ARGON
I had a choice to make. It’s either Estelle or Brielle.
Doctor Nicole feels it’s best I stay with Estelle than Brielle, because she thinks I’d repeat what I did the last time she was admitted here.
But that was then, not now. I no longer hold such hatred towards Brielle. Everything is different and… And I wish to be there by her side.
“She’s all alone. I need to see her,” I decided, taking the right path which led down to Brielle’s room.
Every step I took reminded me of all the things she has done for me, despite the differences between us.
She was there when I was broke. She was there when the whole world turned against me. She revived my reputation, my company, my name… Despite my troubles, she still went ahead with this wedding and even risked her own life in saving Estelle’s.
I can’t leave her all by herself in this condition. I rather stay with Brielle than with Estelle. At least she has her father and Jerome to look after her. But Brielle has no one.
I arrived at the room and found three nurses attending to an unconscious Brielle. I had to stand at the door, watching how they tucked her into bed before making their exit.
Two of the nurses left, while one stayed behind. The nurse pulled a chair closer to Brielle and asked when she spotted me, “Are you here for the patient?”
“Um… Yes,” I responded, stepping into the room fully.
The nurse gave me her seat, excusing herself from the room. “Please Sir, I’ll be back,” She excused, leaving the room.
Now I was all alone with Brielle. I stared at her face, wishing for her to open her eyes and perhaps say something to me.
The room was just quiet, making me uncomfortable and lonely.
Dropping my gaze on Brielle, a smile crept across my face when I remembered how she always responds cruelly to some things I tell her.
“You know, I sometimes frown when you start with your sarcasm, or when you feel like annoying me with all those nasty words you pour out of your mouth. ” I chuckled, thinking of the time she called me a farmer.
“They either make me laugh or get on my nerves. Sometimes I wished you could stay shut and be like your old weak self. But now, I… I don’t want you to stay quiet.”
I slowly reached for her hand, holding it in mine. “At this moment, any sound you make would be enough to ease this guilt dwelling in me. I can’t help but feel bad for what you’re going through. And you’re facing all these just by being around me, ” I sighed, lowering my head down.
“Even Doctor Nicole’s advise sounded like she was talking to a monster, ” I chuckled at myself. “And I know if you had heard what she said, you’d have added to it.” I laughed, knowing what Brielle can do.
But on looking at her face, I felt dull. No sign of movement. Just silence.
This ached my heart deeply, as I tightened her hand in my hold and pleaded with her, “Please, just get better soon. I… I don’t know how long I’d be able to hold this guilt. It’s eating me up. Please wake up, Brielle.”
I placed my forehead on our hands, struggling to ease the bitterness in me. That’s when the nurse arrived with my beta, Jerome. He has been looking for me and had to ask around, until he was told I was here with Brielle.
“I thought you left. I was about to call your phone but learnt you where here,” He narrated, standing beside me.
I didn’t say anything to him but faced Brielle. He stood there quietly, but soon broke the silence by talking about Estelle. “Good news. Estelle called out to you, Alpha. She’s still unconscious, yet your name was the first thing she mentioned in her state. I think you should check up on her.”
“Hmm. That’d be later, ” I said, keeping my focus on Brielle, waiting patiently for a sign or even a twitch.
But Jerome kept insisting that I see Estelle, believing it will improve her health. “For a pregnant woman, I think it’s best if her partner is close by. That way both mother and baby can…”
“Enough!” I shunned Jerome at once, leaving him and the nurse startled. “If you care about her well being so much, why are you here?!” I sparked, almost losing my temper.
The nurse had to hush out, telling me not to disturb Brielle. “Please, this is a hospital. If you want to discuss anything, you can do it outside, but not close to the patient,” She instructed.
On hearing this, I got to my feet and dragged Jerome out the room. I took him to a corner of the hospital and said, “You and Alpha Deron are with Estelle already. Why must I come and watch over her?”
My Beta tried to sound calm and convincing, giving me unnecessary reasons why I should be with Estelle.
“Alpha, I know you’re feeling down a d frustrated at the moment. But think from the point of a future father and a husband. Your wife and baby needs your care so as to get better. It’s not just important for them but also for…”
“JEROME!!” I grabbed his collar, slamming him to the wall. His eyes came bulging out in fear. He wasn’t expecting me to react like this.
“Everytime Baby! Baby!! Baby!!! Baby this, Baby that… What baby?!” I questioned. “What baby, Jerome? Is it the one that’s already dead or what?!”
“Dead?!” He gasped out in disbelief, staring at me in shock.
I pushed Jerome back from my point, wiping my face with my palms, so as to ease my rage.
“The baby is dead? Oh Goddess! This… This is so sad. Poor Estelle,” He sympathized on her behalf, showing his concern.
“Does Alpha Deron know? Has he been told?”
“Are you asking me? Do I look like the doctor? ” I questioned, lifting my brow at my Beta.
“Alpha, please relax. I know you’re upset over this news. It’s heartbreaking indeed, ” He said, drawing nearer to comfort me. But I shoved his hands away, showing no care for his support.
“Take that sympathy to Alpha Deron. Let him know that his grandchild is gone.”
“Me? But how can I break the news to him? Aren’t you coming?”
“No, ” I said, turning my back at my beta and heading for Brielle’s room.
He can do the talking since he’s looking after Estelle. But I’m staying here with Brielle, until she wakes.
