All the men knew instantly that this detective of a woman just crossed a line. Their faces showed that what she said was bad, but she didn’t know why.
Even the Police Captain didn’t understand why their faces looked horror struck. It wasn’t like they were shocked by the revelation. It was like they were shocked at the audacity of the revelation.
Captain Luiz looked to the Alpha to see if he had the same expression as his men. But Alpha Knight’s eyes were shut. He had crossed his arms and all veins popped out as if he was carrying a very heavy weight. His jaws were clenched tight but he appeared calm. He never opened his eyes to look at them.
“I’m sorry but did I say something wrong?” Detective Kelly Reynolds asked. This wasn’t the reaction she expected from them when she broke the news.
“Uhm, Detective Reynolds. Don’t you think you’re wrong? If you say she was responsible for the attack, then why would she make herself a casualty? She’s at the verge of death right now,” Jake spoke up.
“Mr Beta, do you know that there are thousands of people who sacrifice themselves just for the sake of the higher power they are bounded to? I made a quick research about this lady and figured out she’s from Selcece Pack. Do you know Selcece Pack is home to one of the most notorious groups in the country?
“These guys have dedicated members who would do anything for the group. If I had more time, I would have looked into her life and figured out if she has anything to do with that group,” Kelly answered. The men stole glances at Wayne. But strangely, he was still standing with his eyes closed, his arms crossed-looking calm.
“She has a point,” the captain supported her.
“Thank you, captain,” she appreciated and crossed her arms too as she stared at Jake.
“I know Olive. We all do. She’s not responsible for this,” Shem defended. Terry scratched the back of his head and glanced at Wayne again.
“Go on with your crash site investigation. We have to talk,” Jake ordered. The captain bowed in respect and walked away with the detective. Jake cleared his throat and stared at Wayne. They were all silent as they watched him.
“Is she gone?” Wayne’s deep voice sounded.
“Yes, Alpha,” Jake answered. Wayne exhaled deeply and opened his eyes. They were a fiery blue with golden lights floating in them.
“Good. She was getting on my nerves,” he stated and pocketed his hands.
“Are you all right?” Jericho asked.
“Yeah. Come over here with me,” he said to them and began to walk away. He kept walking and they followed him.
Suddenly, he stopped and began to sniff the air. They followed suit and they too inhaled a scent… a terrible scent like putrid meat lingering in the air.
“This was the spot I saw a shadow-like figure. As I was driving, I thought I saw a black figure standing by the road. I glanced sideways but didn’t see it anymore. I’m not sure what it was,” he revealed and crossed his arms again.
“This smell… could it belong to it?” Shem asked.
“It should be. And did you say it was a dark force you felt?” Jake asked. Wayne nodded and walked in a circle at that very spot he sighted the figure.
“I’m getting that very same energy right here. But… it’s really faint now,” he muttered.
“Alpha, I’m not trying to support what that detective woman said but… I think she’s made a bit of sense,” Crusoe spoke up for the first time since the whole event.
“Crusoe!” Jericho and Shem shouted at him.
“Let him speak,” Wayne ordered.
“You only began to go out all alone since she came. So whoever is responsible for this knows about you and Olive,” Crusoe continued. Everyone kept quiet, waiting for him to go on with what he had to say. He was an intelligent fellow and often made sense.
“So this person just waited to hurt you, just like Detective Reynolds said. However, I don’t believe Olive is this person. She’s you’re mate, hurting you would be hurting herself.”
“She is in a theatre right now, Crusoe. Maybe she wanted to die after killing him? Was it a suicide mission? Finishing what she started?” Terry asked.
All eyes darted to him, including Wayne’s. He didn’t want to let his anger about the accusations out because he knew they might be sense in them.
He cared about Olive. Maybe he was beginning to even… love her. If what he was feeling could be called that.
But he didn’t know how to have a blind spot for people. He believed no one was hundred percent good and anything could happen. It could truly be that Olive was sent to finalize her plan of killing him. And since they were mates, she wanted to kill herself in the process. This suspicion killed him. But he couldn’t rule out the possibility because this was a battle.
“What do you mean by ‘finishing what she started?'” Shem asked with furrowed brows as he darted his eyes from Terry to Crusoe.
“While we went to Selcece Pack, Olive was sent to assassinate Wayne,” Jake stated and Shem’s jaw dropped.
“What?!”
“She was a part of The Vrek Cult and Cynthia’s rival. She was sent to kill Wayne but they turned out to be mates,” Jake explained further.
“Shit. Why didn’t you guys tell me?”
Jake shrugged.
“You left out the part that she was supposed to die by my hands too. And how she got tor. tured by my orders,” Wayne spoke up. The thought of his men having second thoughts about his mate was painful. Deep down, he felt Olive was innocent. But he was afraid that it could just be his stupid mate bond playing with him. This was the weakness he never had. He never had a blindspot for anyone and now he had a huge one.
“This is messed up,” Jericho muttered and exhaled deeply. He too, really liked Olive now.
They all stayed quiet for a few minutes.
“I don’t think she’s responsible for this,” Shem later spoke up.
“The oath of The Vrek Cult breaks off immediately one finds his or her mate, right? Olive couldn’t have been working for the cult after the oath is broken,” he added.
“Except if she wants to. The oath will remain if she desires to keep working for the cult despite finding her mate,” Jake stated.
“So she desired it to remain so she could finish up her mission, is that what you’re saying?”
“Yes, Shem. That’s my point,” Jake answered. Shem raked his fingers through his hair frustratingly just like Wayne would always do.
Wayne walked away from them so he could think properly. He remembered all the things Olive had told him about her life. And how glad she was to be with him. He could easily detect a lie or a fallacy, but he felt she had been telling him only the truth.
He remembered his promises to her and rebuked himself for being tempted to break them. He would never hurt Olive. He couldn’t do it. He turned around and looked at the men who looked as confused as he was.
“Olive isn’t responsible. If she was, then she would have done it without creating a scene. A simple powerful attack in our room would have done the job.”
He walked back to them and folded his arms.
“The reason she was sent to kill me wasn’t because the cult wanted me dead. It was because they wanted her dead. I say this attack wasn’t planned for me but for her. The Vrek Cult wants Olive dead,” he said firmly.
“But why? What has she done?” Jericho asked.
“Beats me,” Wayne shrugged.
Two seconds later and his phone rang. He pulled it out and saw it was a call from Dolly. He picked it immediately.
“Hello,” he said into the phone.
“Wayne. The surgery is surprisingly over. Olive’s body kept regenerating new cells and tissues over all her injuries. The doctors had to speed up with the surgery and remove the metal straight away in case it would get healed up with her body. The police just arrived and a certain detective asked for the metal for examination. Now, the police are saying that the metal is actually a type of weapon which can be fired like an arrow to hit a target and kill the person at the spot,” Dolly ranted. She sounded like she was out of breath and was hurrying away from the sound of her feet. Everything she said was very fast but Wayne grabbed it all.
“So you’re saying?” he asked.
“Olive was purposely struck with that thing, Wayne. She was the target. Another thing, two strange men were found sneaking into her ward with a poisoned syringe five minutes ago. They were dressed like doctors. There’s another commotion in the reception and I’m hurrying there right now.”
“What? No! Stay with Olive! I’m coming there right now!” Wayne barked and hung up on the call. He began to run towards the car he came with. The men had heard Dolly too, so they darted towards the van and drove as fast as they could to the hospital. Every one of them knew what was going on at the hospital. It was just a strategy to finish off their target. Causing a commotion to divert the police’s attention in order to take out Olive.
