Chapter 9 Smiling is Uglier than Crying

Book:The Surging Of Love Published:2024-5-1

Rachel forced a smile and remained silent.
Sienna leaned over to her and whispered, “Actually Rachel, it’s pretty easy to conquer a man. All men have lust for women. Even a righteous man like Ewan…”
Rachel stood up out of the blue. She would literally lose her mind if she kept listening. “I suddenly recall that I still have something important to deal with. Be my guest and help yourself. I’ll be busy for a while.”
She turned on the laptop while sitting in front of it.
Sienna pouted while she slowly zipping her bag, “Well, I will leave you be. Let’s talk about it when you are free.”
“Sure.” Rachel pretended to be busy and said. Meanwhile she was typing on the keyboard and staring at the screen seriously.
“Bye.” Sienna waved at her.
“Bye!”
The second the door was shut, Rachel looked like a computer that just had been unplugged, shutting down instantly.
She leaned on the back of the chair, hands sliding off the keyboard, her eyes were dull while looking at the screen.
The sun was shining bright outside, but she couldn’t feel any warmth in the room.
Her heart was like a wound being sprinkled with salt, the pain was penetrating her bones.
She reached out and wiped out her cheeks when she felt the coldness on her face, only to realized that it was tears that were dripping down.
Rachel didn’t step out of the room once on this day.
The next morning.
Just before dawn, Rachel got up, washed her face and put on casual clothes. She was planning to use her time-off to look into her mother’s case.
The spacious living room was quiet. Rachel walked downstairs with her bag and suddenly heard calm but powerful footsteps.
The footsteps unlike ordinary people, but like soldiers who have been trained for years. She sped up her pace and went downstairs. At the corner, she saw two men in military uniform entering the study on the first floor.
Why did Ewan Hill’s subordinates come to his house?
Rachel was puzzled. She had a gut feeling that it was something related to her mother. Driven by curiosity, she slowed down her steps and walked to the study.
The door was half open, and the voice of a man reporting vaguely came from inside, “Andrew Harris has been redeemed.”
“Did you find out who did it?” Ewan said in a low voice.
“It was in the name of your family, The Hill Group. He has already returned to his job today.”
“Who supported him?”
“It should be your grandfather.”
Ewan was silent.
The study suddenly quieted down.
Rachel had a creepy feeling after listening quietly.
Andrew Harris was the man who almost raped her on the ship. The most terrifying thing was that the Hills were probably behind all this.
Rachel was sure that grandpa would never do something like this so she must find out what was hidden from her.
“Rachel.”
A cold female voice shocked Rachel and made her look for where it came from.
It was Sienna Parker’s sister, Erica Parker. She married Ewan’s brother five years ago. They had a son.
“Good morning.” Rachel turned around and moved towards the wall while she greeted her awkwardly.
Erica dressed up gracefully and luxuriously with a limited-edition handbag in her hand. Her look and manner looked just like a rich lady. “Why are you sneaking at the study so early in the morning? That’s not a moral thing to do!” She scolded her like a parent.
Rachel was speechless. But she wasn’t thinking about moral. It was Andrew Harris, the director of the film and television company under the Hill’s Group.
It just so happened that Erica was in charge of that company.
Rachel walked towards Erica while she was putting on her shoes, “Erica, do you know a staff of your company called Andrew Harris? Can I go to the company with you…”
Before she could finish, a force suddenly came from behind, grabbing her arm and slammed her backwards.
She was tripped.
Rachel was thrown heavily on the sofa. She raised her head astonishingly, a shadow pressed her to the sofa.
She was so frightened that she clung to the sofa, holding her chest with her hands. She saw Ewan’s good-looking face and he looked indifferent and condescending.
He put his hands around her head, looking her in the eyes from a higher position.
Erica was done putting on her shoes and looked back at the living room. She wasn’t interested in it at all, so she went out disdainfully.
“Ewan…” Rachel’s voice trembled nervously. Although the man was handsome, his facial expression was terrifying. It seemed that the look in his eyes could kill people.
“Don’t interfere with Andrew Harris’s affairs. Leave the man alone whenever you see him.” Ewan said word by word.
“But…”
“This is an order.” Ewan interrupted Rachel, she took a deep breath without moving an inch.
I am not your subordinate. Rachel muttered in her mind.
Ewan frowned, his eyes darkened a bit, commanded in a cold tone, “I will handle your mother’s case. Behave yourself.”
Rachel pursed her lips, her breath was filled with masculinity. It was difficult to breathe so she nodded weakly to respond him.
Ewan stood up straight and took a step back. He put one hand in the pocket and raised the other one to point.
The subordinate standing next to him handed him two pieces of blank paper right away.
Ewan took the paper, handed it to Rachel, said in a cold tone, “Sign and handprint on it.
“Sign it?” Rachel slowly took the paper, confused.
“It’s the condition to save your mother.”
Rachel couldn’t help but forced a smile while looking at the paper. How could he ask her to sign a contract without any content?
It crossed her line. He should have at least let her know something.
“What if I refuse to sign?” After staring at the paper for a while, Rachel asked.
Ewan smiled frivolously, said in an extremely low voice, “Your mother’s innocence is in your hands. Choose yourself.”
Rachel smiled bitterly and raised her head slowly. She saw his eyes filled with coldness, tears were flickering in her eyes. “You didn’t care about my mother when you investigate the murder of Eve Wright at the beginning. And now you set me up with such an inhumane contract in exchange. I think you went too far.” Rachel said while forcing a smile.
Ewan looked upset. He could see the tears rolling down her cheek.
His fingers couldn’t help but tremble. He tried to stay calm and put his hands in his pants’ pockets.
Rachel lowered her head and wiped the tears. She didn’t want him to see her cry. “You are the most terrifying evil soldier I have ever seen.” She muttered with a choked voice.
But Rachel White was a woman of her words. She gritted her teeth and searched for a pen in her bag.
“Please use this one, Ms. White.” Bently Ramos who was standing nearby handed over a pen and a hand mask right away.
Rachel paused and looked up at Bently. She remembered the man. He was Ewan’s subordinate.
She signed and printed her fingerprints without hesitance after taking the pen in Bently’s hand.
She brought her life to the unknown darkness within ten seconds.
Rachel gave Bently the paper after signing her name. She picked up her bag and left without lifting her head.
For the first time in 25 years, she found Ewan Hill so annoying. She didn’t even want to look at him.
Ewan froze and stared at her back as she was leaving.
“Ms. White has signed everything, Master Ewan.” Bently said as he bowed.
“Did you hear what she just said?” Ewan didn’t ask until Rachel was gone, while he forced a smile.
Neither Dane French nor Bently dared to say a word because they both heard it.
“I am the most terrifying evil she has ever seen.” He answered himself.
He couldn’t help but laugh after saying it.
It was just that his laughing was uglier than crying.
