CHAPTER 45
Jackson slides his hands into his pocket.
“Don’t think much about it. Since the elders have been executed. Can you make up your mind now about becoming the true Alpha?” Jackson asked and Emma looked away.
“I said I would give it some thought so don’t force me into it,” Emma said seriously.
“Do you think all packs will be safe now that the elders have been executed? If you don’t accept to be crowned the true Alpha. The lives of everyone are in danger. The elders of the grand hall are solely the reason, the twelve reigns are safe from all external enemies. You should know that by now since you know much about the grand hall’s history” Jackson said calmly.
Emma walked to the window without uttering a word.
“What’s your support as the Luna of the grey pack? Alpha Devon is powerful and brave but do you think he will be able to conquer all external enemies? Alpha Devon isn’t the same as in the past, he has a family to protect now and which means he has so many weak points now. And that’s why you’re the perfect candidate to be the true Alpha. You will protect your family and the lives of everyone. It’s been decades since the twelve reigns experienced change and that’s why killing has been constant but you can change that. After all, we’re all fighting for the same purpose and that’s peace” Jackson said and Emma turned to him.
“Peace?” Emma repeated.
“Exactly. You must find it strange seeing me here but I’ve always been on your side. You have no idea how thrilled I was when I found out you were the chosen one. You’ve helped make the grey pack a progressive habitat. Imagine how much change you will bring to the twelve packs if you become the true Alpha. You can’t be selfish about your choice” Jackson tried to convince.
“I’m not being selfish, I’m only being cautious. This might bring harm or good to me so it’s only proper I take my time in making a decision. Yes, the elders have been executed but that doesn’t mean the whole pack will be put in danger. We’ve all got forces protecting us so don’t sound weak in front of me, that’s so not like you Jackson” Emma said seriously and Jackson raised one of his eyebrows as he heard Emma call his name.
“You called me Jackson? It sounded so familiar, have we met before?” Jackson asked and Emma looked at him confused.
“I don’t think so and Jackson is your name so of course, that’s what I should refer you to right?” Emma said and Jackson smiled.
“Take your time about coming up to a decision okay? We’re all eager to hear your feedback” Jackson said politely and Devon walked into the study.
“What are you doing here?” Alpha Devon asked seriously.
“I will take my leave now, Milady” Alpha Jackson said as he ignored Devon’s questions.
Jackson glared at him and then brushed his shoulders as he walked away.
“Emma, what did he say to you?” Devon asked curiously.
“You know the answer to that question so why are you asking? I had no idea that he was coming and it’s strange enough that his visit was approved by me and I don’t remember doing so” Emma said frustratedly.
Alpha Devon walked closer to her.
“Have you made up your mind about the whole true Alpha thing?” Alpha Devon asked in a low tone.
Emma hesitated before answering and Alpha Jackson’s words rang in her head.
“Yes, I’ve decided to accept it. I will be the true Alpha, after all, that’s the only way I can be able to protect everyone” Emma said with full determination and Devon clenched his fist as he looked away.
“What changed your mind? Early hours of today, you had no thought of accepting the position”
“I’ve had it in mind all day so it’s only natural I came up with a decision quickly,” Emma said.
“I heard the elders have been executed. Does Jackson have a hand in it?” Devon asked coldly.
“That’s exactly what I heard and just as we waited for. Someone else did it for us” Emma said with a smile.
“Are you sure you’ve thought the whole thing through? Do you have any idea what goes on there?” Alpha Devon asked with a blank expression.
“Devon, what’s wrong? Why are you sounding cold?” Emma asked slowly.
“Jackson had something to do with your change of heart but is he that trustworthy for you to change your mind easily,” Devon said.
“I didn’t just make this decision because Jackson spoke to me. You also told me, I deserved to be a true Alpha so why are you sounding so hypocritical? You also want me to accept the position” Emma said raising her voice.
“I only said that because…” Devon stuttered.
“Because of what?” Emma yelled.
“You’ve made up your mind already so there’s no use talking to you about it. Suit yourself” Alpha Devon said seriously then walked out of the study.
“Devon we’re not done talking?” Emma said seriously as she went after him but Emma bumped into Charlotte on her way out.
“Devon” Emma called out loudly but Alpha Devon ignored her as he walked away.
“Emma is everything okay? Did the both of getting into a fight?” Charlotte asked curiously and Emma groaned then went back into her study and Charlotte followed.
“We’ve both lived for almost two decades and I still don’t understand him at all. He agreed on making me the next true Alpha and now he’s acting all suspicious on hearing my decision of taking the position” Emma said fuming.
“Let’s sit first,” Charlotte said and they sat down.
