Jason’s Pov
I was surrounded by elders and I was irritated. I hadn’t even had the time to panic over losing Evelyn again before Chloe summoned me to the town hall.
I walked lazily to their gathering and watched in disgust as they bowed their heads in greeting. These are the same men that were keen on me stepping down from my leadership post. The same one my father passed down to me and I was expected to pass down to my child.
“Alpha Jason! It’s nice to see you again!” One of them, the elder Olive, greeted, his voice was the loudest and nothing screamed hypocrisy more to me than him at that moment.
I just knew he had been the first person to suggest it.
‘Calm down Jason,’ my wolf urged and I did, I didn’t like to get mad but how was the whole town making it so inevitable?
I settled on the high table and reached for files on the pack, remaining where I was.
I had gone through the ledger the night before just before Alex had called and I had noticed foul play. I hated cheating the most out of all of the werewolves ‘ bad attributes so when I sighted manipulation in the contents I knew the iron feast was due and I needed to address the perpetrator.
“Who is elder Reginald?” I asked and all eyes shot to a brash looking man at the far end of the table, he was dressed in an awful two piece and it clicked, a man with such a bad fashion taste will inevitably be a bad thief because I had caught him.
“You handle the pack’s account?” I asked him as my mind roamed to one thousand and one pressing issues that were troubling me.
“Yes alpha! I have for five years now,” he sounded just as he looked, tacky and unnecessarily loud.
“I believe you’re good at your job,” I muttered, taking it slow and giving him the chance to think of a very suitable lie that would convince me he was indeed vindicated.
“I am the treasurer at Transcorp in Texas, I try Alpha,” the man said and I was tempted to ask where the treasurer was.
“Then why are the entries on your ledger not tallying?” I asked him and he looked confused.
I stood up and picked up the book, “I have sent upkeep and renovation plans every week since I was away and prior to that I assigned a funding for the new bridge project, the one the elder Olive son destroyed.
The bridge was never constructed which I confirmed hasn’t been done except for a silly attempt at planning it out. I am disappointed that you would be so foolish in your coyness, and your account statement says that you invested $50, 000 into the bridge project. Do you want to waste our time explaining?” I asked him, getting upset already.
He said nothing.
“It’s embarrassing that a member of the elites and an elder would be shamelessly incapable of covering his tracks, and if any of you ever attempt to be coy be rest assured that I would find out and you will suffer the same fate as your friend.”
They looked at me wondering what my next line of action would be, and it was with no urgency that I ordered the guards to seize him and take him to the dungeon.
“Lock him up until I give instructions,”
I watched the big man break into tears and I felt nothing, no pain, no remorse, no guilt. Just deep indifference and I turned to the rest of them, you don’t become the alpha of a pack because you were considerate.
You’re alpha because you are able to show to the others that you’re more superior and more than capable of leading.
“Good day to the rest of you,” I called out and Johnson was looking at me with shock. He wasn’t expecting this turn of event. “Before you ask, my trip has been an excellent one and I am back now to stay for a while. I still haven’t heard positive feedback about my fiancee and I know you sympathize with me. I have heard your concern and I’m here to let you know that they are irrelevant and couldn’t matter less.”
Loud gasps filled the room and even Chloe looked terrified at my proclamation, how often does an alpha say he didn’t care about the feeling of his pack?
“How can you say that Jason? You know we make the rules as a collective,” Elder Sheen said, disapproval in his tone. I wondered if he thought because he had known me when I was younger he had a say on my decision.
“Unless one of you, with your wives, thinks your wolf can defeat mine in a battle. I haven’t heard where a werewoman determines strength and it’s not an alpha with a spouse that would lead its pack to victory, it’s an alpha with a purpose and as I have addressed this issue here in front of you I expect it to go down and not be spoked of any more,” I finished and was met with a look of approval from most of the pack members.
They murmured but nobody countered, I watched as Johnson burst out of the room and I knew sooner than later I would have to change my beta to someone better.
Evelyn’s Pov
I woke up in a hospital and I was suddenly concerned. Where was I and when had I gotten here? I noticed I no longer had my trashy dress on instead I had a floral dress on.
My first question was who had changed me and where was Freddy? Maybe it was telepathy but his handsome face popped out from behind the curtains.
“Hello beautiful, he muttered,” his Boston accent was clear and attractive as I lay there.
I remembered immediately how I had swooned in the bathroom of the abandoned house and he had caught me.
“What happened and where am I?” I asked him and he smiled even wider.
“California.” He responded and opened the curtains of the window and I winced as the bright light poured into my eyes. I got used to how it feels on my skin quickly.
“What? How and why! How long have I been asleep and why am I in the hospital?” I asked him, there were more questions.
“One question at a time, Pookie. Yes we’re in Cali, you said you wanted to come here. We drove here obviously, you’ve been asleep for two days, if not for the doctor’s reassurance I would have freaked out.” He responded patiently and I was marveled at how different he was from the man who had picked me up from the streets of Miami.
“So why am I in the damn hospital?” I thundered standing up from the bed and straightening my dress.
He looked at me with warmth and smiled again.
“You may have to sit down for this one,” he advised me and I scoffed.
“Just speak already!”
“Congratulations mummy, you’re pregnant.” He announced and just as he had predicted, i sat down.
