“What are you doing awake by this time?” Cade asked. This was a way of him defending himself. He did not expect that he would be seeing her awake by that time. He had come home late even though it had not been intentional at all.
“Did you expect me to be sleeping? Is that why you were tiptoeing around me?” she asked leaving the shadow and coming into the only small light that illuminated the entire path.
“Yes I did expect you to be sleeping considering the time”
“Well I could not sleep” she replied yawning. “And you want to know why?” she asked crossing her hand across her body as a belt to hold in place her robe.
“Did I wake you?”
“Of course but you kept me awake,” she said tilting her head again. She began to feel as though titling of her head was fast becoming a habit of hers.
“I kept you awake?”
“Yes you did” she said walking to him and stopping till the light shining was enough to illuminate his face. “I was so worried when you left the airport as if you were half gone from the earth. At first, I was angry that you just decided to take off because of work but when I analysed the situation I realized that you had been absentminded since the first night when we got there, it seemed like something huge happened” she stopped to take a deep breath.
Cade looked at her to know if she was still talking and he decided to listen. “And then I became angry because I felt that if it was not because of work that you were leaving then you should have at least told me why. I tried to probe you the entire trip but all I got were short-ended annoying answers” she finished emphasizing the word annoying to show him how much she did not like what he did.
“Something came up”
“Which was what you kept saying for fifteen entre days,” she said before he could finish speaking.
“What happened?” she asked and he shook his head dismissing her. “I think I have the right to know, we are a team remember?” she asked him.
He took a deep breath and ran his hands across his face in annoyance. “Well if I have to tell you then I guess I might as well say it”
Ophelia tried to understand what he meant but could not seem to find headway in his statement. “You have to tell me, otherwise I would spend the next week thinking you are angry at me for something I might even have no connection to,” she said pressing her lips together. “And who knows I might know a way to solve the problem.
Cade knew she was right, his acting so absentminded was going to make her feel uncomfortable even though this was not about her. However, telling her might help him and even solve the problem faster than he thinks.
“About two years ago when I returned to the city I worked for nine months before getting promoted to become the CEO of one of the subsidiaries” Ophelia wanted him to talk quickly because it was late and she was sleepy but there was no way she could tell him that since he was opening up to her how could she shut him down.
“And after the party I began to receive text messages like this” he added bringing out his phone and giving it to her to read the messages that he had newly received.
She looked at the messages in horror, mouth ajar as she wondered why someone would send such terrifying messages to another person and even under a personal number as well. “So what did the police say?” she assumed that he must have gone to the station for something as creepy as this.
“Well, at first they said I should wait it out since it was from a private number that it might be an error and the person would stop. Quite right the person stopped but continued after a few months and then I had to change my number and it stopped. Since then I have not received a message until after we got married”
“Why that why you were so distracted while we were on the trip” she asked and he nodded. “Okay then tomorrow I will call my dad and get him to call the commissioner of police so we can get to the end of it” Ophelia said getting worked up.
“I already asked to speak to the IG of the police,” Cade said.
“When we find the person I am going to make sure they pay for this greatly” she said fisting her hand into a ball.
“I am okay” Cade said holding her hand. She felt her hand was formed into a ball relax into his.
“This must have caused you many sleepless nights,” she said turning to him.
“It did” Cade answered running his hand across his face.
“They must pay for hurting my friend” she added causing him to smile.
“We are going to get to the bottom of this soon” Ophelia responded with a determined expression on her face.
Cade and Ophelia went into their room and Cade was partially happy that he had shared the problem with her, maybe the saying was true, maybe a problem shared was half solved. He felt a bit better and lighter that she was interested in helping him find who it was.
As he lay on the bed he began to list the possible people who could be the culprit and for some reason, Harper’s name continued coming into his mind. He did not want to think that she would do something as scary as that to him, but she was the only one who had cause to do something like this to him.
It was strange that she had shown up out of the blues after two years of being quiet. He knew her will and how determined she could be to get what she wanted. If the officers asked him tomorrow anyone he suspected he would mention her name without thinking twice.
