to ask either as this was a contract marriage that would shortly end. It hadn’t bothered her before but now that June had pointed it out, it made her feel inadequate. Jaxon had not even thought to buy her a ring made her think it didn’t even cross his mind.
“I wanted something else.” She replied as a means to save face. It seemed to have worked as June’s eyes widened.
“Oh, and what is it?”
“Something that’s between married couples.” She muttered and enjoyed the way June’s face had turned red from anger.
With that, Ruby left the fuming June who was still glaring at the place where she had been standing. She walked to Jaxon’s office as her mind raced on the things June had told her.
She was mortified and thought people might see her as Jaxon’s live-in mistress or something simply because she didn’t have a ring.
She nearly bumped into the office door as she had been so out of it. She knocked, then waited and two seconds later, a firm “come in”came through it.
She walked in with the lunch in tow. When she saw Jaxon sitting behind his desk she seemed to find it hard to breathe properly. He was wearing his regular suits that always looked like a million bucks on him, they probably were, she thought. His hair had been styled perfectly and from where she stood, she felt that air of confidence he always exuded. She was attracted to him, pure and simple and no matter what she did that attraction would not go away.
“I brought you your lunch,” she told him as she set the pack on his desk. She felt his eyes on her but she didn’t want to look at him.
“Thank you.” He told her.
“But you really didn’t have to.” He added.
“But I did.”
“Why don’t you sit down?” He uttered, then gestured to the one of the chairs littered across his office.”take your pick.”
She settled into the one closest to her but still made it a point to not look at him directly. Instead she glanced around his office to burn time. But after five minutes of him not saying anything,
She got tired and looked at him. Only to find him staring right back at her.
“Ruby, is something wrong?” He asked her as soon as he caught her eye. She didn’t know what she wanted to tell him. Yes, I’m fine, even though that wasn’t true and she was just saying it so he would not push further and try to find out what happened. Or simply say no because she could and wanted to be truthful.
“Gem?” He called her, knocking her out of her thoughts. A lot of things had happened but there was in fact one question that continuously popped in her head.
“Jaxon, do you like me or not?”
