In the spacious office, sunlight poured onto the floor, making it slightly warm.
Cora sat at the reception table, focused on pouring coffee. “Mr. Oconnor, Vankey hasn’t made any moves. It seems they’ve been intimidated by you, and Deshawn doesn’t dare to act rashly.”
“It’s different now. Jaquan is back, and things might change,” Nelson said nonchalantly, holding a cigarette between his slender fingers and sniffing it.
Cora paused in her coffee-pouring motion. “Jaquan just returned last night. Have you seen him?”
“Yes, at the Kenker Hotel,” Nelson replied without hiding anything.
Cora nodded, feeling a mix of emotions. Recently, Nelson hadn’t taken her to many events that required an assistant. She didn’t know what he was doing at the Kenker Hotel last night or who he was with.
Nelson took a sip of his cappuccino latte, frowning slightly as if it wasn’t as good as last night’s.
Cora noticed his frown and quickly asked, “What’s wrong?”
Nelson didn’t answer directly. He put down the cup and asked, “How did Jaquan handle the project in Ylosea?”
“He paid to keep it quiet. In this era, as long as you pay enough, no one will talk.”
“What about public opinion?”
“It’s been suppressed. There are many such incidents every year. Just pick an explosive piece of news to overshadow it.”
“How is the progress on the Splendor Estate land?” Nelson lit the cigarette he had been holding and took a shallow puff.
“Everything is arranged behind the scenes. We just need to go through the bidding process, and it will fall to Oconnor Group,” Cora answered, her eyes falling on the cup he had only sipped once.
Nelson acknowledged with a hum and didn’t ask further.
Cora observed his expression. “Mr. Oconnor, the price set for acquiring Splendor Estate is quite high. If Vankey makes a move, Oconnor Group’s cash flow might be tight.”
“No matter. It’s just for practice.”
Cora didn’t understand what kind of practice Splendor Estate was for. It was a large piece of real estate surrounded by schools.
Nelson extinguished his half-smoked cigarette in the ashtray and stood up, grabbing his coat. “My driver is on leave today. You drive me.”
Cora was delighted and immediately followed, ignoring her confusion.
Nelson rarely drove himself. With too much on his mind, he couldn’t concentrate and might even get into accidents if he drove the car. The few times he did drive were because of Callie.
In the silent parking lot, Nelson, dressed in a suit, walked quickly with his long legs. Cora, in high heels, almost had to jog to keep up.
She pressed the key, unlocking the car.
At that moment, a bulky figure stumbled out from behind the car and fell directly in front of Nelson. He frowned and took a step back.
It was a middle-aged woman with a wrinkled face and a flattering smile. “You must be Mr. Oconnor?”
Cora hurriedly stepped in front of Nelson. “Who are you? How rude!”
The woman’s clothes were cheap and low-class.
Yamilet ignored Cora and stared at the distinguished man behind her. She had to admit, he was indeed exceptional.
“Mr. Oconnor, I am Callie’s mother!”
Cora stiffened and frowned deeply.
Nelson’s deep voice came from above her head. “You can leave now.”
“Mr. Oconnor! This…”
“Didn’t you understand?” Nelson’s tone grew heavier.
Cora had no choice but to hand over the car keys reluctantly and leave, looking back repeatedly.
Seeing this, Yamilet felt more confident.
