Chapter 155
The hearing.
Detective James POV:
I found myself in this dark and lonely alley. It looks exactly the way Chris narrated it.
I walked quietly as I disguised myself looking like a normal man, to avoid being noticed.
I went deep into the Alley at some point I began to wonder if I will be found if something happens to me or this is a set up by the syndicate trying to Lily.
I walked down as I pushed any all the negative thoughts asides and plunged through.
There was a small house sitting in the middle of nowhere, with no one outside of it.
“What if this is just an abandoned house and no one lives in it?” I thought as I went further but my foot was pulled by a force from the ground.
I sighed with anxiety as I looked down and it was a string that was meant to protect the house and probably inform if there was an intruder.
“Thank God, I was careful that I did not go any further else my presence here will have been known to everyone in that house.” I thought and mind raced on how I was going to get into the house without the alarm going off.
Soon, I was already trying to get it out of the way, and I was done after a long time.
“Phew!” I sighed as I got closer to the house.
I heard loud chattering between two women as the voices implied and I got closer to the window and peeped.
To my surprise, sitting there was Hailey and Kayla. I could not believe my eyes… everywhere we searched for Hailey proved abortive, I never knew that she was in this place of all places.
“She thinks I will let her out of jail when her sister is still in jail!” Kayla said laughing hysterically.
“She would be so mad now that she has been caught!” Hailey says and I deduced that they were speaking about Lily.
So, it was a set up all along, I wondered.
“This is my chance to get justice and I am not going to let this one slide through my fingers.” I say and alert the whole team and stayed in a safe place until there were there.
The sound of sirens brought immense joy to my face and seeing them draw closer, I could not contain my joy.
“Sirens!” Kayla says with her eyes widely opened.
“We need to run!” Hailey says, then I busted in with a smirk.
“No so fast, I say.
“Besides, it is game up for you all now!” I told them, but they could not believe their eyes.
And before they could do anything, they were all surrounded, and they were taken away.
I went through the entire in search for evidence, because I could not leave their empty handed anyways.
I went through the kitchen, the living room and the bedroom but it felt that I could not find anything.
Then, the chest of drawers struck my attention.
I went closer to have a look and it was filled with a lot of papers and on top of it, it was Kayla photo where she looked younger with the logo of the syndicate behind her.
I went through the documents, and I found out that Kayla was the overall head of the syndicate.
I could not understand what was going on here, because I thought it was Megan’s father all along… and now… Kayla.
“There is a lot that I need to know!” I say and I went back to meet the team.
From there, we proceeded to get them interrogated.
“Hailey, you look like you are never going to say a word.” I joke.
“Now, let us get on with the questioning… first of all you escaped being apprehended when Kayla was… do you know what manner of crime that is?” I ask and get ignored.
“And Kayla, you risk spending your entire life in jail for escaping jail and faking your own death and placing it in an innocent person.” I tell her.
“With that being said, it us high time you start speaking.” I say staring into their eyes.
“Okay, I will go first…” Kayla said as Hailey signaled her not to as they both looked at me and burst out laughing.
“I guess, this entire thing seems to be a joke but then, your time is up so when you receive ready to speak, I will be in my office waiting for you.” I told them and took my leave immediately.
As I went through the information I gathered from Kayla and Hailey’s raid, I realized that I had solid information.
Even of Kayla and Hailey do not agree to these allegations, I have all the evidence to use against them.
I felt proud of myself that the entire syndicate will be brought down because I think I have laid hold in the masterminds.
Then, the information struck me.
Megan’s father was involved with the syndicate because, Kayla was trying to get at them.
But it was not adding up as Kayla was younger then.
However, we will be in court and hear all what they will say.
It was time for hearing, and I sat in the courtroom, my eyes fixed on the two women who have been playing a dangerous game. I have been waiting for this moment, ready to expose the truth.
As the prosecutor calls Kayla to the stand, I lean forward, my eyes locked on hers. She took a deep breath, her voice steady.
“I was in debt, and Sarah offered me a way out. She promised me a share of the profits if I helped her with the syndicate’s dealings.”
My eyes narrow.
“How dare she lies to the court!” I was getting livid.
Next, Hailey takes the stand, her voice trembling.
“I was scared, Detective James. Sarah had something on me, something that would ruin my life. I had no choice but to do what she said.”
Are they trying to nip Sarah into their web now?” I wonder.
“When they were all working together towards the same goal?” I wonder as I stared at them.
The blackmail, coercion, and deceit were getting out of hands.
“They need to be stopped.” I thought.
I have seen culprits trying to evade justice but with Kayla and Hailey it is just out of hand.
As I sat in the court, I tried to bring myself to think if they had any atom of human feeling.
But with all they have to tell and showcase to this court, they had none in them.
However, I am not surprised.
They are the syndicate.
