Mia
I was nervous once again before the mirror but my emotions weren’t as nerve-racking as they were when I was going out to that party the triplets had invited me to.
Sasha wasn’t surprised at my confusion any longer. She had seemed to get used to it. After all, she had watched me go on dates with a couple of men since we became friends and never had there been a day that I was comfortable with dressing up.
She leaned back on her bed, watching me as I stood there confused on what to wear. She seemed to have given up on me. She wasn’t totally looking at me or trying to help me out with my troubles. She sat, pressing her fingers on her phone as she gave me side looks occasionally just to tell me that she was with me.
I held up a gown to her. “The blue gown or the green one?”
“That is your decision to make.” She shrugged.
I growled at her. “You can be mean at times.” I said to her in a teasing voice.
“Your date is here.” She announced suddenly.
I went into panic mode. That couldn’t be right. Was Sammy that excited about our date that he forgot the time he was meant to pick me up? I hoped not. I hoped that wasn’t the case.
Sasha started laughing when she saw the stricken look on my face and I realized that she was messing with me.
I hissed at her. “You seem to be enjoying this.”
“Of course.” She nodded. “It’s been long I had fun this much. What are you afraid of?”
“Sammy knows that I’m not really interested in being with him as an item but is glad that I’m going with him despite that. I’m trying to avoid a situation that would make me apologize to him and make him feel that I don’t want to be with him. I don’t want to rub it in his face that I would rather prefer to stay home and watch movies while dumping some popcorn into my mouth.”
“Why then did you agree to go with him since you know you would rather sit at home?”
“I have a weakness for hope, I guess.”
“What do you mean?”
“You don’t have to worry about that.” I smiled at her as I shrugged my body into the green gown.
It was a firm fit on my body and I added some sparkling earrings to it. I looked simple, like I was just taking a stroll down the street but I still glowed with beauty and elegance.
As I was just about to put down my lipstick, done with my makeup, the doorbell rang and I smiled as I walked to the door.
I gave Sasha a little wave as I walked to the door. “See you soon, girlfriend.”
She nodded. “Have fun.”
I walked out and Sammy was right at the door, his eyes focused on it, waiting for me till I showed up.
He wasn’t slouching or doing anything that he could have done to show that he was bored and keep himself busy and I knew that he was going to keep on standing till I came out, even if I came out ten minutes later than I was meant to.
“Sammy,” I called out to him in a warm greeting as soon as I got out and saw him. “Good evening.”
“You look nice.” He said, his eyes sparkling and I knew that he meant it.
“Thank you.” I smiled genuinely at him.
He wasn’t looking at me like he wanted to undress me as other guys would do or just saying that compliment to make me relax for the night.
He meant what he has said, every word of it and I groaned, wondering what was wrong with me. He seemed like a nice guy and I didn’t understand why I just couldn’t warm up to him.
I didn’t like me in the manner that he liked me. Regardless of his hard I tried, I just couldn’t find a way to melt towards him and melt in the manner that was needed of me. Anytime I thought of Sammy, I always pictured him as a friend and never as a boyfriend.
I wondered if I should tell him the truth before we left but as I looked at those boyish eyes filled with happiness, I knew I didn’t have enough in me to dampen the joy in his soul.
I was already likening myself to the dark wizard in the way I thought and found it hard to let go and I felt like shit about myself. I wasn’t about to prove it right that I could just be like her in the way I behaved as well.
Why couldn’t I like Sammy? I didn’t think I had the answer just like I didn’t think I had the answer to when I was going to be married – a question mum had once asked me.
I had been surprised when she had asked me that and had told her not to worry about it, that I would be serious about getting myself a boyfriend.
I had told mum that that day but I didn’t think I had done anything about it since then. I never thought of boys in the obsessive ways that other girls did and here was a boy before me and I didn’t know what to do about him.
I sighed, pulling myself back to the present. I was just going to enjoy tonight and not stress myself about whether I liked him or not. He wasn’t even asking me to. He only wanted me to spend some time with him in the hopes that I was going to like him in the end. I was the one who was freaking out unnecessarily about the situation on ground.
He wasn’t going to ask me if I loved him or not tonight. Hell, he wasn’t even going to ask me to marry him or become exclusive. Why was I freaking out?
I didn’t know but I felt an odd feeling in my chest that I was wasting his time by giving him unnecessary hope and I felt like a bitch about that.
I smiled at him and arched my eyebrows when I realized that he wasn’t making any attempt to move. Were we about to have the date here?
I finally noticed that he didn’t just have a smile on his face. He had his hands behind his back and I narrowed my eyes at him as he slowly brought them out.
It must have taken him a little bit of toil to have his hands behind his back like that for the past five minutes and I thought of his future wife and was sad that it wasn’t going to be me.
Sammy was really a good man and a girl would be lucky to have him.
“Here.” He smiled, extending a lone strand of flower to me.
“Rose.” I smiled, accepting the stalk even though I wasn’t going to keep it for long. I didn’t like rose flowers but he didn’t have to know about it. “Thank you. I love it.”
He had given me a gift in sincerity. It would be odd of me to not reciprocate. I didn’t like the gift but I appreciated the gesture. Even if I didn’t think of getting myself a boyfriend, I had fantasies of being given flowers by guys and I was glad for this gesture.
