Back in her room, Callie was now fully awake, though her head still throbbed slightly.
She rubbed her temples, trying to piece together the previous night’s events. She remembered going to a party with Mr. Montes and drinking a lot…
Her headache was the least of her concerns.
How did she end up here?
How did she get back?
She glanced down at her clothes, relieved to find them still on.
But how had she returned?
Callie strained to recall, but her memory was blank. Eventually, she gave up and collapsed onto her bed, quickly drifting into a deep sleep.
The next morning, a soft rapping came from the door.
“Miss Marsh, I’ve prepared some chicken soup for you. Please get up and have some.”
By now, Callie was completely sober. She hurried out of bed, slipped on her slippers, and opened the door.
“Nancy, good morning!”
Nancy smiled warmly and handed her the soup. “Miss Marsh, drink this while it’s hot.”
The sight of the chicken soup filled Callie with warmth.
“Thank you, Nancy!”
She took the soup and began drinking it in large gulps. After finishing, she asked, “Nancy, I drank too much last night and don’t remember much. How did I get back?”
Nancy’s smile widened at her question.
“Mr. Oconnor brought you home.”
Callie’s eyes widened in shock.
“What? Nelson brought me back?”
How could that be possible? What on earth had happened?
“Miss Marsh, I know it’s not my place to say, but alcohol isn’t good for you. You should drink less in the future and avoid getting so drunk.”
Callie scratched her head and nodded. “Thank you, Nancy, I’ll remember that.”
Nancy was satisfied with Callie, so she gave Callie advice.
After Nancy left, Callie paced around her room, eager to understand what had happened the previous night. Why had Nelson brought her back? Did anything happen between them?
These questions plagued Callie even as she arrived at the office, still without answers.
Furthermore, the office atmosphere seemed off today.
“Did you hear? Mr. Montes resigned,” Litzy whispered as she approached.
Callie’s movements halted instantly. She looked up, confusion written on her face. “What did you say? Mr. Montes resigned?”
Litzy nodded.
“He came in early this morning to handle his resignation. No one knows why…”
A sense of unease struck Callie. She thought Mr. Montes’ resignation was strange.
“Anyway, our design department can finally move forward. Things should get much better from now on.” Litzy seemed relieved.
Callie took a deep breath. “Hopefully, this is the start of a new chapter for the design department.”
Just as she finished speaking, the sharp sound of high heels echoed through the office. Lorelai approached, her face dark, and when her eyes met Callie’s, there was a noticeable flicker of emotions.
Callie met Lorelai’s gaze without fear. Normally, Lorelai would start a battle, but today, she said nothing and went straight to her desk.
“Lorelai, what’s going on? How is Callie still coming to work as usual?” A colleague gossiped with Lorelai in the break room. Lorelai frowned, recalling a phone call from her brother. He told her not to bother him with it anymore and hung up.
She felt frustrated that her brother not only failed to teach Callie a lesson but also was ignoring her.
