Chapter 27
“What are you doing??” Ruby shrieked as she suddenly pushed him away from her.
“Desperate for what exactly??” She couldn’t help but ask in surprise.
“To have sex with you?” She scoffed in disbelief.
“Think again” She added as Jaxon stared at her in disbelief.
That was what every single one of them wanted. They were nothing but desperate fools. He thought to himself.
“I’m out of here, excuse me” she uttered as she walked out of the office, leaving a speechless Jaxon.
Ruby left the company in anger and when she got outside, she realized that the driver had already left.
“Damn it! Who asked him to leave?” She smacked her lips as she ran her hands through her hair in anger.
The next alternative now was to use a taxi. Though going with the driver would be much better.
She stood for a long time, but no taxi had passed by yet.
She immediately guessed that it would be hard before she could find one around, so she decided to book an Uber.
She decided to cross to the other side of the road and wait for the Uber.
She was crossing the road and didn’t notice the incoming vehicle.
“Watch out!!” Someone yelled after her.
Ruby froze, her heart pounding in her chest. For a moment, time seemed to slow to a crawl as the world around her narrowed to a single point: the incoming car.
She could hear the screech of brakes, the sound of rubber against the pavement, and then, she was suddenly pushed away from the road.
“Arrh” She groaned in pain as she fell on the ground with a loud thud.
Someone had saved her.
Ruby blinked, her vision still blurry as she tried to make sense of what had happened.
But even through the haze, she could feel a presence, a steady hand gently touching her shoulder.
“Hey, hey, it’s okay,” a voice said, calm and familiar.
“You’re okay, you’re safe now. Just take it slow. Open your eyes, Ruby.”
Slowly, she obeyed, wincing as her eyes adjusted to the light.
And there, leaning over her, was Kevin, his eyes full of concern.
“Are you okay?” He asked again.
“Yes, yes, I’m fine” she stuttered as she quickly sat up from the ground, pushing him aside.
“Ow,” she winced feeling a pain in her left leg.
“Are you okay?” Kevin asked again as Ruby slowly nodded.
She almost got hit by a car, but she checked both sides of the road before crossing and she was very sure that there was no car approaching before she crossed.
“Yes, I’m fine” she answered in a low voice.
“You saved me,” She said softly. If not for Kevin, she would have been lying half-dead or even dead.
“Yes and thank God you’re fine. But I still need to take you to the hospital.” He proposed as he helped her stand up from the ground.
“Ouch” Ruby frowned her face, she had sprained her ankle.
“Thanks” she appreciated.
“But what are you doing here?” She asked curiously, was he following her? That he knew exactly when to save her?
“I was driving when I saw you waiting. I was coming to meet you when I saw the car approaching. Thank God I was fast enough” He smiled at her.
“Yeah, thanks”
“You should see a doctor” Kevin suggested.
“Thank you, but I have to go now” she refused, though she felt the need to see a doctor. Her leg was hurting her a lot.
“Where are you going to? It looks like you can’t walk. Come on Ruby. Hospital” Kevin persuaded as Ruby glanced at her leg.
She really needed to see a doctor but Jaxon…
On second thought, Ruby decided to follow Kevin to the hospital. Her health mattered a lot, why worry about a person as unappreciative as Jaxon?
“Okay sure” She finally accepted.
“Let’s go. I’ll help you” Kevin helped her walk to his car as he drove off.
….
“You have nothing to worry about, in three days, you’ll be able to take the bandage off” the doctor informed Ruby.
“Thanks” Ruby appreciated as she looked at her ankle which was covered in a bandage.
She was currently seated on a bed with Jaxon and the doctor present.
“You rub this ointment on it, it speeds up the healing process and I packed some pain relievers for you” She informed as she gave a small bag to Ruby who collected it from her.
“Thanks”
“You’re welcome. I’ll take my leave now” the doctor said before leaving the ward.
“Thanks so much, Kevin” Ruby thanked Kevin who was standing beside her.
“You’re welcome” he flashed a smile at her.
“Yeah,” She muttered as she shifted nervously on the bed.
“So where’s your husband?” Kevin suddenly asked as Ruby’s eyes flew open.
“I guessed you’ve seen the news” She chuckled sheepishly.
“He’s working” she replied.
“I’ll call him soon. He’ll come and pick me up from here” She added as that was what she was planning to do. That was if Jaxon would pick up.
“I see” Kevin mumbled to himself as he nodded meaningfully.
“I never could have imagined that you were married. I mean..” Kevin’s voice trailed off as he forced out a smile.
Just when he thought he was finally going to have a chance with Ruby, he saw the news of her marriage everywhere.
And to make matters worse she was married to the man he hated the most. Jaxon Vaughn.
“Yeah,” Ruby said.
“So you were already married when we went on that date” he reasoned. He remembered Jaxon walking into the restaurant and then Ruby started acting strange, followed by her leaving all of a sudden.
Now everything made sense to him.
“But why didn’t you tell me about it? I mean what’s there to hide, you could have just told me about your marriage with him. Why didn’t you mention it?” He bombarded a confused Ruby with questions.
“I…I.. I..” Ruby began to stammer, searching for the right answers.
“Because it wasn’t necessary for you to know” A voice suddenly sounded in the room as the doors flew open.
Ruby immediately knew who it was.
“Jaxon?” She gasped, her eyes wide in shock as she saw him standing proudly by the door, his charismatic Aura enveloping the whole room.
