The phone connected, and Eli’s voice came through on the other end.
“Ethan, I need to ask you something,” Eli said.
“What is it, Eli?” Ethan responded.
“I just heard that your son got into some trouble. How’s he doing? Is everything alright?” Eli asked cautiously.
Ethan replied, “His arm was broken, but he’s doing much better now.”
“Why didn’t you go after the guy who did that to your son? I know your temper. How can you stay calm?” Eli asked, puzzled.
Ethan hesitated for a moment, wondering why this was being brought up again.
He sighed before saying, “To be honest, Eli, I gathered a group of men that very night to seek revenge. But before I could even leave the house, everyone I had gathered had died! They were all killed! Hundreds of them, slaughtered in one room, their blood splattered all over my walls. I’ve since moved out, and I’m still trying to sell that cursed place. Right, if you know anyone interested, let me know. I’m selling it cheaply.”
Ethan’s words made Eli’s eyes widen in shock, asking, “What happened exactly?”
“How would I know! There were a group of men in camouflage uniforms standing in the middle of my house. I was nearly scared out of my mind. The leader of the group warned me not to mess with a guy called Kayden. He said if I did, next time, it would be me and my entire family dead on the floor instead.” Ethan’s voice started to tremble as he recounted the experience.
“What did he look like?” Eli asked further.
Ethan was silent for a while, thinking back. “He had dark skin, and was very strong. I think he was from the military because not only him, but all his men, were dressed in camouflage uniforms. They must be from the same unit. But no military unit would dare to kill like that, so my guess was, they were mercenaries.”
“Mercenaries!” Eli repeated after him.
How had he not thought about that before? Yes, they must be mercenaries!
Was that live-in son-in-law of the Adams family that powerful? He was capable of hiring mercenaries?
But if he could, then Eli could certainly do the same.
At the thought of this, Eli kept asking, “But why haven’t I heard anything about such a big incident?”
“They must have suppressed the news. Anyway, I should go now,” With that, Ethan hang up abruptly.
“Boss, should we continue the investigation?” the man standing beside Eli asked.
Eli waved his hand dismissively and said with a frown, “Find out who his bodyguard is for me.”
“There’s no need for that.” A man’s voice suddenly sounded as soon as Eli said that.
Startled, he looked over to the source of the voice and saw a muscular man with dark skin dressed in a camouflage uniform standing at the doorway.
“Who are you?” the man beside Eli asked before Eli could say anything.
No sooner had he finished his sentence than a sharp crack sounded, followed by a dull thud of someone falling to the ground. He was knocked down by just a single punch.
Petrified by the scene, Eli stammered, trembling, “What… what do you want?”
Greedy Wolf didn’t respond. He simply stared at Eli coldly, making Eli break out in goosebumps.
“Why? Why are you here?” Eli felt completely tongue-tied, finding it hard to speak.
Greedy Wolf walked in slowly, sat down on the big sofa in Eli’s house, and asked casually, “Say, why are you investigating me? Is there something you want from me?”
Eli swallowed hard, standing up from his chair at once, and said nervously, “Eh, here’s the thing, bro. I want to hire you as my personal bodyguard. You just name your price, whatever you want!”
“Money?” Greedy Wolf laughed coldly and scoffed at that proposal.
Did he need any money?
Did Greedy Wolf, the Vice General of Seclela, need money?
No, money was the last thing he needed.
Would someone who had seen as much death as he had care about something as trivial as money?
Seeing the cold smile on Greedy Wolf’s face, Eli quickly said, “Whatever the Adams family’s live-in son-in-law is paying you, I’ll double it!”
Based on what Ethan had just said, Eli figured that the Adams family’s son-in-law was likely not very wealthy. The only reason he’d hired this guy was probably because he had offended several big shots in Hiphia and needed some protection.
This guy looked completely out of place next to the son-in-law of the Adams family. One had the look of a battle-hardened veteran, while the other looked like a frivolous pretty boy. Indeed, after three years, Kayden was becoming more and more like a good-for-nothing pretty boy.
The faint smile suddenly froze on Greedy Wolf’s face, and he asked coldly, “What did you just call the Defender of the South?”
A live-in son-in-law-what a degrading term! It carried so many negative connotations.
Eli was not a stupid person, he quickly smiled and flattered, “Bro, don’t get angry. I’ll give you ten million, just to show my respect to you. Let’s be friends, what do you say?”
As he spoke, Eli pulled out a check from his drawer and handed it to Greedy Wolf.
Greedy Wolf didn’t refuse and took the check from Eli’s hand.
When Eli saw him accepting the check, he knew there was room for negotiation. Money could really work wonders. The old saying ‘money can make the devil smile’ was no exaggeration.
Encouraged, Eli said to Greedy Wolf, “Whatever that guy is paying you, I’ll double it. Besides, he’s not really the Defender of the South. He’s just an impostor. Don’t waste your time with him. Come work for me instead.”
“Have you ever met the Defender of the South?” seeing the conversation had finally reached its point, Greedy Wolf took the opportunity and asked.
Eli nodded and said, “Of course, I’ve met him. We had dined together at the Robinson family’s place in Oriaville. He had an overwhelming presence. I’m not lying, bro, when he got off the plane, the entire airport was locked down. Countless big shots from Oriaville were there to greet him. I just happened to be in Oriaville that time and had witnessed the whole scene. That guy is nothing compared to the real the Defender of the South.”
Eli was so arrogant, but since he had provided this clue, Greedy Wolf stood up and said, “Let me give you some advice: be careful with your words and actions in the future. I’ll let you keep your head for now.”
With that, Greedy Wolf turned and walked out.
Eli’s heart sank as he called out, “Hey! Bro, we haven’t finished talking about our business!”
“What business?” Greedy Wolf asked coldly.
Eli replied, “How much do you charge per month? I’m okay with daily rates too. Just name your price!”
Greedy Wolf sneered, “You’re not worthy of hiring me.”
And then he left Eli’s villa without looking back.
Eli stood there, stunned. What did that mean? He lost his money without getting what he wanted?
