CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE
GOODBYE MR. LIAM TURNER
Alice’s POV
“Divorce papers.” His words kept resounding in my head, echoing with a finality that felt like a death knell. My blood began to boil as the realization sank in, and then I lost it.
“Coward! Cheater! I hate you!” I yelled out, my voice shaking with rage and pain. But he only ignored me.
“Now I know I was always right,” I continued, my voice rising. “Marrying you was the biggest mistake of my life. But falling in love with you? That was even more stupid.”
I stared at him, my vision blurred by the tears welling up in my eyes. “I loved you, Liam. I fucking loved a cold-hearted monster like you. I thought you were beginning to love and care for me, but you were only using me.”
His face remained impassive. “You think divorcing me would be the end of the world for me? No, you’re wrong. Thinking of the fact that you cheated on me makes my blood crawl and it makes me hate you more!”
“Shut the heck up or I’ll shut you up myself!” he shouted, banging his hand hard against his desk. The sound reverberated through the room, and I flinched involuntarily.
I took a deep breath, trying to steady myself. “You think you can intimidate me, Liam? You think you can silence me with your threats?”
He stepped closer, his eyes narrowing. “Watch your mouth, Alice. You don’t know what you’re getting yourself into.”
I squared my shoulders, refusing to back down. “I’m not afraid of you anymore, Liam. You can take your divorce papers and your threats and shove them.”
“The truth hurts, doesn’t it? But it won’t change the fact that you’re a cheater, a professional liar, an abuser, and a despicable man who doesn’t even come close to being a real man!. You’re nothing but a weakling!” I yelled out, my voice trembling with frustration and rage.
Liam suddenly spun around, and to my horror, he pointed a gun at me. My breath caught in my throat. When did he start keeping guns? His eyes darkened and before I could react, he pulled the trigger.
I instinctively covered my ears and ducked to the floor. Beads of sweat formed on my forehead as my body shook with fear. I could feel my bones, cells, and tissues panicking all at once. Liam almost killed me! If I hadn’t ducked in time, he would have shot a bullet right into my body. I would be lying on the floor, dead.
“Open your eyes,” I heard his deep baritone voice, so near and menacing. Slowly, I opened my eyes and saw two pairs of legs standing right in front of me. His legs moved backward, and then he squatted down to my level. I took my gaze to him and instantly regretted it.
His face was a mask of cold fury, it held no life in it. It seemed just as if I was staring at Kane.
I had always known him to be cold-hearted and arrogant, but his eyes right now held no warmth. It was almost as if I was staring at a complete stranger. He suddenly grasped my face, pressing his fingers down hard. Pain engulfed me, and I could feel my eyes swelling up with tears.
“You think you can just throw accusations at me and walk away?” He hissed.
I tried to steady my breathing, but it felt impossible. “You tried to kill me,” I whispered, the words barely audible over the pounding of my heart.
He laughed, a chilling sound that sent shivers down my spine. “Kill you? Oh, Alice, if I wanted you dead, you would be.”
I swallowed hard, fighting to keep my composure. “You’re a monster, Liam. I loved you, and this is what you’ve become.”
He grabbed my chin, forcing me to look into his eyes. “You think you’re so innocent? So pure? You’re just as flawed as I am.”
Tears streamed down my face, but I refused to let him see me break. “I may have flaws, but I never hurt you. I never betrayed you.”
His grip tightened, and I winced. “Betrayal is a matter of perspective, Alice. You never understood what I was going through.”
I pulled away from him, my anger flaring up again. “Don’t you dare make excuses! You cheated on me, you lied, and now you’ve tried to kill me. There’s no justification for any of it.”
“What if i did?. I can do anything I want” A grin spread across his lips and I felt disgusted.
“Since the feeling is mutual, why don’t you do us both a favor and sign the divorce papers?” He muttered softly but coldly.
My heart shattered into a million pieces at how unbothered he looked. Did our relationship really mean nothing to him?
“Li… am,” my voice shook with a mixture of fear and heartbreak. He suddenly pointed the gun right at my forehead.
“Utter another word and I swear, I would put a bullet into your skull,” he threatened coldly. I swallowed hard, feeling fear engulf me. I didn’t know how much to trust him, but judging by how serious he looked now, he would pull the trigger without thinking twice.
“Sign the document!” he yelled, making me flinch. Immediately, I grabbed the pen and flipped to the first page of the divorce papers. My hand trembled as I moved to the spot where I was meant to sign.
Every fiber of my being resisted the action. How had it come to this? Just a short time ago, we were in love, or so I thought. I looked up at Liam, hoping to see some flicker of the man I fell for, but his face was a cold, hard mask.
“Do it, Alice. End this charade,” He spat, his voice filled with disdain.
As the pen hovered over the paper, memories of our time together flooded my mind. The laughs, the dreams we shared, the promises we made. How could it all have been a lie? How could he have turned into someone I barely recognized?
“Liam, please,” I whispered, my voice cracking. “This isn’t you. We can work through this. We can find a way.”
He sneered, tightening his grip on the gun. “I said sign it!”
I couldn’t bring myself to end it all. He might have detested me, but I loved him, and I still did.
“I said sign it!” He pressed the gun to my forehead even more, and before I could stop myself, I signed the first page. Almost immediately, a tear slid down my cheek and dropped onto the paper, wetting it. I flipped through the next page and signed it as well, my tears almost soaking the paper.
Liam snatched the paper away from me as soon as he saw I was done and stepped away from me. He opened his secret safe and kept the document in it along with the gun.
“Now that all this is officially over and I’ve gotten what I want, get your sister and you both should get out of my house,” he said softly.
I had divorced him. He made me divorce him, and now he wanted me out of his life.
“I said get out of my house!” He yelled at me, his voice echoing through the room.
I stumbled back, my legs barely able to support me. I felt like I was in a nightmare, one that I couldn’t wake up from. The man I had loved with all my heart was now a stranger, a monster.
I got up on my feet and made for the door, but I suddenly stopped halfway, opening it. “I never cared about you being a beast, Liam, but with what you’ve done, I promise you will regret it. You will come begging for my forgiveness, but by then, it will be too late as I will never forgive you.” A tear slid down my cheek as I opened the door and stormed out.
