Jessica’s POV
I retreated, immediately I understood what was going on in the next room. I moved back and hid in a corner away from prying eyes and anybody that could see me and raise unnecessary alarm. What was Jeremy doing here?
I had broken things off with him the day after Alex returned to Miami, the day I realized that no matter how hard I tried I couldn’t quite get him off my mind. But before then there had been signs and he even claimed that I spoke about him a lot.
I didn’t know he harboured such great hate for the alpha of our pack, but then he wasn’t necessarily a member of the pack, he said he was a werewolf and I did see him transform so there was really no cause to question his origin.
I didn’t expect any sort of retaliation but obviously he was all for it. I heard the gunshot and I saw that Alex had changed to his human form.
I didn’t know what part of his body had been shot but I saw he was wincing. Guilt poured through me as I thought of how inconvenient this was. So he was the one that punk ass Delo had been referring to, had gone far to involve rogues into this.
“You’re a loser!” I heard his voice say to Alex, he had the whole palace held hostage and I wondered how he managed to do it. He literally had only the wits of flirting with anything in a skirt.
“What do you want, asshole?” Alex asked, he still sounded smug and overly confident, my delusional heart bubbled.
I allowed the conversation to turn to whispers around me as I thought of anything to do, whatever I could do to divert the wheel or situation, make it a little better. I couldn’t afford to be seen, at least for the sake of Alex.
I mind linked him.
‘Dummy, why did you let yourself get caught?’ I asked him and it took a while before he caught on.
‘Let me see you try not to get caught.’ He responded and he was quiet, a sound brought me back to reality and it was Jeremy asking Alex a question. He had been too busy communicating with me that he hadn’t heard him.
“What are you thinking of? Or is that whore around here somewhere?” Jeremy roared, and I remembered I had only seen him like this once at a club house one night two months ago.
I had thought that if he could get mad at a bartender who got his order wrong he sure could beat me up for misplacing a pen.
“Nothing. Go on with your prattling about how I’m a dummy and you’re really smart.” He said to him and it only got Jeremy madder, I remained in the corner. I had changed back to my human form so I could curl deeper into a corner.
“She has to be here somewhere. She is sneaky, that’s why I didn’t notice when she was giving you those damn gooey eyes. I had to ask some of my rogues for information.” Jeremy was saying and something caught my eyes.
‘My rogues’ was really just about me or he was something else I didn’t know about. I sighed and immediately realized my mistake, rogues had great hearing.
“Someone is here,” a familiar voice said and it was totally quiet.
‘Way to go,’ Alex said to me and I didn’t bother to answer.
“Go check who it is. Don’t come back if it ain’t that bitch,” Jeremy ordered and I immediately ran out of the corner I was in. I crawled on my chest as I slipped out of the room, they weren’t going to notice me. I was down the stairs when my boot came in contact with the other end of the banister.
“Who is there?” A dumb rogue asked and I wondered who would actually shout, ‘it is I your enemy, come and get me.’
I guess you had to be dumb to be a rogue.
I thought I was off and out when a hand grabbed my foot, he didn’t bother to be subtle when he dragged me by my foot up the stairs.
“I found the whore!” An idiot said and I kicked him in his shin.
“Who the hell told you, you could call her that. Bring her in here,” Jeremy said and I felt so mad at myself.
They brought me into a vast room, it was my first time entering the inner circle of the pack house. I couldn’t imagine how Alex would be feeling, that his guards had allowed a literal invasion in his pack.
I knew he had a plan or atleast was already brewing something, the tales I’ve heard of him were about how ruthless and scary he was. So far he was just annoying and conceited.
“You look bad.” Jeremy said as he assessed me. I knew it was a lie because even my colleague from work -who didn’t talk to me- said I looked like I just returned from a spa, they said it was becoming my signature look.
He came closer to me and grabbed my jaw, forcing me to meet his gaze. His cold blue eyes were even more icy and I wanted to risk it all and kick him in the shins for whatever it was worth.
“What do you really want, asshole? I don’t even know your name!” Alex said and I suspected he was enraged by the close proximity. I didn’t think I was delusional, but then I wasn’t even scared in the face of the problem that looked me in the eyes.
“Who asked you to speak? I’m not a member of your pack. In fact, I’m a literal alpha in my own pack, well not until recently though,” Jeremy chattered, his voice was sickening to my ears. I began to wonder how I coped with his gravel toned voice.
“Spare us the dreary tales, why do you have us here?” I asked him and he turned to look at me, the look he sent me should have scared the wits out of me but I wasn’t interested in being scared.
He brought out an injection from his pocket and seeped it into my skin, I would notice now that I instantly became weak. “Tie them up,” he ordered, his tone having managed to change from mocking to hurtful anger. “Surprised to see him right?” He asked, referring to the bald headed Delo.
I watched with disgust as Delo moved like a fool and tied me, he smelt like garlic and onion. Exactly how I imagined how every bad person should smell.
“What did you put in me?” I asked weakly and he didn’t respond, I was bundled and placed alongside the remaining pack household.
Alex looked so angry that I even felt for him. My limbs were weak and I gave up already. I wouldn’t think it was untrue if one told me Jeremy had some sort of brain disorder that made him act like he wasn’t far from insanity.
“Now all do you listen! I want my pack back! I am the original alpha of the blue moon pack in California! For the longest time I was a beta and reduced to nothingness but we all knew I was the alpha. You bitch, and you Mr Alpha of Duval brought out the side I’ve been trying to conceal and now you’ll have no other choice but to get my pack back again.”
In all honesty, all he had said made no sense in my mind, I didn’t understand how I had interfered with his alpha ambitions.
“You need to sit down man, you’re either drunk or insane,” Alex said and Jeremy turned purple.
“You probably think I’m crazy? My brother Freddy is the alpha though he doesn’t even take his responsibilities seriously, drives away his life. He’s irresponsible,” Jeremy yelled. I wondered who he was telling.
“Better him than you, you’re a lunatic. How do you want to take care of the needs of people?” Alex asked him again, he wasn’t scared, therefore I wasn’t.
Though I did believe with a mind like his he could burst out at any moment and fire a shot.
“I can tell that you are a good leader, you’re tied up with the rest of the members of the packhouse. I think you’re the incompetent one here,” he responded and I felt another wave of guilt pass through me.
That was me again.
“You won’t lead the unfortunate pack, I just can tell.” Alex stubbornly said, he had to have the last words. I allowed myself to dwell on his persona, therefore another layer of likeness opened.
“Shut up! Shut up everyone!” He roared, and Delo supportively stood beside him, I looked at him with disdain, he was a pathetic loser.
“You all are going to help me get my packhouse back and there’s nothing you can do about it unless your whole village of wolves would be wiped out. You can try me if you want!”
He sounded serious, I rested on the walls and watched him display his insanity. It was going to be a long day.
