Nicklaus’s POV
“Mateo, do you believe Jessica?” I know Mateo will never act based on his emotions, and he will tell me nothing but the truth. Just because he might be in love with her doesn’t mean he is going to side with her. He is the best person to ask such a question.
“Alpha Nicklaus, I dare not answer such a question, and I am okay with any final decision you take as well.” He went down on his knees.
“I give you the order, and you can speak. Tell me what you think. Who do you think Jessica is?” I asked again.
“I have no idea about her, my Alpha. I can’t give false testimony about her either.” He replied, and I realized he is afraid to speak his mind. I hate it; he should have known her by now and be able to say whether she is good or capable of doing something evil.
“What will you do if I try to lock her up?” I asked, trying to gauge his reaction.
“I dare not do anything to defy the Alpha’s order. Your wish is my command, Alpha.” He replied, still as loyal as ever. What do I do with him now? He is refusing to speak up his mind, and I know he loves her deeply. Can’t he defend the one he loves and cares for?
“Is there anything troubling your mind?” He questioned.
“Yes, this case placed before me is troubling my heart. I need to know if Jessica is capable of what she is accused of or not. I guess I will just have to wait for the interview then. By that time, I will know what to say and what order to give.” I added and stood on my feet, turning around.
“Can I say something, Alpha?”
“Yes, you can.” I gave him the opportunity to speak, but I didn’t turn around. I suppose he is always intimidated by my eyes, so it’s best I remain this way to listen to what he has to say.
“With the few times I have spent with Jessica, I can say she is a good person and has no room for evil. If she is truly guilty of those crimes, she had an opportunity to run away at the motel. Instead, she got so eager to return to us and witness the life of our kind as well.”
What he just said makes sense. She is not guilty at all. No one would want to be caught while carrying out such evil schemes. He also said something that gave me a change of heart.
“Lastly, if she was guilty, she is powerful enough to take everyone down. Instead, she remains unharmed and tries to explain herself. But I believe during the interrogation, you will be able to give your final word as well.”
“Thank you for being sincere with me. Go to her now; I know she will be scared.” I added with a smile.
“Thank you, Alpha. You are wise.” He said before taking his leave. I sat on the chair, thinking and reflecting on everything. If she is not the one, then who could have worn her face to trick the people? I feel like I am missing something valuable here, and I need to find out as soon as possible. Otherwise, the enemy will strike again and catch me unaware, just as they did before.
“What do you have to say, Lethal?” I asked in my wolf form, and he replied, “The issue is complicated, but I will say let’s wait for the interrogation. Maybe by then we will know what step to take, and everything Gabby and Mateo have said should be considered as well.”
“Okay, I guess I am a little free. I need some rest for now, and then I will go to Gabby and apologize to her for walking out angrily.”
“Yeah, you should do that. You know she is new to this. Being a Luna takes time, so don’t rush her,” he said, and I felt guilty for being too harsh on her.
Trying to rest, one of the pack members came to me and said, “I am sorry for interrupting your rest, Alpha.”
“I will punish you later. Just tell me why you are here?” I questioned with my eyes closed.
“Luna Gabriella came here to see you.”
“Really? Where is she? Let her in,” I said with a smile on my face. I guess she is not angry after all.
“We did as you commanded, not to let anyone in, so she has left.”
“Get lost,” I yelled at him. Now she will think I am still angry at her.
I left the room and stepped out to look for her. I was told she went to the garden, and I approached the garden quickly. But I stopped when I saw her with Estella, looking so happy as they played together.
I feel so lucky to have them in my life. I am blessed with a beautiful wife and daughter. My family is already complete, and I will do everything possible to keep harm from getting close to them ever again. That’s why this war; I must divert it as soon as possible with everything I’ve got.
I kept watching them and was about to leave so I wouldn’t bother them at all, but Estella called me, “Daddy.” She stood on her feet and rushed to hug me.
“My beautiful daughter, wow, you are so heavy.” I carried her and pretended like I was about to fall to the ground.
“I know you will not let me fall, Dad. I know you are so strong,” she said, and I am happy that my daughter has so much confidence in me. It’s a good thing, and I will never let her down or fail her when she needs me the most in her life.
“Yes, your dad is strong enough. I was just joking. Are you having a good time with Mom without me? I’m jealous,” I added, and Gabby stood up with a smile.
“You don’t have to be jealous, Dad. You are the best cook ever, and Mom is jealous about that as well.”
“Really?” I asked, laughing, and Gabby also smiled.
“Daddy, will you make dinner for us tonight? The maids are terrible with their cooking methods, and I miss your meals, Dad.”
“Daddy is busy, sweetie. Maybe some other time. He will make time for you.”
“But I want Daddy’s meal.”
