“If I make a move and get caught, what then? He’s ruthless. I’ve been beaten many times. If he decides to kill me, I’ll be lucky to survive.”
Larry Blair had always been authoritative, even in those matters between men. But since that part of him didn’t work, he sought thrills elsewhere. She had endured much hardship to rise to her position over the years; surviving wasn’t easy.
It was late autumn, and the wind outside was fierce. Tomorrow should be a good day. Nelson rested his head on one hand, tapping the other hand idly. “In the next couple of days, someone new will replace you. Step down accordingly.”
Mrs. Blair was pleased to hear this. “Really?”
Nelson finally looked at her directly. “Your son is still in Ylosea. Weigh the importance of things carefully and don’t do anything you shouldn’t.”
Mrs. Blair’s smile froze, and she felt a new level of fear toward this man.
“Years ago, I knelt before Mr. Oconnor, begging for a way out. I understand the stakes.” In their line of work, it was inevitable to fall into traps set by shrewd people. She had, not even knowing whose child she was carrying. Business was impossible; she was at a dead end.
Nelson gave her a job and took her child, ensuring she wouldn’t betray him by placing her close to a top position as a potential pawn.
Mrs. Blair got out of the car, and the driver started the engine. Nelson lit a cigarette and said to Cora beside him, “My assistant doesn’t need to be too pretty. Don’t wear such clothes for work in the future.”
Cora opened her mouth awkwardly, realizing that the coat wasn’t for her comfort but because he didn’t want to see it.
“I understand, Mr. Oconnor.” Her eyes were filled with embarrassment and grievance.
Early the next morning, Callie woke up early and massaged Reuben’s body while muttering, “Dad, I have a very important meeting today. Please help me get through it smoothly. I’ll come back to see you after it’s over.”
Tobias came in for rounds and saw Callie hurriedly packing her things. He glanced at the time. “It’s still early. Why are you in such a rush?”
“Tobias, I have a meeting today. I need to get there early just in case.” She then rushed off.
Jeffery was already waiting downstairs. Callie got into the car and said, “Jeffery, drive steadily. I need to put on some makeup.”
Jeffery was surprised. “Can you do makeup in the car?”
“You don’t get it; it’s a must-have skill for every career woman.”
Callie said playfully, then applied a precise and appropriate makeup look for the meeting.
However, there was no need to drive steadily because they got stuck in traffic.
Callie was anxious. “Why is there traffic? This road is usually clear.”
Jeffery went ahead to find out and came back saying, “Ma’am, there’s been an accident up ahead. The police are handling it.”
“Is it serious?” Callie felt uneasy as they were still some distance from Oconnor Group.
“I saw blood on the ground.”
An accident involving blood wouldn’t be resolved quickly. Callie waited anxiously in the car, constantly checking the time.
It was almost time for the meeting, and she hadn’t prepared properly. If she arrived late today, it would be disastrous.
After thinking it over, Callie grabbed her bag. “I’ll ride a shared bike there. Jeffery, you don’t need to worry about me.”
Jeffery wanted to follow but couldn’t leave the car behind. He called after her, “Ma’am, how am I supposed to explain this? Be careful!”
