Sophia’s POV
As the night wore on, I couldn’t shake the nagging worry that gnawed at me. I reached for my phone and dialed Tyler’s number, my heart pounding with anticipation. The phone rang and rang, but there was no answer. Anxiety crept in, and I redialed the number, hoping for a different outcome. Again, it went unanswered.
I tried calling Jake next, praying that at least one of them would pick up and ease my growing apprehension. But the result was the same-no answer, just the cold, unfeeling silence of voicemail.
With a heavy heart, I hung up and stared at my phone screen. The minutes ticked by like hours, and it seemed like time had come to a standstill. I couldn’t help but worry about Tyler and Jake. They had been through so much, and now, with the Wolf Hunter Organization under attack, their lives hung in the balance.
The clock on the wall read 11 o’clock in the evening, but sleep was elusive. I tossed and turned in my bed, my mind filled with thoughts of Alexander, Tyler, and Jake. The darkness outside seemed to mirror the uncertainty that had taken hold of my heart.
I checked my phone once more, desperately hoping for a message or a call from one of them. But there was nothing, just the haunting silence of unanswered calls and empty messages.
Frustration and fear welled up inside me, and I couldn’t stay still any longer. I wanted to slip out of bed, not wanting to disturb Daniel and Daisy, who were sleeping soundly.
I couldn’t shake the restlessness that had consumed me as I lay in bed, staring at the ceiling. The darkness of the night pressed in on me, and I felt a profound sense of unease. Daniel, my son, had always been perceptive, and he seemed to sense my restlessness even in his own slumber.
As I carefully got out of bed, I looked over at my daughter, Daisy, who was sound asleep, her small form sprawled out comfortably under the covers. Her peaceful innocence brought a small smile to my face. But it was Daniel, my mature and composed young son, who had woken and noticed my restlessness.
With sleepy eyes and a voice filled with childlike concern, he asked me, “Mom, what’s wrong? Are you worried about Dad?”
I blinked back tears at his perceptive question, realizing that I couldn’t hide my emotions from him. Daniel had always been wise beyond his years, and he had a way of understanding things that often left me in awe. I knelt beside his bed, my hand gently brushing a lock of hair away from his forehead. “Oh, Daniel, you’re so clever. You always know what’s on my mind.”
He sat up, his eyes filled with genuine concern. “Tell me, Mom. I can handle it. I know Dad is dealing with the Rogues, and it’s making you worried, right?”
I was taken aback by his words. How had he known about Alexander’s involvement with the Rogues? I had been careful not to discuss such matters in front of the children, wanting to shield them from the dangers of our world. “How did you find out, Daniel?”
He looked at me with a maturity that was well beyond his years, his expression earnest. “I overheard a conversation between Emilia and Dad in the study a while ago. They were talking about the Rogues causing trouble for the Shadow City, and I figured Dad must be really mad at them.”
I was both surprised and proud of my son’s intelligence and sensitivity. He had pieced together information he had overheard and come to a logical conclusion. “You’re right, Daniel,” I admitted, my voice soft. “Dad is dealing with a very difficult situation right now, and it’s making me worried. But he’s doing everything he can to keep us safe.”
Daniel nodded, his eyes filled with understanding. “I know, Mom. Dad is strong, and he’ll come back to us. We have to trust him.”
I couldn’t help but smile at his unwavering faith in his father. “You’re absolutely right, my wise little boy. We have to trust him, and we have to be strong for him too.”
He crawled out of bed and hugged me tightly, his small arms wrapping around me with surprising strength. “I love you, Mom,” he said, his voice filled with sincerity.
Tears welled up in my eyes as I held him close. “I love you too, Daniel, more than you’ll ever know.”
As we embraced, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of pride and gratitude for the incredible children I had. They were my anchor in this tumultuous world, my source of strength and hope.
But as the night wore on, I realized that Daniel had stayed awake, sensing my restlessness and wanting to comfort me. It was already midnight, and he should have been sleeping soundly. I stroked his hair gently and encouraged him to go back to sleep.
“Daniel, you’ve been so brave and understanding,” I whispered. “But now, it’s time for you to rest. Dad will be back soon, and everything will be okay.”
He nodded, his eyes heavy with sleep, and lay back down on his bed. “Goodnight, Mom,” he mumbled, his voice barely audible.
“Goodnight, my sweet boy,” I replied, leaning down to kiss his forehead. As I watched him drift back into slumber, I couldn’t help but marvel at the depth of his understanding and the strength of our family bond.
As I returned to my own bed, I hoped and prayed for Alexander’s safe return. The night seemed to stretch on endlessly, but I knew that dawn would come, bringing with it the promise of a new day and, hopefully, answers about the fate of the Wolf Hunters and the Rogues.
