Chapter 40
Ruby was still in shock at what just happened, she found it impossible to believe. She tried to remember if there was anything she’d done to him to make him so angry, but there was none she could even think of.
She was literally in tears as she cleaned off the mess that Jaxon made.
She was already done with cleaning when she heard her phone ring.
Her eyes widened in surprise as she was the caller.
It was Nana.
Ruby’s eyes widened in surprise as she wondered why she was calling at that hour. She quickly wiped off her tears and cleared her throat as she picked up the call.
“Hi Nana, good evening. How are you doing?” Ruby asked, sounding to should jovial.
“I’m good dear. And you?” Nana asked.
“I’m fine” Ruby replied.
“That’s good to know my dear. I’m actually calling you to inform you of something very crucial..” she began in a low tone as Ruby’s brows furrowed.
She hoped it was not to go meet Jaxon because she was definitely not going to do that!
“Is there anything you need?” Ruby questioned.
“I’m sorry sorry for not calling you earlier. I had to go to the insurance company with my daughter. There’s something very important I really need to tell you..” she began as Ruby shook her head slowly, wondering what it was that Nana wanted to tell her.
“I know your husband would definitely not tell you so..” she chuckled sheepishly.
“I hope it’s not something serious..” Ruby asked in a low voice, already hinting at the fact that whatever Nana wanted to tell her was related to Jaxon acting up.
“Not really… it’s just that today happens to be the day that his mother passed and it’s like the worst day of his life every year. He prefers to be alone and acts up a lot, so I just hope there’s no problem there” Nana informed as Ruby pursed.
So that was the reason for his attitude, his mother’s death anniversary, then why was he taking it out on her as she caused it? He almost killed her.
“Jaxon can do the unthinkable and there was time he k…” Nana quickly clasped her mouth shut as it dawned on her that she was probably speaking too much already.
“He did what?” Ruby grilled curiously, wondering why Nana suddenly paused.
“It’s nothing serious dear. But it’s best to avoid him, he can do something stupid” Nana advised sternly, she avoided him, and his grandfather did the same.
She always wanted to advise him that he should let go of the past, but since the day he almost strangled his last maid to death, because she wished him a happy birthday and baked him a cake.
Nana had made sure to avoid him.
“If it’s his mother’s death anniversary does it also mean…”
“Yes Ruby, it’s his birthday as well. But Jaxon hates birthdays, so don’t mention that to him…” Nana warned as everything finally dawned on Ruby.
His mother died when giving birth to him and that was also his birthday.
“Poor kid” Nana muttered.
“I remember he hated birthdays right from when he was little. Because he always blamed himself for his mother’s death and the fact that he suffered from a lot of abuse did not help matters at all” Nana breathed out sadly.
“Abuse?” Ruby’s eyes widened in surprise.
“Yes, abuse. His father also abused him because he felt that poor Jaxon was the cause of his lovely wife’s death. So he never gave Jaxon the love of a father and that has made him who he is today and even worse. He suffered in the hands of his father and never got to open up to anyone “Nana explained as Ruby slowly put all the pieces together.
“Oh my gosh, that’s so sad” she muttered. Now she knew why he had no compassion in him, he never got one to begin with.
She wondered how hard it must be for a kid.
“Yes, so take it easy with him today and just leave him alone. He’ll definitely come around tomorrow” Nana informed.
“Thank you so much for telling me this” Ruby breathed out in appreciation.
“You’re welcome, dear. No one will ever mention this. It’s only right if you know”
“Yeah thanks”
“Alright Ruby, take care. Good night” Nana wished as she soon disconnected the call after.
Ruby stared at her phone as her eyes traveled upstairs, she suddenly began to feel pity for Jaxon, it was never his fault. It was just the environment where he grew up in.
His father’s abuse must have left a permanent effect on him, that was why he would never be able to forgive himself, as he thought was that he killed his mother.
Nana’s warning kept ringing in Ruby’s head, telling her not to go to Jaxon.
But Ruby didn’t even know what prompted her to move her feet, as she found herself, walking to Jaxon’s room.
She arrived at his door as she placed her hand on the doorknob and opened the door slowly.
Her head kept screaming at her to back off but she didn’t even know what prompted her to peep through the small opening. And there she saw Jaxon, sitting on the floor, with his back rested against the edge of his bed, another bottle of drink in his hand.
