Callie shivered. In her mind, there was a clear boundary between officials and businessmen. She never imagined that Nelson had the power to shake such a significant position.
“So you weren’t actually going to give gifts, but to…” cause trouble, “Nash likes you. If he knew, he would hate you.”
Nelson got into the car, followed by Cora. He lowered his eyes and casually picked up the coat that had been set aside earlier, throwing it onto her lap. She was surprised and delighted.
“I can only assure you that if something happens, his days won’t be too hard,” Nelson said, switching his phone to the other hand. “Not sleeping yet?”
After talking with him, Callie suddenly felt that her matter tomorrow wasn’t such a big deal, and naturally, she wasn’t nervous anymore. “I’m going to sleep now. Nelson…”
The man waited for a while before hearing her continue, “Be safe.”
After she finished speaking, the call was immediately hung up. Nelson listened to the beeping sound from the other end, a faint smile appearing on his lips.
Cora stared at this smile, instinctively guessing who was on the other end of the call. Callie?
“Where is she?”
“Mrs. Blair has been waiting for a long time,” Cora quickly replied.
“Invite her up.”
The car door opened, and a woman with exquisite makeup got in. The first thing she saw was the coat covering Cora’s lap. She smiled at the man resting with his eyes closed. “Mr. Oconnor, you’re really kind to your assistant.”
Cora clutched the coat tightly and said coldly, “Get to the point.”
The woman’s way of speaking had a certain coarseness, likely a professional habit. “Given the current situation, I’m not sure I can stay out of it. If Mr. Oconnor can protect me, I will serve you loyally.”
Nelson never opened his eyes. He smelled her perfume and frowned slightly.
Cora’s tone was unfriendly, “After all this time training you, are you planning to bite back?”
“Cora, watch your mouth.”
“Why should I protect you?”
The man’s voice was cold, like winter snow, chilling to the bone.
Mrs. Blair stared at his stunning face, her hand slithering up from her leg like a water snake. “I have a list of Larry’s private dealings over the years, including Deshawn. Would this be enough to interest you, Mr. Oconnor?”
Cora glared at her hand.
Nelson still didn’t open his eyes. He used his leg to fling her hand away. “Where’s the list?”
Mrs. Blair’s hand trembled. She had been through many challenges over the years but could never win over this man. “That kind of thing can’t be carried around casually. Here’s part of a video. Would Mr. Oconnor like to take a look?”
He remained still. Cora understood and took it, glancing at it briefly before saying, “Mr. Oconnor, it’s real.”
Nelson slowly lifted his eyelids and finally looked directly at Mrs. Blair. She had dressed up specially today, wearing a tight-fitting dress with a revealing neckline. He glanced at her once before looking away.
“What do you want?”
“Twenty million dollars and freedom.”
“I’ll add another ten million if you report it under your real name. Once it’s done, I’ll ensure you can step down safely.” Nelson’s tone was always indifferent but carried significant weight.
Mrs. Blair wavered at the number. “How do I know you’ll protect me when the time comes?”
Cora spoke up then, “Use your brain for once. If we don’t protect you, what if you turn against Oconnor Group while you’re inside?”
Upon hearing this, she realized, “But… Larry Blair has been cautious lately; he doesn’t even let me into his study.”
