Lunch

Ruby was woken by the sun’s rays streaming through the window. She turned several times before she finally opened her eyes. She stretched happily and turned only to see that she was alone in the bed.
Her cheeks grew hotter as the images of all that transpired the previous night started replaying like a movie in her mind.
She grabbed a pillow and shoved her face into it as she screamed. She brought it down and patted her flaming cheeks.
“Did that really happen last night?” She thought aloud and squealed like a teenage girl that just been complimented by her crush.
She hugged the pillow tightly as she remembered the sweet words that Jaxon whispered to her.
“He cares about me. Does that mean he is beginning to love me!” She felt giddy as she talked to herself.
She hurriedly got down from the bed and went to take a warm bath. She prepared a rose scented bath for herself and soaked for about fifteen minutes before she patted her skin dry and applied her moisturizer.
She hurriedly applied her skincare products and rushed to the closet to search for something beautiful to wear.
She felt like wearing something simple yet pretty and she rummaged through her side of the closet before she finally decided to wear a pretty pink sundress.
She styled her hair into a ponytail using a black ribbon as she wanted to keep it simple. She applied lipgloss to her lips and skipped out of the room.
She was excited to see Jaxon.
“Good morning ma’am” Ruslan greeted her immediately as she walked into the living room. “Good morning Ruslan.” She replied with a wide smile.
“Where is your boss?” She asked as there was no sign of Jaxon in the living room or kitchen.
“Boss went out very early this morning as he has a lot of work to complete at the company today.” Ruslan replied politely and Ruby’s face fell as she felt sad about not seeing Jaxon before he left.
“Why didn’t he wake me up before leaving?” She whispered with a pout. She looked like a kicked puppy and if she had puppy ears they would be flat on her head at this moment.
“Boss didn’t want to wake you up and he instructed everyone to stay away from your room until you came down by yourself.” Ruslan replied and she shook her head at the last part.
She missed him. Ruby wanted to see Jaxon but she couldn’t just walk into his office and disrupt his work.
She knew that he had been away for some time and his workload had doubled but she was anxious to see him.
She groaned as she couldn’t think of anything and just then her stomach growled in hunger. She smiled sheepishly as she made eye contact with Ruslan.
“Have a seat while I get you your breakfast.” Ruslan said and she felt a light bulb go off in her head.
“How about you help me prepare lunch for Jaxon?” She grinned and Ruslan felt like crying.
“Whatever you want ma’am, but you must eat first or the boss will be angry at me for not carrying out his instructions.” Ruslan said and she nodded happily as she followed him to the kitchen.
She sat on the kitchen counter and Ruslan brought out a covered plate from the oven. He kept it beside her and took out a bottle of orange juice from the fridge and set it beside the plate.
Ruby opened it and moaned at the sweet aroma of her favorite banana pancakes topped with honey. Her eyes shined with excitement as she took a bean and she couldn’t help but moan in delight.
“This is so delicious, who prepared it?” She asked and Ruslan smiled at her.
“The boss made it before he left.” Ruby felt her heart smile at the sweet gesture and she felt even more determined to bring him lunch.
“What do you suggest I prepare for lunch?” Ruslan asked.
“Chicken tenders and sauce… Jaxon loves that. The sauce should not be too spicy.” She replied with a soft smile and Ruslan nodded as he immediately got to work. He took some chicken breasts out of the freezer and dropped them in a bowl.
He walked to the spices rack and looked at the different options before him. Ruby smiled as she silently watched him from the counter.
“I’ll deal with the spices, you can wash the chicken breasts and cut them into strips.” Ruby instructed and Ruslan nodded as he started working. She had to be careful with the spices. Jaxon hates spicy foods.
Ruby hurriedly finished eating and mixed the flour and spices that they would be dipping the chicken strips in.
They finished up quickly and she started cutting vegetables for the spicy sauce as Ruslan fried the chicken tenders. At times she wishes she could do the cooking herself but she couldn’t and she has long stopped trying to overcome her fear of fire.
“This looks and smells delicious, nice work Ruslan.” Ruby complimented him as she served the dish into the lunch box that he gave her.
She smiled happily as Ruslan drove her to Jaxon’s office. It was a thirty minutes drive and before long Ruslan parked in front of the massive building and she felt excitement flood her being as she hurriedly dropped from the car, with the lunch box held tightly in her right hand she walked into the company building.
“Good morning ma’am.” The receptionist greeted politely with a warm smile and Ruby smiled back at her as she made her way to the elevator.
She entered the empty lift and came down on Jaxon’s floor. She started walking down the long hallway and halted midway when she saw June walking toward Jaxon’s office. She just didn’t like the woman and the interested look she had on her face each time she saw Jaxon.
Ruby’s smile immediately dropped and she felt her grip around the lunch box tighten as she started to feel her blood boil in anger.
