ARGON
I’m going to stay with Brielle until she’s awake. I don’t see any other peaceful place to be in at the moment, except for her room.
All through the night, I stayed with Brielle, watching over her weak body, as she laid there unconscious.
The nurse had tried to send me out, so she’d stay and watch her, but I refused to do as she wanted, remaining in my seat.
“But… Alpha Sir… Doctor Nicole said…”
“If you’re scared of what Doctor Nicole would say to you, then sorry I’m not leaving. You can tell her that Alpha Argon has chosen to spend the night here, ” I said, passing my message to the worried nurse.
She didn’t look pleased with the response, but left to pass it down to Nicole. I had my head falling right next to Brielle, taking her hand in my hold just to give her warmth. Her fingers were cold.
“Come on, Brielle. I promise to stop pestering you if you wake up. I won’t meddle in your private life any more. Just wake up, please,” I pleaded, stroking her hand in mine while staring at her face.
I stayed in that position for some time and didn’t even know when I dozed off. I only woke up to the sound of two people talking in the room. They were whispering from behind, yet my wolf ears could still pick their chit-chat.
“You should have used your phone to call than running down to my office. Leaving the patient alone with someone else isn’t safe!”
I recognized that voice as Doctor Nicole’s. And what does she mean by someone else? I am no stranger to her or to Brielle.
I could hear the nurse apologizing for doing so. “I won’t repeat this, I promise.”
“You better. Now go and get me an extra blanket. We can’t disturb him now that he’s asleep,” She instructed the nurse.
I heard the footsteps leaving the room, while anothet came closer to my point. I stayed quiet and tried to pretend to be asleep.
“You can sit up, Alpha. I know you’re awake.”
Stunned, I opened my eyes and found Doctor Nicole looking at me, with her brow levitating at me with a smirk, crossing her arms against her chest.
Lifting my head slowly, I asked, “How did you know I was…”
“I noticed when you woke up. Your body had flinched at the sound of my voice,” She revealed, walking towards Brielle to check up on her.
“I told you not to mind about her, Alpha. We have nurses that are ready to look after the patient.”
“Is it a crime to stay and watch over Brielle?” I asked, displeased with her behavior.
She scoffed at me and answered, ” In my case, it’s a big crime. You already have another woman, yet you’re sitting beside your ex-wife. How will your wife feel if she wakes up to learn her husband has been by another woman’s side?”
“We’re not married,” I corrected immediately, trying to subdue the anger that was slowly rising within me. “Estelle and I didn’t get married because of Brielle. She had stormed in to save her from the poison,” I explained.
Doctor Nicole hummed at my words, glancing down at something then at my face. “I heard. The press had taken up the news in a flash. THE WEDDING OF THE NIGHT. HASHTAG POISONED BRIDE AND SUPER EX. Those newscasters sure know how to come up with thrilling titles,” She laughed, mocking the case.
I didn’t mind but took my attentions off her.
That’s when her mood changed towards me in an instant. She was upset about something I did. “I appreciate the fact that you decided to stay with Brielle instead of your girlfriend, but did you have to deliver the tragic news to her father like that?”
Tragic news meant the dead fetus that once lived in Estelle.
“I wanted to break the news in a calm way, but you sent your beta to do the work, and Alpha Deron came storming into my office, calling me a liar! I do not appreciate that.”
“What? You told me and I passed it down to him. I didn’t do anything wrong. He needs to know his grandchild’s rent has expired,” I shrugged, smirking at this. But she still wasn’t pleased with my action.
“I know why you did it, Alpha. You wanted to express your anger out, that’s why you sent your beta to do the work.”
“That’s not how one expresses his or her anger, Doctor! If I had wanted to, I would have stormed down to that room if that woman was awake, and delivered the news in a well-deserving manner!” I sparked out, but immediately reduced my voice for Brielle’s sake.
Tightening my hand, I said , ” I never had any plans to be with that baby, but Brielle was the one who pushed me into considering the little one. I did so and grew so attached to it, and now…” I sighed, covering my face in pains. “The baby is gone.”
Suddenly, I heard Doctor Nicole scoffing at me. I lowered my hands from my face and saw her swaying her head at what I had said. “Oh, that sounds so funny.”
“Funny? You’re a doctor for crying out loud. Aren’t you supposed to be supportive?” I questioned her behavior. But her response left me silent.
Doctor Nicole narrowed her brow at me, delivering a nasty glare. “Supportive? Where you supportive to Brielle when she lost her baby?”
My heart skipped at her words, freezing me in my spot.
“You can’t expect me to be smile with a man who had no iota of love towards his first child that he took with his own hands. His first heir for heaven’s sake!” She pointed out, leaving me shun.
“My laughter might have felt offensive to you, but it’s actually hilarious to me, because you are talking about a child that you didn’t have any plans to father, but only agreed to care for it after Brielle told you to. Isn’t that funny? ” She smiled sarcastically.
“The love and care you wanted from your girlfriend was given to you then by your ex-wife. She endured all your abuses and still stood by your side to give you the life you always wanted.” She drew closer to Brielle’s head, slowly stroking her hair.
Her face came all dull as she closed her eyes tightly and said, “Gosh! I still remember that terrible day when she woke up to learn her baby was gone. She cried bitterly. I felt so hurt.”
A cold shiver ran down my spine in an instant, just by listening to Doctor Nicole, explaining and describing how Brielle had cried over our baby’s death. The same child I joined hands with Estelle in taking.
“That woman lost her own child in your hands, but yet she supported your girlfriend by advising you to take her own child. Now, what has your darling girlfriend given to you in return, Alpha? What? ” She questioned, dimming her eyes at me.
Silent, that’s how I was, looking at Nicole’s face.
“I believe you know the answer to that already, because no man, after seeing all these drama from A to Z, would still look at it and shut his eyes to the truth!”
She was right. No man would close his eyes after all of these.
Soon, the nurse arrived with the blanket, ending the conversation. She was surprised to meet me awake. Doctor Nicole instructed her to hand the blanket over to me, saying, “I thought you’d need it, since you’ve decided to spend the night here. But if you feel like going over to your girlfriend… ”
“No, I’m okay here, ” I said, tightening my left hand, only to realize that I’ve been holding Brielle’s hand all these while.
When I glanced at it then at Doctor Nicole, I noticed how she smiled with delight. That means she saw it all along but didn’t say a word.
“Alright then. You can stay here. But if there’s anything you need, you can talk to the nurse. I’ll be in my office if you need me also,” She said, taking her leave.
“I’ll be back, please,” The nurse had pleaded, leaving the room immediately.
Alone with Brielle again, I directed my attention on her and thought of the day Estelle and I saw the pregnancy report in her hand. That was on the day of our wedding anniversary.
It was clear she wanted to share the good news with me but stopped on seeing Estelle and I together in the room.
But what did I do? To satisfy my petrified lover, I joined hands in pushing Brielle down the stairs, ending my baby’s life.
My… My first heir.
And now, this baby is also gone. It’s life was taken by its own mother! She took its life before the wedding!
“After forcing me to love the child, you took its life? For what?! Why?!” I groaned in anger, bittered over the truth.
If not for Doctor Nicole who had carried out Estelle’s treatment, I would have blamed the poison and assumed it took the baby’s life. But no, the poison didn’t just try to end Estelle’s life, but exposed the truth to me.
“You have a lot of explaining to do, Estelle. A lot.”
