Chapter 89
My half-sister.
Megan’s POV:
It is another morning to go about what I have for the day. I will have to see Jane because she asked to see me.
I wonder how urgent that is, because she had urgency in her voice.
But before I do that, I need to make myself, my usual cup of coffee, that my day will be productive… and I need to check up on Chris.
I have not heard from him since the party last night.
I got my coffee in one hand and scrolled through social media with the other, when the doorbell went off.
“A visitor?” I asked as I got up to see who was there.
I opened the door and there, I had the greatest shock of my life.
There was a woman standing at the door smiling who had the uncanniest resemblance with me. I took another look all over my body to pay attention to its details and this woman had everything.
It felt like I had a mirror standing in front of me.
“Hi!” I forced out and greeted.
“Hi, Megan!” She replied smiling.
“Megan!” I thought.
“That is not a business here, everyone knows who Megan is!” I thought.
“Can we talk?” She asked as she was begging.
“Yeah, yeah!” I would not even think it got a moment and I let her into the house.
“I am staring at a stranger, but it’s like looking into a mirror. This woman, this… twin, is identical to me. It’s uncanny, it’s surreal. I feel like I’m gazing into an alternate universe, a parallel life that could have been mine.” The thoughts ran through my head again as I watched her sit.
“So, what do you have to tell me?” I asked her.
“So, to start what is your name?” I asked her.
“I am Rachel, and I am here to tell you the truth about your life and probably mine!” She said and I stared for a while, and I asked her to go on.
“I’m your sister. Your twin sister. We were separated at birth, but I’ve been searching for you my whole life.” Rachel said as my mouth opened a jar and I could not understand what she said.
“I don’t know, but how is this possible? I do not understand. ” I asked her.
“Because how did it happen? Why are you showing up now? Why did our parents keep this from me? I am starting to feel like my whole life has been a lie, but I don’t want to believe this!” I told her.
“I know this is a lot to take in, but please try to understand. Our parents were young and struggling when we were born.” She explained.
“They made the difficult decision to give one of us up for adoption, and I was the one who was given away.” Rachel said and tears dropped out of her mind immediately.
“But why didn’t they tell me? Why did they keep this secret from me my whole life?” I asked.
“I do not know all the details, but I think they were trying to protect you. They didn’t want you to feel like you were missing out on something or someone.” She tried to persuade me.
“But for me, it’s always felt like a part of me was missing. I have been searching for you for years, hoping to find the other half of myself.” Rachel said.
“And you’re sure we’re twins? This isn’t some kind of crazy coincidence?” I was confused because the whole look and resemblance were convincing to a fault.
“I am positive. We have the same birthmark on our left shoulder, the same scar above our right eyebrow. We’re identical.” Rachel went on as she tried to convince me.
“We even share the same DNA, the same history. We’re two halves of the same whole.” She continued.
“How do you know about that?” I asked her.
“I have the results; I can show you if you want!” She told him.
“This is all so overwhelming. I don’t know what to think or feel. I need time to process this, to wrap my head around it.” I was devastated at once.
“I know it is a lot to take in. But I am here for you. We have a lot to catch up on, a lot to talk about. And I am not going anywhere. We are in this together now.” Rachel assures.
I told Chris everything, but I wondered why he was more interested and happier for me.
“What? That is amazing! How did you find out? I cannot believe this is happening! You are identical twins, separated at birth? That’s like something out of a movie!” Chris said in excitement.
“There is nothing exciting with that!” I told him.
“I mean, she showed up at my doorstep, and at first, I thought it was some kind of prank or a crazy coincidence.” I explained to him.
“But then we started talking, and I realized that we share the same birthday, the same birthmark, the same scar above our right eyebrow… it was like looking into a mirror.” I revealed.
“Wow, that’s incredible. How are you feeling about all of this? It must be overwhelming. I mean, your whole life, you thought you were an only child, and then suddenly, you have a twin sister. That’s a lot to take in.” Chris said.
“It’s like my whole life has been turned upside down. I don’t know what to think or feel. But at the same time, it’s like I’ve found a missing piece of myself. We’re getting to know each other, and it’s like we’re two halves of the same whole.” I said.
“That’s amazing. I’m so happy for you. This is a life-changing moment. You must have so many questions for her. Do you know why you were separated at birth? Did your parents give her up for adoption or something?” Chris questioned.
“Yeah, that’s what we’re trying to figure out. We’re trying to piece together our family’s history and understand why this happened. It’s not easy, but we’re working through it together.” I explained.
“I can imagine. Well, I’m sure you’ll learn more about each other as you spend more time together. This is an incredible opportunity for both of you. You’re getting a second chance at a relationship that was taken away from you at birth. That’s a gift, you know?” Chris said.
“Thanks, that means a lot to me. Just having you here to talk to is helping me process all of this. It’s a lot to take in, but I’m grateful to have your support.” I added.
