“I wonder if my father would scold me for marrying you if he knew how unhappy I am now.”
Nelson felt as if a needle had pierced his heart.
He rejected this feeling, so he responded harshly, “I remember telling you earlier that our relationship is purely contractual. You helped me once, and I gave you the title of Mrs. Oconnor and good medical care for your father. It was a fair deal. What are you angry about now? You act all pure and innocent, but there’s no reason for me to stay faithful to you.”
Every word was like a dagger.
You act all pure and innocent, but there’s no reason for me to stay faithful to you.
Callie looked at him, trembling. She always knew he had a sharp tongue, but she hadn’t realized how cruel he could be when truly angry. His few harsh words shattered her last hope.
“Nelson!”
She heard him continue, “Just say what you want directly. There’s no need to make a scene.”
Nelson’s expression was icy, as if he saw through everything.
Callie closed her eyes tightly, trying not to faint.
She was such a fool to expect Nelson to show her mercy, to think that waiting a bit longer might change things.
Now she saw how naive that was.
His heart was as hard as stone and would never soften for her, even if it appeared to on the surface.
Callie struggled to catch her breath. “Nelson, I want to ask you for something. I don’t know if you’re willing to give it.”
Nelson sneered immediately, “What do you want?”
The words hovered on her lips. Callie opened and closed her mouth several times but couldn’t say them.
She had never dared to truly lose her temper with him. She feared that if she told him to leave, he would actually go. Knowing she wasn’t important, how could she dare to act out?
Nelson’s sneer deepened as he saw her hesitation. “What could be so important that it makes you this upset?”
Callie met his eyes and suddenly spoke, “The divorce agreement.”
So all this was about asking for the divorce agreement?
Callie watched as the smile froze on his face.
Despite her heartache, she felt a slight sense of satisfaction.
“Why?” His voice turned cold.
“Do you really need to ask why?” Callie stared at him, opening the document and handing him a pen. “I thought the great Mr. Oconnor wouldn’t care about getting divorced.”
Nelson didn’t take the pen, his chest heavy with emotion. “Is it because of Jaquan?”
“…” Callie forced the pen into his hand. “Sign it so I can move on with my life, Mr. Oconnor.”
It was as if they were already divorced, merely superior and subordinate now.
For a moment, Nelson truly felt they had become strangers again. But after everything they’d been through and their physical intimacy, how could they just be superior and subordinate?
“Is it because of Jaquan?” Nelson’s voice grew louder with anger.
“What do you think!” Callie slammed the document shut, standing up to him. “Yes, it’s because of Jaquan. I fell in love with him. I want to be with him. I want to marry him! Are you satisfied now!”
Why couldn’t he believe that there was nothing between her and Jaquan? He kept avoiding his own issues and couldn’t empathize with the pain she had endured.
