Logan POV.
“We need to do something, would changing her save her?” I ask the doctor.
“Theoretically yes, but we haven’t done it before,” the doctor says sounding worried, too had no idea how to deal with this, there are people who studied the aftereffects of the nuclear war, most of them vampires, and half of them believe that the war caused us to become vampires, or maybe it’s just the natural selection only the strongest get to live forever while the rest died.
“We’ll do it, go and do it,” I practically yelled at the doctor now, I didn’t care as long as she got saved, one way or another.
“It’s not that simple, you don’t just bite people and wait for them to change, there are protocols we have to follow,” the doctor says.
“I’ll start doing the calls,” I say getting up, leaving his office calling my office telling them to get the approval for the procedure, fast.
“I’ll do the rest,” Hunter says joining me with making all the calls we had to do to get this thing over with.
“Yes?” William answers his phone, he never says hello, he always answers with a yes or go, he knows we only call him when we need a thing from him.
“We have an emergency, we need to change her now,” I say.
“Explain,” William says.
“Angel, she’s sick, the fever isn’t going down, we’re at the hospital. She’s dying William,” I say.
“who diagnosed her?” William asks.
“Three doctors and Ryan,” I answer him.
“Damn, I loved that little spitfire,” William says sadly knowing that she’s going to end up dead very soon.
“She doesn’t have to die, I need your permission to change her,” I say, ask, and beg all at the same time.
“Changing isn’t safe, especially if she’s sick,” William says.
“It’s a risk we’re willing to take, I need your permission,” I beg him again.
“She’s not going to survive it, Logan, say your goodbyes, don’t torture her,” William tries to explain to me, but she wasn’t going to die.
“She’s stronger than you know,” I try to tell him.
“Humans, they are vulnerable, they aren’t as strong as you think she is,” William says.
“William, we need to try at least,” I beg him.
“I know she’s your first human, but that’s what humans do, they die,” William says.
“Didn’t we take over to stop them from dying, to have a better life, to be together,” I say reminding him why we took over, and why we didn’t stay hidden.
“We took over for our enjoyment and to get a better life, not for them, I’d love for you to think we’re devoted and selfless, but we’re not Logan,” William scolded me.
“Fine, if we’re that selfish, let me do this for me,” I say.
“You’re torturing her,” William says again.
“No, I’m not! I want her to live and I’m trying to do so, while you want to let her die, I’m not going to,” I yelled through the phone, I regretted it as soon as it came out of my mouth, yelling at William never ends well, maybe Dylan would take it with a team spirit but William would never, and now he’s gonna let her die just to teach me some manners.
“You got my permission, to change her. But when she dies don’t come to me crying,” William says ending the call between the two of us not letting me talk anymore, what a great boss.
But I got his permission, I went back toward the office ready to talk with my mate and the doctor telling them that we got it, we got the permission and now we’re ready to keep going.
“What did you get?” Hunter asks me sounding worried.
“William’s approval, we’re not getting his blessing for a while though,” I say and they both look very relieved.
“Let’s go, we’re getting her ready to go under,” the doctor says.
“You shouldn’t be putting her under, the anaesthesia would kill her,” Ryan says with an eye roll.
“Are you a doctor for real?” I asked him just to be sure, but I had my doubts now.
“I’m a doctor, and changing her without anaesthesia is going to be painful,” the doctor says.
“And putting her under with the fever and the way her body has been reacting, she’d have a heart attack before you inject the venom,” Ryan says, I looked at him, I believed him a lot more than I did the doctor.
“The pain would kill her,” the doctor argued.
“Actually after the first injection in her heart, she won’t be feeling anything, she’d go right into shock and her body would mimic a heart attack if you’re fast enough and manage to inject her veins with more venom along with enough adrenaline to keep her heart beating for a couple minutes, then we wait and pray that the gods have taken mercy on us,” Ryan says.
“We’re Christian,” Hunter says between gritted teeth, we don’t believe in gods, we believe in god, and he won’t be letting her go, he’d be here with us.
