Chapter 71
Jaxon’s eyes widened in shock as his eyes landed on Ruby but he immediately masked it and kept his face neutral.
He made sure she was deeply asleep before he left the room so why was she there?. Jaxon thought.
Ruby looked at him with a horrified expression and he knew she had overheard his conversation.
She had a very bad dream and after waking up to an empty bed she felt scared. She had run out of the room and went out in search of Jaxon when she heard his voice coming from the dimly lit office.
She grabbed the door handle and was about to walk in when she heard Jaxon speaking to someone on the phone but what caught her attention was when she heard her sister’s name being mentioned.
Why was Jaxon talking about her sister? She thought.
She paid closer attention and her eyes widened in fear as she finally understood everything. The attack on her earlier wasn’t a mistake and Jaxon knew the cause of it.
“Why is mine and my sister’s life in danger?” Ruby asked shakily and Jaxon pinched the bridge of his nose in irritation.
“Where did you get that idea from? and why are you awake, Ruby?” Jaxon asked in a soft voice.
“Stop acting dumb and answer my question Jaxon, what did you mean by my sister’s life is in danger?” Ruby asked angrily.
“Calm down Ruby, why don’t we go back to sleep and talk about this tomorrow?” Jaxon said calmly and walked up to Ruby.
He placed his hand on her shoulders and she immediately shrugged off his and took a step back.
“Don’t touch me! I want you to answer my questions right now! Why is my sister’s life in danger and why was I almost shot to death this evening?” Ruby yelled.
“Why are you trying to create a problem where there’s none? Your sister’s life is perfectly safe. I just arranged security for her since you are now my wife and she is your sister. The media would obviously try to disturb her to get information about us.” Jaxon explained.
“Why are you lying to me? I heard you say my sister’s life was in danger and the fact that I was attacked proves it.” Ruby felt rage building in her as Jaxon lied straight to her face. She felt insulted, why was he playing with her intelligence? She heard all that he said so why was he denying it?
“Why would I lie to you Gem? I just felt the need to keep her safe.” Jaxon asked softly and reached for her hands.
“Do I look like a fool to you Jaxon? I need answers or I’m walking out of this room and house at this instant.” Ruby warned.
“Why won’t you believe me, Ruby? Have I ever done anything to make you feel uncomfortable? I just want her to be safe so why are you doubting me?” Jaxon felt irritated.
“I don’t believe you Jaxon! Because thinking back on it since I met you. I’ve been encountering life threatening situations and today was just the icing on the cake, I was almost shot and you didn’t look shocked when you came home nor did you sound shocked when Ruslan called. What is going on?” Ruby felt like crying in anger and frustration as she ranted.
Something was wrong and Ruby felt it in her bones, she knew what she heard and she felt scared. She couldn’t wrap her head around what was happening and she felt her blood boil as she glared at Jaxon.
She hated being lied to and that was exactly what Jaxon was doing.
Jaxon felt the heated glare directed at him and he heard the seriousness in her voice but he couldn’t possibly tell her the truth.
How was she going to feel when she found out that her father who she loved and adored so much was embezzling funds from the mafia and also telling out their secret? She was probably not aware that her father was a part of that dark world.
“What did you expect me to do Ruby? Cry because you were almost shot? Was I supposed to be screaming at the top of my lungs and rolling on the floor when Ruslan called? I was in the middle of a business deal and I dropped everything to come to you. Is that not enough? Wasn’t I there when you needed me?” Jaxon asked, hissing in anger.
“I’m not good at comforting people but I tried my best to make you feel better and I even went the extra mile to protect your sister so what more do you want Ruby? I told you it was nothing!” Jaxon ran his hands through his hair in frustration as he ranted and Ruby felt like exploding in anger.
“I’m not a fucking child, stop trying to emotionally blackmail me and tell me the truth! I can’t be scared for my life every second of the day Jaxon! I can’t stand being lied to” Ruby shouted in frustration.
“I can’t keep living like this! I can’t be scared for my life every second of the day. Being with you is a nightmare! It’s like a death sentence!” Ruby yelled and regret immediately filled her eyes.
Jaxon clenched his eyes in anger and glared at her heatedly.
“If that’s what you think then I think you should leave! Why the fuck are you still stuck in the nightmare? Is it because of my money? Are you now used to the luxury that you can’t afford to leave it behind?” Jaxon scoffed in a cold voice.
“Just because I’m being nice to you it doesn’t mean that we are in the same position Ruby, know your place and watch your tone and the words you throw at me… if it’s so hard to live with me you can go out there and die for all I care!” Jaxon yelled and Ruby flinched in fear but she was too blinded by her anger to back away from the conversation.
“If I could I would have left but I can’t because you have stupidly exposed my sister and me to a danger we know nothing about. You must take responsibility for it.” Ruby angrily shot back.
“Responsibility? Who do you think you are Ruby? You are nothing but a contact wife! You are no better than a maid so what made you think that I’ll waste my time and resources on you?” Jaxon angrily said.
“You are not even worthy to breathe the same air as me and your life is as worthless as that of a street rat so what makes you feel you can talk to me however you want?” Ruby felt her chest tighten as Jaxon’s insults hit her hard.
“I hate you! You are the worst human being I have ever met! No wonder you are so alone… you do not deserve to be loved or cared for you devil!” Ruby shouted as tears streamed down her face.
Jaxon felt like he might just shoot her at any moment so he angrily stomped out of the study room and house.
He needed to breathe and he needed to do it away from Ruby before he killed her out of anger.
