CHAPTER 40
Quietness swept the room as everyone waited for alpha Devon’s response.
Grayson cleared his throat to break the silence.
“Why should I?” Alpha Devon asked coldly and Grayson fidgeted.
“I have a daughter and she’s the same age as your son. I know we’ve had a rough patch in the past but it’s all in the past. The only way I can think of to mend things is for our children’s alliance” Grayson uttered and Devon relaxed.
“You don’t even know my son and you wish to make him your son-in-law, why?” Devon asked.
“Because he’s Emma’s son since I couldn’t have her. My daughter can have her son” Grayson said boldly and Devon boost into awkward laughter.
“What the nerve to say that right at my face? For your disgusting reasons just consider this visit void,” Devon said as he clenched his fist and then stood up.
“You wouldn’t even consider my request because I’m weak. You look down on me because of my weakness but just so you know, regardless of my weakness. Silver lake pack is one of the strongest and most powerful packs. Don’t underestimate my abilities” Grayson said seriously.
“And who said I’m underestimating your abilities? For the fact that you still think of my woman romantically, I won’t take that” Devon said seriously.
“You sound so petty. Why do you care about what I feel? You’ve got her all to yourself and you still feel insecure, should I be happy about that”
“Kent let’s go,” Devon said.
“Why are you leaving? That’s so unprofessional. We’re not done talking yet” Grayson cut in.
“What’s left to discuss? You’ve said it all and I declined obviously”
“Have a seat and let’s talk like rulers?” Grayson said and Kent signalled Devon to please sit down.
“You shouldn’t jump into putting your daughter into something you might end up regretting. If you wish to join forces or hands with the grey pack then wait till the grand meeting. I don’t wish to rub my name in the mud all in the name of the alliance. I’m not agreeing to something I’m not sure of. Your daughter also needs to be qualified to be a part of the grey pack not just grey pack but a part of my family” Alpha Devon said.
“When you meet with her, I’m pretty sure I will be selective and choosey” Grayson smiled.
“Seeing is believing and I believe I will see her at the grand hall”
“She doesn’t attend stuff like that” Max cut in and Devon smirked.
“Oh I see, I’m picking out flaws already,” Devon said.
“If you see it that way then I’ve got lots of flaws to pick out from your son”
“I don’t mind since you called me here just to make my son your son-in-law. Whatever flaws he has is forgiven” Devon said.
“Why do you wish to join forces with Grey pack out of the blue? We all know you’re only using alliance as an excuse to get to us” Kent cut in and Grayson glanced at him.
“And I guess that’s why I’m not bulging” Devon added.
“Silvia keeps getting a proposal from untrustworthy sources and it seems like I’m being pressurised to accept and being a single father isn’t adding any positive response on her path” Grayson explained.
“I heard you lost your Luna years back. Proposals aren’t supposed to be forced on you. You have the right to decline them. Your daughter is only sixteen and she will be crossing paths with her mate soon. Don’t rush things” Alpha Devon advised.
“If she gets betrothed to your son. That will strengthen her stand in the grand hall. Silvia can’t survive with just me alone. She needs external support” Grayson uttered.
“I don’t wish to push my son into doing what my father did so I advise you don’t do the same to your daughter. If you wish to join forces with us then get the kids out of this. Let us adults handle it” Devon said.
“What help can I offer at my current state? I need to keep my daughter in safer hands and I believe making her a part of the grey pack will be beneficial to her”
“A few minutes ago you told me I was underestimating you but right now, you’re the one doing that to yourself. You think so little of yourself and your daughter is no longer a child, why do you wish to hand her over to someone else when she can be of great help to you? If she’s as great as you said, you shouldn’t underestimate her. Except there’s something you’re not telling me” Devon said with a blank expression.
“I wish to protect her with everything I have and that’s the way I let go of my ego to speak with you about this. You also have a child, you wouldn’t want anything to happen to him if you feel danger close by and that’s what I’m trying to do”
Alpha Devon bites his lower lip with thoughts going through his mind.
“I don’t wish to discuss betrothal anymore. Basil will find his mate just like I found mine. I don’t wish to sound heartless but I get very rational when my son is involved” Alpha Devon said.
“I completely understand. I hope when next we meet, you have a change of heart. The guards will escort you to your rooms” Grayson said as he stood up slowly.
“Thanks for the hospitality,” Kent said as they stood up.
They went out of the meeting room.
Silvia ran past them in a hurry as she chased after a pub.
“Silvia come say hello” Grayson screamed but Silvia waved without even looking back as she ran.
“Quite feisty,” Devon said with a half smile.
“She doesn’t really like visitors and that’s why she didn’t pay much attention”
“It’s okay. She will be attending the grand hall and I do not doubt that” Alpha Devon said and left the guards.
“Kent I will love to have a word” Max uttered and Kent turned around.