Even though I had never had a boyfriend, I could boldly say that I had had some fantasies about a love life that were already fulfilled because of my colleagues who had crushes on me and wouldn’t give up.
“Shall we?”
“Yes.” I grinned, allowing him to walk me down the stairs.
Surprisingly, I had fun with Sammy on our outing which were not a date. I laughed so hard with his humor that I hoped he would ask when we would do this again.
What changed? I wasn’t really attentive at the last date and he hadn’t seem to interest me much?
Was this fun because I was determined to not make him feel bad or had he learnt something better about making a woman feel relaxed with him?
Whatever the case was, I knew I had some fun. He walked me back to my apartment when we got to the company house. He didn’t have to do that but I appreciated his gentlemanly nature still.
He could have just blown me a goodnight kiss and walk to his own part of the house once we got to the house, knowing that I would be safe but he just had to be a cute thing.
Sweet Sammy.
I stopped in my tracks as we got to the apartment I shared with Sasha and saw Quinn waiting for me by the door. His eyes were hard, glinting with anger as he focused on Sammy.
“Where have you been?”
His words were directed to me but his gaze was focused intensely and harshly on Sammy.
Poor Sammy. I already felt bad and embarrassed that he had to witness this. His eyes were on me and I knew that he was expecting me to give him an explanation.
I wasn’t going to deny him that. I was just about to talk when Quinn walked up to where we were and pulled me away from Sammy’s side and over to his.
I glanced up at him, ready to give him a piece of my mind when I noticed the expression on his face. I was stunned by what I found there. What was wrong with him? He had no right to act the way he was.
I looked at Sammy and realized that he was looking at me as well. I let out a frustrated groan as I saw the look in his eyes. He was looking at me like I had betrayed his trust, like he couldn’t believe that I was a player.
I sighed as I turned to Quinn. The triplets were going to be the death of me. Why did they always show up in my life when I didn’t ask for them? What right did they have to ruin my life and reputation?
I could only imagine what Sammy was thinking of me at that moment and it wasn’t going to be a nice thought.
With the way Quinn was looking at me, flushed with anger and jealousy like a boyfriend who had caught me cheating on him, there was only one thing that Sammy would think of me.
It was ironic that I couldn’t chase off Sammy when I didn’t want to be with him and it was now that I was thinking of going out with him on a proper date that Quinn came and ruined everything for me, chasing him away.
I had to do damage control about this soon with the way Quinn had embarrassed the poor guy or he wasn’t ever going to talk to me again.
I turned to Sammy. “I’m sorry about this. My brother can be annoying at times.” I rushed out an apology to him.
Sammy looked relieved as he glanced at Quinn. “He is your brother?”
“Unfortunately, yes.” I sighed, rolling my eyes at Quinn.
He chuckled and seemed to relax at my words. I blew out a sigh of relief, feeling the tension go out of my spine. I was glad that I had been able to dispel the wrong atmosphere.
“I understand. I would have acted possessive if I had seen my younger sister with a man I didn’t know as well.”
Yes. That was how Quinn had acted but I didn’t think that I had given him or any of the brothers the right to do so. It was my life and I was old enough to act the way that I wanted especially with guys. I didn’t need them acting like brutes around whoever I chose to go out with.
As the sweet guy that Sammy was, he wasn’t going to leave it then and move away from us. He moved closer to Quinn and extended his hand for a shake.
“I’m Sammy.”
Quinn looked at the outstretched arm without blinking. I knew that expression and scowled at him. He didn’t seem like he was ready to make peace with Sammy. What was I thinking? I should have warned Sammy not to do that. Quinn wasn’t a guy who seemed interested in making peace with others.
He noticed the scowl on my face and took Sammy’s hands. “I’m Quinn.”
“Nice to meet you.” Sammy grinned.
“Do you mind, please? I need to speak to my sister.”
Sammy didn’t even take offense at the cold shoulder he just got. He shrugged and nodded, still smiling. I sighed. His kind was rare and I didn’t deserve to be with him, not with the way I was messed up in the head and didn’t know what I wanted.
“Of course.”
He turned to me. “See you later, Mia. I had a good time with you tonight.”
“Me too.” I said, jumping when I heard a growl from Quinn.
Sammy glanced at Quinn and then turned to me. “Your brother seems to be in a bad mood tonight.”
“He is always in a bad mood.” I said, partly true and also to lighten up the mood and not make Sammy feel bothered about his attitude.
“Oh!” Sammy’s eyes widened in understanding. He didn’t spare Quinn another glance again and wished me another good night.
I sighed as I watched him walk away to his apartment. This wasn’t the ending I had wanted for tonight. It wasn’t a date and I hadn’t been expecting us to part with a kiss but definitely not like this.
I turned to face Quinn, my hands folded on my chest and my eyes glinted with the annoyance I felt. He wasn’t the only one who knew how to be in a bad mood.
“Why are you here?” I snapped at him.
Before I could get the words out, he pulled me roughly by the hand and led me away to where his car was parked. I gasped as I had no choice but to follow him, unable to tear myself away from his firm grasp.
