Mia
The wedding was over. The newly married couple were on their honeymoon and everyone was back to their lives. I was back at work but the triplets weren’t back at work yet.
It seemed like they were still on a break from the mission that they had been on. It was almost two weeks and they weren’t back yet. They had to have been on one dangerous mission for them to be allowed to not report to work and all was well.
I shook my head. I wasn’t going to think of that. The thought always made me feel bad and I was too busy at the moment to wallow in guilt.
I missed my mum and wondered when she was going to be back. Albert hadn’t told us where he was taking her. He had said that it was a surprise and they would only be back when they were done with all the treats that he wanted to give to her.
I missed her and wanted to hear her voice but I couldn’t call her. I didn’t even know where she was at the moment and even if I knew, I felt bad about disturbing a couple on their honeymoon.
My phone rang and I jumped, my hands slacking off on the keypads of the computer I was working on. I was busy nowadays that others wondered what was going on with me. If only they knew that I was trying to overwhelm myself with tears so I wouldn’t have time to miss my mum.
I had barely kept in my tears as I hugged my mother and bade her goodbye after her wedding ceremony that night. They had gone immediately on their honeymoon trip after the event. The guests had all found their way back home or to the hotels they were lodged at after the ceremony as well.
I had also come back home that night to the house I had grown up in, immediately after the car that took my parents away left the house.
I couldn’t think of staying all alone at home with the brothers and I was still afraid of staying in the house because of the dark wizard.
Coincidentally, the wedding night was a full moon one and that made me run away more than anything else. I was so certain that I would have nightmares of the nightmares of the dark wizard if I stayed that I didn’t bother to test if my fears were valid or not.
I had gone back to the company apartment the next day and thrown myself into so much work that others wondered if I had gone off the rails.
I picked up my phone and smiled as I saw the caller ID. I didn’t know who it was but what I was looking at on my screen was a foreign contact. There was only one person that I could think of who could be calling me with that and I hoped that she was the one.
“Hello, my dear.”
I grinned as I heard my mum’s voice over the phone. I was so happy to see her that I squealed out in excitement and it wasn’t until people around me looked at me like I was crazy that I knew I ought to excuse myself and leave.
“Mum.”
“How are you doing?”
“I’m fine.” I grinned. “You?”
Even if I wasn’t fine, I was right now that I had heard her voice.
“I’m good.” She said and I could hear the smile in her voice.
“When are you going to be back?”
“Not anytime, my dear.” She chuckled. “Albert is something else. He has booked treats all over the world, at spectacular places and we are just at the second city.”
“How many are you going on? Did he eventually tell you?”
“He showed me a map and I think we have to go on eight trips.”
And they were still on the second trip? I let out a frustrated groan. It didn’t seem like they were going to be back anytime soon. “I miss you, mum.” I truly missed her.
She melted and cooed over the phone. “I miss you too, my darling.”
“Okay. Extend my regards to Albert.”
“You should start trying to call him dad now, dear. You know that would make him happy.”
“Yes, mum. I will try.” I told her.
I was going to try. I already thought of him as my dad but I was used to calling him Albert. After all, she knew that I had called him dad once and that wasn’t because I was trying to be a drama queen.
I had truly meant it. “Yes, mum. I promise. Tell dad I said hi to him.” I said, marveling at how smoothly the words came out of my mouth.
Maybe I could do this. Maybe I could call Albert dad and not feel weird about making dad feel jealous. I was sure dad would understand, I was just the only one fighting it.
Dad never minded about simple stuff like that, especially when it was to make other people happy. I could tell from mum’s voice that she was happy.
Albert was making her happy and it wouldn’t be a big deal to make him happy with what I said.
I didn’t think I wanted to tell mum about her husband and the secret in his house. She was so happy that I felt guilty about ruining it for her.
Maybe I didn’t have to tell her. I would find ways to protect her, without her knowing anything of what was going on.
“I miss you too, my dear.” She said. “We will be back soon, I promise. I will have Albert make the trips short.”
I chuckled. “Not at all, mum. I’m not a kid. Don’t stop having fun because of me. I will be fine.”
“Okay, darling.”
I smiled, glad that I had made the right decision. My mum didn’t want to come home soon as well. She had only said that because of me. She didn’t even ask if I meant what I had said.
I chuckled. “See you soon, mum.”
I ended the call and was on my way back to my office when I ran into Sammy, one of my male colleagues.
We exchanged greetings and I was about to move on when he called my name.
I turned back, surprised to hear him call me because he hardly spoke and I didn’t think I had any business with him.
“How may I help you, Sammy?” I smiled at him.
He was one of the coolheaded guys that I knew and I was certain that he wouldn’t have called me if there wasn’t any reason for that.
“What are you doing tomorrow night, Mia?”
Tomorrow night? That was a Friday. We were all given the benefit of going home to meet our family or hang out with friends. I didn’t have friends and I didn’t want to go home either since my parents weren’t there.
I shrugged. “Nothing much. I’m chilling at home.”
He smiled. “Good. Will you go out with me, Mia?”
I stared at him, stunned. I didn’t think he was going to ask me out again. We had gone out a few times when I started working here but the dates were boring because I wasn’t really invested in it.
I had started to avoid him, using work as an excuse till we drifted apart. Looking at him now with the hopeful expression on his face, I couldn’t deny to myself that he had known that I was there and followed after me. Maybe he had even been around while I had the call with mum, waiting for me to be done so he could make his move.
I was impressed by his tenacity. I had thought that he would have given up on me but it seemed like he was only bidding his time.
“Go out with me tomorrow night, Mia.” He repeated.
Dang. I groaned. I was a sucker for hopeful expressions. That was the triplets had needed to get me to say yes to going with them to that party.
I couldn’t bear to say no to Sammy and crush the hope in his eyes.
I sighed, forcing a smile on my face so it wouldn’t look like I hated the whole situation. “Okay.”
“Yes.” He whooped out in delight.
I smiled at his excitement but I hoped that I didn’t end up hating myself for my decision.
