Chapter 90
The reveal.
Megan’s POV:
Jane walks up to me at work and looked like she was in her panicking mode.
“Did she show up in your house?” Jane questioned which left me wondering who she was talking about, because I felt it definitely was not about Rachel.
“Where did she go?” Jane asked me again.
“Who are you talking about Jane and why do you look so restless?” I asked her.
“That is not the point now!” Jane told me.
“Okay! Fine!” I agreed finally.
“My twin sister showed up at the house this morning!” I told her.
“Your twin sister, Megan?” Jane asked me.
“You barely know nothing about her, and you are referring to her as your twin sister!” Jane scoffed.
“Jane!” I called.
“What do you know about this?” I asked her.
“That was the exact reason why I wanted to see you Megan, but you should not be hanging about that woman.” She told me.
“Why?” I questioned.
“So, you know about her all this time, but you did not tell me anything about her?” I asked her.
“Why?” I felt extremely betrayed at this point.
“You knew about my twin sister and didn’t tell me! How could you keep this from me? We are more than best friends now, I see you like how a mother, we share everything with each other. How could you keep something so huge from me?” I cried.
“I’m so sorry. I wanted to tell you, but I wasn’t sure how you would react. I didn’t want to hurt you or disrupt your life. I was trying to protect you.” Jane pleaded with me.
“Protect me? From what? The truth? You are the one who’s been lying to me for who knows how long! I thought we had a real friendship. But now I’m not so sure.” I told her.
“I was trying to spare you the shock and confusion that comes with discovering a long-lost twin. I didn’t want to be the one to shake up your life like that.”
“Besides, she has a medical condition which could harm your career in a way!” Jane revealed.
“So how do you know about all of these?” I asked her.
“Hmm, Megan!” Jane sighed.
“I am your aunt, Jane!” Jane revealed and my jar almost dropped.
“Wow!” I exclaimed.
“My whole life is a lie! You knew that I had a twin sister, and you didn’t tell me and now, you are my aunt?” I asked her.
“That’s a huge secret to keep from someone. I do not know if I can ever trust you again. How could you do this to me?” I said.
“I know I made a mistake. But please try to see it from my perspective. I was trying to be a good friend and family member, even if it meant keeping a secret from you. I did not mean to hurt you or betray your trust.” Jane begged me.
“A good friend? You call this being a good family member? I do not know if we can ever go back to the way things were before. I need some time to think about this, to process everything. I need some space.” I told her and left.
“I understand. I’ll give you all the space you need. But please know that I’m here for you, and I want to support you through this. We can get through this together, if you will let me.” Jane said as I took my leave.
I felt devastated that such a thing should be happening to me.
I never knew that I had family around here after I lived on the streets for years after my parents’ death.
Now, this woman shows up from nowhere and says that she is my twin and Jane my aunt.
Oh my God!
I think jane has a lot of questions to answer.
She needs to tell me what happened and why it all turned out this way.
“Jane! We need to talk!” I told her.
“I need answers!” I said.
“Jane, I can’t believe it. You are my aunt? How could you keep this from me? My whole life, I thought you were just a friend!” I told her.
“I never knew you were even family.” I said.
“You are my aunt, and my mother is my biological mother? This is too much to take in. I feel like my whole life has been turned upside down.” I said almost sobbing.
“Megan, I am so sorry. I wanted to tell you, but I did not know how. Your mother made me promise not to reveal the truth until the right time. She wanted to protect you from the truth, from the secrets and the lies. She was trying to shield you from the pain of her mistakes.” Jane explained.
“Protect me? You call this protection? You both have been lying to me my whole life. I feel like my whole life has been a lie. Everything I thought I knew about myself is a lie. My parents, my family, my identity it’s all a lie.” I yelled.
“Megan, please understand. We were trying to protect you from the pain and the hurt. Your mother could not raise you herself, she was not ready, and I was the only one who could take care of you.” Jane kept on saying.
“I promised her I would keep the secret, and I did. I know it was wrong, but I did it out of love for you and your mother.” She added.
“But why? Why did you keep this secret from me? Why did you let me believe that my whole life was one way, when it was really another?”
“I don’t know who I am anymore. I don’t know what’s real and what’s not. I feel like I am living in a dream, a dream that’s been constructed by you and my mother.”
“Megan, I know this is hard for you, but please try to understand. We did it out of love, out of a desire to protect you. We didn’t mean to hurt you; we didn’t mean to lie to you. We just wanted what was best for you. Your mother will explain everything, I promise.” Jane said.
“Explain everything? How can she explain this? How can she explain lying to me my whole life? How can she explain keeping the truth from me? I don’t know if I can ever trust you again, Jane. I don’t know if I can ever trust anyone again.” I asked Jane.
“Please, you do not have to be like this, Megan!” Jane continued pleading.
“Fine!” I said.
“I will want to see my parents!” I revealed to her.
“No, no!” Jane said.
“I don’t think you want to do that!” She said.
“When you are ready, you know where to find me!” I revealed.
