Chapter 156
~ The Time is here. ~
Detective James POV:
I sat in the courtroom, my eyes kept on widening in disbelief as Kayla and Hailey spin their web of deceit.
Their lives are contradicting everything I have heard before. I can’t help but wonder why they’re trying to hide.
Kayla’s voice is steady, but her eyes dart around the room, avoiding mine.
“I never knew anything about the syndicate, Detective. I was just a pawn in Sarah’s game.” My eyes became wide.
Hailey’s voice trembles, but her words are laced with malice.
“Detective James was obsessed with solving the case. He coerced me into making false statements.” She reveals.
“What?” I muttered silently as I grip my fist.
My mind races with the implications. They’re trying to turn the tables, make me out to be the villain.
But I know the truth. I’ve seen the evidence, the trail of deceit that leads straight to them.
I took a deep breath, my voice steady. “That’s not true,” I say, my eyes locked on theirs.
“You’re trying to cover your tracks, but it’s too late. The truth will come out.” I thought.
The prosecutor’s eyes narrow, and I know they’re thinking the same thing.
These women are desperate, and desperate people will say anything to escape justice.
But I’m not buying it and the games not over yet.
I guessed the judge got to know of their schemes as his gavel slams down, interrupting Kayla and Hailey’s testimonies.
“That’s enough!” he thunders, his eyes stern. “I will not have perjury committed in my courtroom. You are both aware of the consequences of lying under oath?”
Kayla and Hailey exchange nervous glances, their eyes darting around the room.
The judge’s voice is firm.
“Let me remind you. Perjury is a felony, punishable by up to five years in prison. And I will not hesitate to hold you both in contempt if you continue to deceive this court.” He says.
The courtroom falls silent, the weight of the judge’s words sinking in. Kayla and Hailey’s eyes drop, their faces pale.
The lawyer leans forward, as my eyes locked on the judge.
“Your Honor, I request a recess to regroup and reassess our strategy.” He says.
The judge nods, his expression grim.
“Granted. But let me make one thing clear.” He says.
“I will get to the bottom of this. And if I find out that either of you has lied to this court, there will be consequences.” He tells them.
The courtroom erupts into a flurry of activity as the judge bangs his gavel again, calling for a recess.
I watch Kayla and Hailey, their eyes darting around the room, their faces etched with fear. The game is far from over.
The judge’s voice was firm and commanding as he addressed the bailiffs.
“Take them away. I want them held in contempt until the next hearing. And, prosecutor, I want all witnesses brought before me at the next hearing.” He says.
“No exceptions. I want to get to the bottom of this web of deceit and uncover the truth once and for all.” He says.
They moved forward, handcuffing Kayla and Hailey as they led them away.
The two women’s faces were pale, their eyes wide with fear as they realized the gravity of their situation.
They had tried to deceive the court, and now they would face the consequences.
The prosecutor nodded, his face grim and determined.
“Yes, Your Honor. I’ll make sure all witnesses are and present at the next hearing. We will leave no stone unturned in our pursuit of justice.” He say.
I watched as the courtroom erupted into chaos, the sound of murmurs and shuffling feet filling the air. The judge’s gavel came down once more, calling the court to order.
“We will be arraigned in one week. I expect all witnesses to be present and ready to testify. Any further deceit or obstruction of justice will be met with swift and severe consequences.” He says.
The courtroom slowly came to order, the tension palpable as the weight of the judge’s words sank in.
The game was far from over, and I was ready to see it through to the end. Justice would be served, no matter what it took.
I turn to Megan, my eyes softening as she has been waiting for ages to get a reply.
“Hey, don’t worry. I know this is tough, but I promise you, we’ll get justice. Hailey and Kayla’s lack of cooperation won’t stop us. We’ll find a way to make sure the truth comes out.” I tell her.
Megan’s eyes well up with tears, her voice shaking.
“But what if they lie again? What if they convince everyone that I’m the one who is the culprit?” She asks with tears in her eyes.
I place a reassuring hand on her shoulder.
“We’ll be prepared for that. We’ll have evidence, witnesses, and a solid case.” I assure.
“We won’t let them get away with their deceit. You’re not alone in this, Megan. I’m here for you, and we’ll see this through together.” Megan looked on with pain.
I offer her a gentle smile, trying to instill some hope.
“We’ll get through this, and when we do, you’ll finally get the justice you deserve.” I repeat.
Megan’s eyes flash with determination, her jaw set in a firm line all of a sudden.
“I don’t care if they try to silence me, Detective. I’ll tell the court everything. All their schemes, all their lies, all the ways they manipulated.” She says.
“I’ll make sure the truth comes out, no matter what it takes. I’ll not be intimidated or bullied into keeping quiet. I’ll stand up for myself, and I’ll make sure they pay for what they’ve done.” Megan determined voice filled everywhere.
Her voice is firm, resolute, and I can see the steel in her spine.
She’s been through hell, but she’s not backing down.
She’s found her strength, and she’s ready to fight.
I nod, my eyes locked on hers, my heart swelling with admiration for this brave young woman.
“That’s the spirit, Megan,” I say, my voice filled with encouragement.
“We’ll work together to make sure justice is served.
Megan nods, a small smile on her face.
“Thank you, Detective. Just knowing that you believe me and are on my side makes me feel like I can finally breathe again.”
I smile back, my eyes locked on hers. “You’re not alone, Megan. We’re in this together, and we’ll see it through to the end. I promise you that.”
Now it the day that Megan gets to witness in court.
I have waited for this day for so long.
The courtroom door opens, and the prosecutor walks in, a determined look on his face. “Detective, are you ready to proceed?”
I nod, standing up. “Yes, let’s do this.”
Megan stands up beside me, her eyes fixed on the prosecutor.
I’m ready,” she says.
Together, we walk into the courtroom, ready to face Hailey and Kayla and bring their web of deceit crashing down.
The game is far from over, but we’ll emerge victorious in the end. Justice will be served, and the truth will finally be revealed.