“Go ahead, sire,” Kent said and Devon nodded then walked away.
Max and Kent went out of the pack house.
“Why did you call me out? Do you have anything important to share with me? As you can see I’m very busy” Kent said sarcastically.
“We’re all grown up but that nasty attitude of yours remains” Max scorned.
“Go straight to the point”
“How’s Charlotte doing?” Max asked slowly and Kent glared at him.
“Now I see, why the first letter of the silver pack started with S. Shameless. Charlotte and I are married now, why do you still care? Is that the reason you still haven’t gotten yourself a she-wolf?” Kent mocked.
“I’m waiting for the day, she will realize I’m way better than you and why do have tabs on me? Do I make you feel insecure? Just so you know, Charlotte liked me when she was here. We would have had so many pubs now if it wasn’t for you” Max said with a frown.
“You’re way too old to make a complaint about the past. You should move on with your life. Charlotte wouldn’t even come to you even if you begged her to. Why did you call me out here?” Kent asked seriously.
“Alpha Grayson couldn’t say much because he believed the alpha knew where he was driving at. Kent we’ve been sworn enemies for years but I’m laying all that aside to ask this of you. I will appreciate it if you convinced the alpha to think about our conversation today. Silvia is a female and Grayson doesn’t want her to live a hard life by looking for and ruling over the silver pack. He doesn’t wish to place such a burden on Silvia’s shoulders. It’s not wrong for a father to think that way for their children and he’s more scared about the prophecy repeating itself” Max explained.
“I can’t be able to talk the alpha out of this if he has made up his mind but the only way to make him reason things is for him to meet Silvia himself and witness the kind of potential she has. I guess alpha Grayson knew this as well but if he’s in desperate need of a son-in-law, he should come to speak with me. I have a son as well and he’s not hardheaded but I know for sure, he will decline though” Kent laughed.
“What’s wrong with this generation? They decline decisions made by their parents and elders. When we were growing we had no right to decline decisions made for us. I guess this is one of the benefits of not having any” Max said with a smile.
“Don’t say things like that. I know deep down, you wish you had a son with Charlotte instead. I can read it all on your forehead so don’t feign ignorantly” Kent scoffed.
“You’ve stolen her away from me. Am I supposed to boost into tears and make it so obvious that I feel terrible for my decisions in the past” Max yelled and Kent tapped his shoulders.
“Well, that’s a burden you will have to carry alone. I will retire to my room now” Kent said and went back into the pack house.
****
A few days later…
Everyone has arrived at the grand hall crescent.
Alpha Devon arrived at the grand hall with Kent and Basil next to him. They stood at the entrance for a while.
“What do you think about this place?” Kent asked Basil.
Basil looked around with no expression written on his face.
“You’re quiet. Does that mean this place is worth all your training?” Kent teased and Basil scoffed.
“Of course not. There’s no way, the looks of this place will cover up for the massive training I went through” Basil said defiantly and Devon chuckled lightly.
“Well, you’ve got a test of what it feels like to be a royal. You don’t intend to represent our pack with those sloppy abilities of yours. I’m hoping you don’t end up disgracing yourself in front of your mates. This is no place for you to be a braggart. Everyone here is of high class and rank” Devon said sarcastically and Basil rolled his eyes.
“I would have loved it if mother came with me instead. Father, was grandfather this hard on you?” Basil asked out of the blue and Devon looked at him.
“What do you mean?” Devon asked.
“Well, I heard grandfather carried you like a moon goddess when he brought you here for the first time. Your mates didn’t even get the opportunity to get anywhere close to you. They all felt threatened only staying in the same space as you”
“That’s because I worked for it and whatever you heard was a lie. I was also sixteen when I first came here but I was way too powerful. I didn’t keep room for intimidation. Although I saw them do it to others” Devon said then had a glance at his cellphone.
“Let’s go in” Devon added
“I will go say hello to the gamma. I will join you in a bit” Kent said then walked to the other side and Devon along with Basil went into the grand hall.
Everyone’s jaw dropped on seeing Basil next to Devon.
“Oh my goodness, that must be the son of alpha Devon”
“He finally revealed his face. He doesn’t look that intimidating like they said”
“He’s quite good-looking. He got his looks from his parents. Alpha Devon has quite a handsome son” Some of the werewolves around gossiped and whispered to themselves as Devon and Basil walked in majestically.
Alpha Devon wore a mean look as well Basil as they heard all the gossip and whispers going around in the hallway with the help of their great hearing abilities.
Devon glimpsed at Basil and he smiled inwardly.
“You’re my son, no doubt about that” Devon uttered.
“What do you mean father?” Basil asked a bit confused by Devon’s statement.
“Their compliments don’t fantasize you”
“That’s not my purpose for being here so their gossips mean nothing to me because I know exactly who I desperately want to cross path with,” Basil said with a serious and they got to the entrance of the main hall.