“You need to calm down. The alpha isn’t that twisted-minded. You should think about this in a different direction. Why do you think the alpha is suddenly upset about your decision? You and I know so well that the alpha is way too sensible to be messed with and he’s probably trying to figure something out and now you made this decision” Charlotte explained and Emma clenched her fist and stood up.
“Well, I don’t care. If he’s trying to figure something out then he should have shared it with me after all I’m his Luna and two heads are better than one. He can’t be this reckless now when the grand hall has been completely left empty. Lots of lives are lying on the ground. I can’t put the lives of everyone in danger all in the name of not being confident enough to fulfil my destiny” Emma said seriously.
“Emma, how about you move your announcement to a few more days?” Charlotte requested and Emma glanced at Charlotte with cold eyes.
“If we have that much time left then I wouldn’t have made up my mind about this and I’m not letting anything stop my course of existence. If Devon will play it this way then I’m not stopping him but I’m not changing my mind” Emma said seriously.
“Emma, why are you being in a haste? Everyone will be safe even without your help so don’t be hasty” Charlotte forewarned.
“If thinking about other’s safety, is being hasty then I’m in a haste. I will be making my announcement tomorrow” Emma said bluntly.
“I heard of Alpha Jackson’s visit. Why would you trust his words so blindly? If he’s that brilliant then the Crust pack would be one of the greatest packs. You should put some thought into this. I smell something fishy”
“If there’s something fishy going on then everyone’s involved including Devon because everyone looks suspicious. Charlotte I’m not doing this just for me. I want to help Devon as well as everyone in need of my help out there”
“Emma, you’re about to be thrown into the lion’s den. The responsibilities of the grand hall are greater than you think and you will have to stay away from home just to keep everything in place. How’s that helping others when you’re jeopardising your freedom and happiness just to help those cunning and suspicious alphas who wouldn’t even appreciate your efforts” Charlotte said.
“Charlotte you don’t get it. I also find them suspicious and cunning and they plan on using me as bait to gain their greedy desires but I won’t let that happen and that’s why I’m willing to risk it all as long as this whole corruption ends” Emma said seriously.
“I don’t get you at all. Are you on our side or their side? You complicate things even more” Charlotte said and stood up.
****
Alpha Devon went into his chambers and screamed angrily.
“Ahhhh!” He howled and Kent came into the room.
“Is it that serious? You’ve had a lot on your mind lately. I get it that you feel bad and guilty for Emma but this isn’t any way of convincing anyone” Kent said and Devon glared at him.
“You shouldn’t be taking her side on this. I know exactly what I’m trying to avoid but she’s way too dense to even notice what I’m trying to say” Devon said seriously.
“Should I put an eye on Jackson and the rest of them?” Kent asked coldly.
“You don’t have to. Everything has been going pretty well just before Jackson got involved. Why did he handle the execution all by himself, it was decided to be taken care of by all the alphas” Devon uttered seriously.
“Do you think he’s trying to keep a good impression?” Kent asked and Devon gazed at a space.
“But about what exactly? He completely brainwashed Emma and that’s why she thought of becoming the true Alpha. Is he sending her out to the battlefield without any weapons? What’re his intentions exactly?” Devon questioned.
“He has been on a low profile for so many years but why is he suddenly trying to come up to the surface again? And this time, his target is the grey pack. He’s not possibly thinking of avenging the death of his Luna?” Kent said and Devon waved it.
“I’ve never puzzled over something like this. First, of all, why was my birthright missing? How did Emma and I end up having a wolf fang dagger as a birthright” Devon uttered in a low tone and Kent looked at him?
“It’s Emma’s birthright so we’re not eligible to be suspicious of her and she has proof right in her hands but you don’t have yours. I guess this fight has been prepared for a long time. If Emma accepts to be the true Alpha then the both of you will have to be enemies because of the history and you’re too strong of an encounter with her. She might not want things to work that way but she will be under lots of pressure and she’s way too softhearted to ignore a general plea” Kent said and Devon clenched his fist.
“She’s stubborn as well. She won’t be renouncing what she said to me. She must have read some sense in Jackson’s words to her. Or then, thinking of their motives. I will give them exactly what they want because there’s only one reason why Jackson came here today and that’s because they’re not happy about my approval of Emma’s position. They all know me too well, I can’t let harm come to Emma” Alpha Devon said seriously.
“What do you have in mind?” Kent asked curiously.
“I’m way too smart to be used so easily. Emma might fall into their trap but I will protect her from behind. Protecting her won’t be important but I’ve got something in mind. First of all, Kent you have to go in search of my uncle the seer. I think he has a big role to play in this” Devon said seriously.
“It’s been decades, who knows if he’s still alive. I will get to it immediately” Kent said and left the chambers.
Alpha Devon clenched his two fists angrily.
“I have no idea where exactly things went wrong. Nothing makes sense anymore” Alpha Devon said almost in a whisper gazing at space.
