A few beams of streetlight filtered through the car window, illuminating the man’s charming face.
It was Jaquan. He leaned his elbow on the car window, first scrutinizing the woman behind Nelson, and spoke playfully, “What a coincidence to meet you here, Miss.”
Callie was a beat slow but still caught his gaze. She felt a chill down her spine, puzzled as to why he always stared at her. “Mr. Scott, indeed a coincidence.”
Nelson stood with his hands behind his back, looking somewhat superior from this angle. “You came to Kenker Hotel as soon as you returned to Ylosea. Jaquan, you’re giving me quite the honor.”
Jaquan chuckled softly, a hint of anger barely noticeable. “The news of you risking everything for a beauty has spread throughout our circle. Of course, I had to come and show my support.”
Callie cautiously observed their expressions. She thought Nelson would handle it, but had it really spread? Would she now become a target?
Nelson’s emotions were hard to read, as if he didn’t care. “Jaquan, do you believe in rumors?”
“I don’t, but today is quite the coincidence. Miss Callie standing behind you is very eye-catching.” Jaquan smiled and said to Callie, “Are you here to report work today as well?”
Callie looked at him. “I’m here to assist Mr. Oconnor with work.”
Jaquan seemed like a playboy with no airs, but such people could be more dangerous. While smiling, he was already calculating.
“Have you heard the saying ‘The hero is ensnared by beauty’?”
Callie didn’t understand. “No, women generally aren’t interested in men’s heroism.”
Jaquan chuckled more playfully. “Miss Callie, you are very fortunate.”
With that, he leaned back, the car window rolled up, and the Cayenne sped away, leaving only exhaust fumes.
Callie felt uneasy and asked Nelson in front of her, “What did he mean?”
Because of the backlight, she couldn’t see his expression clearly, only half of his smooth jawline with a hint of mockery.
“Ignore him.” Nelson walked towards the parked car.
Callie thought something was wrong and quickly caught up. “Do many people know you saved me at Club Paradise?”
“Not many.” Those who knew were very important people; indeed, not many.
“Will it affect you? Do they know it was me?”
“No, they don’t.”
Callie breathed a sigh of relief. She was actually more concerned about whether it would affect her. If people at Oconnor Group knew she had a relationship with Nelson, it would be hard to continue her job.
Nelson saw her relieved expression and stopped walking, raising an eyebrow. “You seem very happy.”
Callie clung to the car door, her eyes darting around, trying to change the subject to ease the current awkward atmosphere.
But she didn’t know what to say.
Callie was at a loss for words.
From Kenker Hotel to Paucaster Villa Complex, they didn’t say a word. Her expression was tense, a posture of defense and resistance.
All the way, Callie replayed Jaquan’s words in her mind but couldn’t figure out what he was plotting.