“That plan is insane, we can’t do that,” the doctor argues yet again.
“It’s saner than the one you got,” Ryan scolded him.
“Who do you believe more? Me or the idiot?” Ryan asks turning to us, I looked at Hunter and I thought the answer was very clear about who we trusted a lot more right now.
“We believe you,” both me and my mate answer at the same time meaning Ryan, he’s right the doctor did sound like he just graduated med school, or maybe just finished watching a re-run of Grace Anatomy with all of the missing episodes, he must have skipped the ones where it says don’t be an idiot.
“I can lead this, be near, she’s going to need some strong blood,” Ryan says.
“You’re not medically trained,” the doctor says, but we believed more in Ryan.
“I have played with needles for years, I’m really good at it,” Ryan says.
“You have never changed anyone,” the doctor tries to defend himself.
“Neither have you, and I love needle play, how many needles have you injected? I know it’s the work of nurses usually,” Ryan says.
“If you’re going to trust him over my medical opinion, then get out of my office,” the doctor says offended.
“Gladly,” Ryan answered getting out of the office with us following him, we all made it out of his room.
“Now let’s get started,” Ryan says going to talk with the nurses, he didn’t order them around, he used a charming smile, it’s how he gets the humans and more submissive vampires to fall down for him, just a charming smile, and then he show them his other face, and it works more often than not.
We were moved to a surgery room, and he got the venom ready along with blood, some of the volunteering vampires and others from the two of us, we saw Ryan begin the procedure, a big needle in the heart, followed by a smaller one in the arms and feet, he kept on injecting her, he didn’t go slowly, he was pumping her body with the venom she went from pale to ghostly white, I was pretty sure she’s dead, she needs to die to come back alive as a vampire.
“Hook up the blood for me sweetheart,” Ryan tells one of the nurses, and she does, she didn’t have any vein clean of the needle bites, she got them everywhere.
“Should she be back?” I ask.
“In theory, it could take days,” Ryan says.
“In theory?” Hunter asks with a raised brow.
“I haven’t done this before,” Ryan says with a shrug.
“I read about it, in the special medical class, we should keep an eye on her heartbeat, as long as it doesn’t stop we’re safe,” one of the nurses says.
“Oh, my smart baby, you’re getting a reward when all of this is done,” Ryan says to her with a wink.
“Pay attention to what’s on hand,” I say trying to get his attention back to the baby.
“I can’t do much anymore, eye on her, keep blood flowing, and if it stops, CPR,” Ryan says hand over the nurse’s shoulder taking her out of the room, and going toward god knows where to do god knows what.
“We’ll be back in an hour or two if she’s a good girl,” he says with a wink finally leaving the room.
I took a seat and so did Hunter we monitored her heartbeat, we monitored the blood, we kissed her ice-cold cheeks, and she went from having a high fever to being freezing cold, we weren’t born this way, although some vampires are, we weren’t we got changed, but I was too young and it was too long ago to remember anything, did it really hurt? Or where we too full of ourselves to care that we got changed, does becoming a vampire change everything you once knew and loved?
“She’s going to survive,” Hunter assures me.
“She’s very strong, stronger than we know,” I agree with him, she’s not one to give up.
“Should we tell William any update?” Hunter asks me, he takes over the big decisions but the ones that have to do with the boss, it’s up to me.
“I’m going to tell him when it’s over,” I say with a small smile.
“You want to gloat that you managed to do so?” Hunter asks me.
“You know me too well,” I answer him with a smile.
“Try to get some rest, I’ll take the first shift,” Hunter says, he’s right we’re going to need some rest but I couldn’t close my eyes, not when she’s that cold and dead on the table, the only thing telling me she’s still alive was the beeping of her heart monitor.
“She’s my strong baby, she’s going to make it,” I say out loud, maybe to myself or maybe to my mate or the girl that’s laying like the dead over the table, I couldn’t sleep, I guess we’ll be sharing this shift and all the ones to come after it.
