Robert and Sophie looked towards Rachel, only to find that her cheeks were flame red. They asked with concern, “It’s so cold now. You seem on a fever. Are you all right?”
“If you feel uncomfortable, just tell us. The flu has been more serious recently.”
“Shall we call the doctor?”
Rachel hurriedly waved her hand to refuse. “No, thanks. Really! I don’t need a doctor. I just did some vigorous exercise earlier in my room. I’ll be fine soon.”
Hearing this excuse, Ewan showed a faint smile, his eyes softened when she stared at Rachel’s adorable look.
Mason seemed to smell something fishy. He was silent. Observing Rachel’s facial expression and then looking at his younger brother, a bad premonition spread on his mind.
From the beginning of lunch till the end, Rachel didn’t raise her head at all. She ate while keeping her head down.
The blush on her cheeks slowly faded.
In the afternoon, Rachel rushed back to the training camp. Because of her argument with Ewan in the morning, she had missed classes for a half day.
She received punishments for that. After all, it was formal military training.
The afternoon class schedule was quite tight, including law, simulated investigation, psychology, and physical training. When the classes ended, Rachel was worn out, not to mention that she also had to take the punishment.
When she was finally dismissed from the training camp, it was already dark.
Rachel dragged her exhausted legs along the bustling street. The neon lights were dazzling, and the traffic was heavy. She walked to the street stalls while turning on her mobile phone.
As soon as the phone was turned on, two missed calls immediately popped out on the screen.
One was from Ewan. When Rachel saw the caller ID, her heart missed one beat, and her heartbeat accelerated. She called back without any hesitation.
Over the years, she had never received any message or phone call from him.
Ewan’s number saved in her mobile phone was secretly changed by someone. Hence, she could never get through when calling him.
But her number saved in Ewan’s phone should always be there. It was just that he didn’t want to contact her for the past ten years.
Therefore, this missed call from him seemed so rare and precious at this moment.
Rachel listened to the beeps, her heartbeat speeding up.
Ewan’s masculine, charming voice came from the phone. “Rachel, where are you now?”
Rachel answered gently, “I’m outside.”
He asked in a stern tone but with concern, “Why did you shut down the phone earlier?”
“Because… because it was dead.”
“You’re not a good liar.” Ewan immediately caught her in a lie.
Rachel smiled helplessly, not knowing how to answer him. She wasn’t a good liar indeed, but she had to tell lies from time to time.
Even most of her lies were white lies; sometimes she had no choice but to do it.
“Send me your location. I’ll pick you up.”
Hearing the request, Rachel was stunned, flattered.
Ewan didn’t only call her, but also would come to pick her up.
Was he afraid that she would ask to divorce him again, so he wanted to treat her better? Or was it because he really had fallen in love with her?
She even suspected he had been planning something behind this.
But no matter what, she had thought it through. She would let herself be willful this once, making a bet for the last chance in her life. If she lost, it would only ruin her life, which she never cherished.
“I’m near CX Police College…” Rachel said to him, but her voice stopped abruptly. She stopped walking suddenly, and her body stiffened. She calmly looked ahead.
On the brightly-lit street, a figure she knew so well was standing in her way.
That was the only friend of hers who knew that she had applied for being an auxiliary police. It was Sienna.
She wore an elegant and pretty purple dress with a white-fur coat. She looked quite noble and generous. With a slight smile on her face, she greeted Rachel warmly, “Good evening, Rachel.”
Rachel didn’t answer Sienna right away. She reacted slowly and continued to talk on the phone, “You don’t need to pick me up now. I have something urgent to deal with. Bye!”
Then she hung it up nervously.
“Who is coming to pick you up?” Sienna asked with a sweet smile.
Rachel put the phone in her pocket. “It’s Mason.”
“Is Mason back?”
“Yeah.”
“It seems that Mason still hasn’t changed. He dotes on you as always. He truly likes you.”
Rachel was silent.
Now she had to live in lies all day long, which made her extremely tired.
Sienna also kept silent for a moment. Then she continued, “Rachel, I came here to wait for you specially. Let’s find a place to have a talk, shall we?”
“Sure.”
“There’s a nice cafe in front. Let’s go over there.”
Rachel slowly looked forward.
She felt too tired mentally to keep walking, but there was something that she must face.
It was a high-end cafe where they went to.
The decoration in the cafe was elegant. The melodious sound from the piano was lingering in the fragrant air.
They chose a relatively quiet corner. The dim yellow light warmed up the surrounding area, and there was a touch of warmth in the dimness.
Talking with friends in this kind of place was really cozy.
They ordered two cups of fragrant coffee latte. Taking a few sips, they enjoyed it in silence.
The ambience between them froze for a while. Neither spoke.
After a moment, Sienna broke the ice. With a bitter smile, she asked, “How are you and Ewan recently?”
Rachel picked up her mug, took another sip to adjust her mood. Then she slowly answered, “I’m sorry, Sienna. I’ve worked hard and tried many ways. Ewan refused to divorce. He’s super determined.”
Sienna was taken aback first and quickly recovered. Seemingly indifferent with a faint smile, she said, “It should be because we don’t know about his plan. You should try harder.”
“I can’t,” Rachel summoned the courage to refuse her directly. “He said such cruel words last time, and it doesn’t make sense for me to keep trying.”
Sienna was so nervous that her hands grabbed the table edge tightly. “What did he say?”
Rachel quieted down for a few seconds and looked at her, overwhelmed. “He said, ‘Don’t ever think about divorce. Only death could separate us.'”
Sienna was totally stunned when she heard those words.
Rachel looked at her guiltily, reached out to hold her hand, and muttered, “I’m sorry, Sienna. This is a fact that I can’t change.”
“Then what about me?” Sienna withdrew her hand and put it under the table. She clenched her fists slightly, her nails sinking into the flesh of her palms, her eyes becoming cold.
Rachel was silent.
“You promised me, but now you told me you can’t do it.”
Rachel didn’t know how to reply.
“Rachel White, how can you be so selfish? That man was my fiancé. He’s your elder brother, and is the man of your bestie. You just simply stole him from me. Do you still have any conscience? Is that the way how you treat your bestie?” Sienna blamed her furiously, gradually becoming more and more emotional. She spoke louder and louder, with a slight choking.
Besides being guilty and ashamed, Rachel could only say, “I’m sorry, Sienna.”
“I don’t want your apologies. I just hope you return Ewan to me.” Sienna’s tears flowed out, and her shoulders trembled slightly with anger.
Rachel took a deep breath. Her heart was no longer softened. She said in a flat tone, “If he loves you, he would definitely marry you. But it’s he who keeps me from letting go. Do you think he would really marry you even if we finally have divorced?”
Sienna’s face suddenly changed. She asked fiercely, “What do you mean?”
