Jamie was still reeling from Old Mrs. Adams’ scolding when she said, “What exactly did you do to offend Mr. Robinson? He just called me, yelling about how the company’s head has to be changed, or the contract will be void!”
“Grandma, I didn’t do anything!” Jamie protested. “Besides, the contract is already signed. How can it just be voided? There are legal responsibilities involved.”
Old Mrs. Adams huffed, “Atkinson Group is so powerful. Do you really think they’d find it difficult to void a contract? If they wanted the Adams family to disappear from Hiphia, it would be as well simple!”
“What should we do now, Grandma?” Jamie’s voice wavered with desperation.
“What to do?” Old Mrs. Adams snapped. “Get Georgia! Mr. Robinson only deals with Georgia.”
“Georgia, again with Georgia!” Jamie gritted his teeth. “She must have given Beckett some benefits. Who knows how many times she’s slept with him.”
“Shameless!” Old Mrs. Adams shouted before hanging up the phone.
…
In the afternoon, Scarlett came home and saw Kayden and Georgia having a meal. Her expression changed, and a barrage of harsh words followed.
By now, Kayden and Georgia were used to it and didn’t respond.
After a while, Scarlett seemed to remember something and asked, “Georgia, whose new car is that outside?”
Georgia glanced at Kayden and said, “It’s mine!”
Scarlett’s eyes widened with astonishment. “How is that possible? That car looks like a Mercedes, and it must cost millions of dollars!”
Though Scarlett didn’t know it was a Mercedes-Maybach, she understood it wasn’t cheap.
Georgia replied, “Three million dollars.”
Scarlett nearly spat out her water since she was drinking. Three million was astronomical for her family. The Adams family had money, but Georgia’s family didn’t. A neglected family wouldn’t have that kind of money.
“Three million!” Scarlett held up three fingers, her expression exaggerated. “Did Tony give it to you?”
Georgia shook her head. “No, it was from Kayden!”
There was a hint of pride in Georgia’s voice. At least she could assert that her husband had given her something impressive, even in front of her mother.
Scarlett looked at Kayden with disbelief. Noting his outfit, which looked like it cost less than two hundred dollars, she shook her head. “How could that be? Georgia, I told you…”
Before she could finish, the doorbell rang. Scarlett called out, “I’m coming!”
She went to open the door and saw a woman of similar age walking in. The woman had curly hair, was dressed in a patterned dress, and wore sandals. Though of similar age, she looked well-maintained, with smooth skin and a robust appearance.
“Oh, you’re here, Rosa!”
The woman responded with a nod and then made a face of disdain. “Scarlett, why are you still living in such a place?”
She shook her head in exasperation and sat on the sofa. This woman was an old friend of Scarlett’s. They were close when Scarlett’s family was influential, but they lost touch after Georgia’s grandfather passed away. The only reason she was here now was that she heard about the news about the engagement of Scarlett’s daughter.
As she sat down, she crossed her legs and clicked her tongue. “Scarlett, aren’t you connected to Bobby’s family now? How come you’re still in such a place? I heard they gave you a villa.”
Scarlett replied with a wry smile, “Yes, but we haven’t had a chance to move yet.”
“Ha!” The woman shook her head. “It’s not that you haven’t moved, but that you’re lying to us!”
“Isn’t your foolish son-in-law at home?” The woman’s gaze shifted to Kayden, who was sitting at the kitchen table.
Scarlett said, “Oh, he’s about to leave.”
“Ah! I hope your daughter can marry into a wealthy family too. Then you can enjoy life like me.” The woman removed a diamond ring from her finger and said proudly, “This is a diamond ring my son-in-law gave me. It’s worth over a million dollars!”
Scarlett stared at the sparkling ring and said, “It’s so small. Over a million dollars?”
“Indeed!” The woman looked at the ring and added, “You’re just not familiar with this. The smaller the diamond, the more valuable it is. This is a special kind of diamond. There’s also a red diamond, called a blood diamond, which is even more valuable. I heard one can sell for ten million dollars!”
“Ten million dollars!” Scarlett’s face was full of envy. “I wish I could have one.”
The woman laughed. “It’s simple. As long as your daughter marries Bobby’s son, not just ten million dollars, even a hundred million dollars is nothing to them!”
While they were chatting, Kayden took out his phone and dialed a number. “Hello, Jerome? Do you have any blood diamond rings? If so, bring one over. I want to give it to my mother-in-law. I’ll send you the address.”
After sending the address, Kayden hung up.
The two women were stunned, staring at Kayden in shock.
The woman asked, “Is your foolish son-in-law still ill? Why is he calling Jerome?”
Scarlett glared at Kayden, her anger barely contained. “He’s better but has developed delusions.”
“Ha! He’s playing the role so convincingly. If I didn’t know he’s a fool, I’d believe it.”
Georgia had been about to say something but, remembering Kayden’s recent behavior, decided to keep quiet.
“By the way, Leah asked me to pick her up, so I’m leaving now.” Georgia told Scarlett and then said to Kayden, “Let’s go, Kayden! Come with me.”
Kayden nodded in agreement, and they left together.
Just five minutes after they left, the doorbell rang at Scarlett’s house.
Scarlett went to open the door and found three people standing outside. The were two bodyguard-like figures and an elderly man in traditional attire. The elderly man was none other than Jerome.
He looked at Scarlett and asked, “I’m Jerome. Are you Mr. Scott’s mother-in-law?”
